Technical Performance

The Axial SCX10 III Base Camp delivers impressive performance through its carefully engineered combination of proven mechanical components and quality electronics. Powered by an Axial Slickrock 35T brushed motor driving a 14T pinion gear meshed with a 52T spur gear, the crawler produces responsive acceleration with a realistic power delivery suited to technical rock crawling rather than high-speed bashing. The Spektrum 40A waterproof brushed electronic speed controller ensures reliable operation in wet, dusty, and challenging trail environments whilst providing smooth throttle response. The transmission features a 32-pitch gear system throughout, with full ball bearings and all-metal gears ensuring durability through countless trail sessions. Compatible with both 2S and 3S LiPo batteries via IC3 connectors, the electrical system offers flexibility for different driving preferences — 2S setups provide realistic scale speeds perfect for technical crