Overview
The Hobbywing Platinum 260A HV SBEC V5 Brushless ESC represents the pinnacle of electronic speed controller technology for serious RC helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft enthusiasts in the UK. This high-voltage brushless ESC is engineered to deliver exceptional performance, reliability and heat management for 700-800 class electric helicopters with main rotor lengths between 690-880mm, as well as compatible fixed-wing aircraft. Whether you're a seasoned RC pilot looking to upgrade your existing setup or building a competition-grade aircraft from scratch, the Platinum 260A HV V5 offers the advanced features and robust construction you need to achieve consistent, predictable flight performance in all conditions.
Hobbywing has redesigned this ESC with groundbreaking engineering that sets it apart from previous generations and competing models. The innovative double-sided hollow heat dissipation structure, patent pending, combined with strategically placed side window designs, creates an advanced air duct system that allows cooling air to pass directly through the ESC and extract heat from the internal circuit board. This means you get superior thermal management compared to conventional ESCs, allowing your aircraft to maintain peak performance even during extended flying sessions. The switchable no/single/double fan installation design gives you complete flexibility to optimise between extreme weight savings or extreme heat dissipation, depending on your specific application and flying style.
At its core, the Platinum V5 combines a powerful 32-bit processor with an advanced RPM accuracy algorithm that maximises rotational speed precision and enhances overall performance consistency. This is complemented by adjustable constant speed sensitivity settings that allow every pilot to personalise the ESC's behaviour to match their flying preferences perfectly. The result is a professional-grade brushless RC ESC that delivers faster throttle response, improved flight stability, greater flexibility in the air, and longer battery life through enhanced driving efficiency.
Key Features
- Patent-Pending Double-Sided Hollow Heat Dissipation Structure — The revolutionary design features a double-sided hollow construction with side window vents that create an efficient air duct system, allowing cooling air to rapidly pass through the ESC and extract heat directly from the internal circuit board via the shortest path possible. This innovative approach significantly improves the overall heat dissipation capability compared to conventional designs, keeping your ESC cooler during demanding flights.
- Switchable Fan Installation Design — Choose between no fan, single fan, or double fan configurations to optimise your setup for either extreme weight reduction or extreme heat dissipation, giving you complete flexibility based on your specific flying requirements and preferences.

Technical Performance
The Platinum 260A HV V5 delivers outstanding technical specifications engineered for professional-grade RC aircraft performance. With a continuous current rating of 260A and peak burst capability of 400A, this brushless ESC handles the demanding power requirements of large-scale electric helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft with assured reliability. The ESC accepts input voltage from 6-14S LiPo battery configurations, making it compatible with a wide range of high-voltage battery setups commonly used in competitive RC flying. The integrated 12V programmable BEC provides continuous output of 10A with instantaneous peak capability of 30A, sufficient to power multiple servos, gyroscopes, and flight control electronics without requiring an external power module. Construction utilises premium 8AWG silicone-insulated input wires for the battery connection and three 10AWG silicone-insulated output wires to the motor, ensuring minimal voltage drop and maximum power transfer efficiency. The ESC measures 89 x 50 x 34mm and weighs 297g including all wiring, making it appropriately sized for large electric helicopters in the 700-800 class with main rotor lengths between 690-880mm. The advanced heat dissipation design with double-sided hollow construction and switchable fan mounting ensures the ESC remains cool during sustained high-current operations, while synchronous rectification technology optimises driving efficiency to extend flight times from each battery charge. The 32-bit processor and RPM accuracy algorithm provide precision speed control with adjustable sensitivity across 16 parameters, supporting four distinct flight modes including fixed-wing, helicopter external governor, helicopter express governor, and helicopter store governor configurations.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between the SBEC V5 and OPTO V5 versions of the Platinum 260A HV? — The SBEC version (model HW30203100) includes a built-in 12V programmable Battery Elimination Circuit that can output 5-12V adjustable voltage with 10A continuous and 30A instantaneous current, eliminating the need for a separate BEC unit. The OPTO version (model HW30203101) removes the BEC entirely, making it 10g lighter at 287g, and is designed for pilots who prefer to use external BEC systems or have other power distribution arrangements. Both versions offer identical current ratings, telemetry support, and performance characteristics.
- Is the Platinum 260A HV SBEC V5 suitable for beginners? — This ESC is designed for experienced RC pilots and serious enthusiasts rather than beginners. Its 16 adjustable parameters, multiple flight modes, and advanced telemetry support require technical knowledge to optimise properly. However, if you are purchasing a quality 700-800 class electric helicopter or aircraft kit, this ESC represents an excellent long-term investment that will grow with your skills as you learn to adjust sensitivity and performance settings.
- What battery voltage and capacity does this ESC require? — The Platinum 260A HV accepts 6S through 14S LiPo batteries, providing significant flexibility in power source selection. Battery capacity depends on your aircraft weight and desired flight duration, but typical setups for 700-800 class helicopters use 5000-8000mAh packs in 6S or higher configurations. Always verify your motor and ESC combination can handle your chosen battery voltage and that your charger supports high-cell-count batteries.
- How does the heat dissipation design improve ESC reliability? — The patent-pending double-sided hollow heat dissipation structure with side window vents creates internal air ducts that direct cooling airflow across the circuit board, extracting heat along the shortest path to the outside. This is far more effective than conventional designs where heat builds up internally. The switchable fan mounting allows you to add single or dual cooling fans if needed for extended flight sessions or high-ambient-temperature conditions, ensuring the ESC stays within safe operating temperature ranges.
- Can this ESC work with my Futaba transmitter and receiver? — Yes, the Platinum 260A HV V5 supports Futaba S.BUS2 telemetry protocol, allowing full integration with Futaba radio systems. You can even adjust ESC parameters directly from your Futaba transmitter using the VBar protocol support. The optional S.BUS2 Telemetry Adapter (part 30850500) may be required depending on your specific receiver model.
- What flight modes does this ESC support? — The ESC offers 16 adjustable parameters across four dedicated flight modes: fixed-wing mode for conventional aircraft, helicopter external governor mode for stabilisation-dependent setups, helicopter express governor mode for responsive governor control, and helicopter store governor mode for additional governor variations, giving you complete flexibility for different aircraft types and flying preferences.
- Can I programme this ESC without purchasing additional accessories? — The Platinum 260A HV V5 supports programming via a separate programming port found on the ESC itself, allowing you to make adjustments with appropriate programming cables. However, the Multifunction LCD Program Box (part 30502001) provides the most user-friendly interface with clear menus and real-time feedback, whilst the OTA Programmer (part 30850400) offers wireless Bluetooth programming and firmware updates via smartphone within a 0-5m range.
- What is the RPM accuracy algorithm and why does it matter? — Hobbywing's RPM accuracy algorithm in the 32-bit processor maximises the precision with which the ESC measures and controls motor rotational speed. This delivers noticeably more consistent performance compared to previous-generation controllers like the Platinum 200A, resulting in smoother throttle response, more stable flight characteristics, and better precision during demanding manoeuvres or governor-controlled hovering.
- Does this ESC include telemetry data recording? — Yes, when used with compatible telemetry systems such as Mikado VBar, Futaba S.BUS2, MSH Brain, or iKON protocols, the ESC records flight data that can be accessed via the optional OTA Programmer module on your smartphone, allowing you to review flight statistics, diagnose issues, and optimise your setup.
