Technical Performance
The RC10 Trail Truck Portal Kit delivers genuine trail-crawling performance through a carefully engineered combination of proven technologies and innovative features. The Stealth X transmission is the heart of this system, utilising its unique design to allow independent tuning of front and rear drive ratios—a capability that distinguishes this kit from conventional RC rock crawlers. With stock setup overdriving the front by 5.7%, an optional one-to-one ratio available separately, and a maximum 11.83% overdrive option, you can precisely match the drivetrain to your terrain and driving style. The Enduro drivetrain feeds power through 3-piece telescopic driveshafts with extruded aluminium centre sections and universal front drive axles, paired with hardened steel ring and pinion gears that handle the extreme torque loads inherent in trail crawling. The portal axles represent a significant engineering advancement, providing nearly an inch of additional ground clearance compared to straight axles—a seemingly modest gain that translates to dramatically improved obstacle clearance on real terrain. These axles feature all-metal gears throughout, precision ball bearings, and a larger inner input bearing pocket designed to withstand the tremendous forces generated by portal gear reduction. The six-screw portal boxes ensure maximum structural rigidity under heavy torque loads, preventing gear separation and catastrophic failure during intense crawling sessions. The chassis employs BTA (behind-the-axle) steering geometry that improves approach and departure angles whilst maintaining a clean aesthetic, combined with bolt-on aluminium steering plates that enable adjustment and future modification. The suspension system comprises threaded gold-anodised aluminium shock bodies filled with fluid for consistent damping, connected via heavy-duty 5mm diameter steel links and supported by a robust splined front axle with adjustable caster. The chassis itself is constructed from gold-coloured stamped steel frame rails with a machined steel top shaft and steel servo horn, providing the structural integrity required for sustained trail punishment. Adjustable shock tower mounts allow fine-tuning of ride geometry, whilst the CMS (chassis-mounted servo) layout reduces unsprung weight and improves steering responsiveness. The kit includes optimised ball cups throughout the suspension for enhanced articulation and reduced binding, critical for maintaining traction across uneven terrain. At 1:10 scale, the kit measures 462mm in length, 236mm in width, and features a 325mm wheelbase, providing a compact yet capable footprint suitable for most trail environments. The overall design emphasises adjustability and durability, giving experienced builders and crawlers the tools to optimise performance across diverse terrain and conditions whilst maintaining the reliability demanded by serious RC enthusiasts across the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What makes the Stealth X transmission so special compared to other RC trail truck gearboxes? — The Stealth X transmission features the unique ability to adjust the rear drive ratio independently of the front drive, something most conventional RC transmissions cannot do. With the stock 5.7% front overdrive, an optional one-to-one ratio available separately, and a maximum 11.83% overdrive option, you can dial in the exact balance of front and rear power delivery to suit different terrain conditions and your personal driving style. This level of tuning flexibility is a genuine engineering advantage that allows experienced crawlers to optimise traction and power delivery in ways simply not possible with standard fixed-ratio transmissions, making it one of the most sophisticated driveline systems available in a 1:10 scale trail truck kit.
- How much extra ground clearance do the portal axles actually provide? — The new portal axles on the RC10 Trail Truck Portal Kit deliver nearly an inch of additional centre axle clearance compared to Team Associated's standard straight axles. Whilst this might sound modest, in practical trail conditions it translates to noticeably improved obstacle clearance and the ability to traverse terrain features that would catch or high-centre a conventional axle arrangement. Combined with the adjustable caster angles and optimised ball cup articulation, this clearance increase makes a real difference in crawling capability and confidence on challenging rocky terrain.
- Is this kit suitable for beginners, or do I need advanced RC building experience? — The RC10 Trail Truck Portal Kit is a comprehensive kit requiring full assembly, so it is best suited to builders with intermediate to advanced RC experience. You will need to assemble the chassis, suspension, drivetrain and body, which demands careful attention to detail, understanding of suspension geometry, and familiarity with RC assembly techniques. However, the build process itself is educational and satisfying, allowing you to understand every aspect of your trail truck. If you are new to RC, consider gaining assembly experience with a simpler kit first, or seek assistance from experienced RC builders in your local community.
- What battery type and capacity do I need for this electric RC10 trail truck? — The kit itself does not specify a particular battery type or capacity, allowing flexibility based on your motor choice and desired runtime. LiPo (Lithium Polymer) batteries are the standard choice for modern electric RC crawlers, typically in 2S (7.4V), 3S (11.1V) or higher configurations depending on your selected motor's voltage rating. The dual battery boxes included on the RC10 provide flexibility in battery placement for weight distribution tuning. Consult the specifications of your chosen brushless motor and ESC to determine the correct battery voltage and capacity, and always use a quality LiPo charger with proper balancing circuitry.
- What is the difference between the RC10 Trail Truck Portal Kit and Team Associated's other Enduro offerings? — The RC10 Trail Truck Portal Kit distinguishes itself through its heritage-inspired styling based on the legendary 1984 Team Associated RC10, its revolutionary Stealth X adjustable transmission with independent front/rear drive ratio tuning, and its new high-clearance portal axles that provide nearly an inch of additional ground clearance. Whilst other Enduro kits may share some chassis geometry and suspension components, the RC10 combines these specific advanced features with the classic RC10 aesthetic and officially licensed General and Method wheels and tyres, creating a unique trail crawler that balances authentic heritage styling with modern technological capability.
- Can I upgrade or modify the RC10 Trail Truck after purchase? — Absolutely. The RC10 Trail Truck Portal Kit has been designed with extensive adjustability and future modification in mind. The bolt-on aluminium steering plates allow straightforward adjustments and upgrades, the dual battery boxes provide flexibility for different power sources, the adjustable shock towers enable suspension geometry changes, and the modular chassis design supports numerous aftermarket upgrades. The two-stage Stealth X transmission gearbox tuning options and availability of additional gear sets (such as the AS42373 12/23 tooth set providing 36% additional overdrive) demonstrate that Team Associated has built this kit as an evolving platform rather than a fixed endpoint.
- How does the BTA steering geometry improve trail performance? — Behind-the-axle (BTA) steering positioning moves the steering linkage behind the front axle, which dramatically improves approach angle—the ability to climb over obstacles without the front bumper catching. This geometry also provides significantly better clearance around the front axle area and delivers a cleaner aesthetic. Combined with the adjustable caster angles on the splined front axle, BTA steering gives you multiple tools for tuning steering feel, response and ground clearance to match your specific trail requirements and driving preference.
- What makes the portal axles structurally capable of handling extreme torque loads? — The RC10 Portal Axles feature several engineering advantages that enable them to withstand the tremendous torque generated by portal gear reduction. All gears throughout the axles are metal rather than plastic, providing superior strength and longevity. The axles incorporate a new larger pocket for a heavier-duty inner input bearing that distributes loads more effectively. Most importantly, the portal gear boxes are secured with six screws rather than the typical fewer fasteners, dramatically increasing structural rigidity and preventing gear separation under heavy load. This multi-screw design is fundamental to the axle's ability to handle the extreme forces inherent in trail crawling without failure.
- Are the wheels and tyres genuine licensed products? — Yes, the RC10 Trail Truck includes officially licensed components from two industry leaders. The 1.9-inch Method 701 Trail Series beadlock wheels in satin silver are genuine Method products featuring the distinctive Trail Series design. The 1.9 x 4.65 inch General Grabber X3 tyres are official General Tyres products moulded in high-performance soft-compound rubber. This combination of industry-leading wheel and tyre manufacturers ensures both authentic appearance and genuine trail performance that matches their full-size counterparts.
- What tools and workspace do I need to build the RC10 Trail Truck Portal Kit? — You will need a well-lit workspace with access to basic hand tools including hex keys (Allen wrenches), screwdrivers in multiple sizes, small adjustable wrenches, and potentially a small hobby knife or craft knife for carefully separating parts from sprues if required. A workbench or table provides an ideal building surface, and keeping parts organised in small containers prevents losing fasteners and components. Whilst no power tools are strictly required for basic assembly, a power drill can speed up screw installation once you gain experience. Reference the assembly instructions carefully throughout the build process, and do not hesitate to seek advice from experienced RC builders in your local community if you encounter any assembly challenges.
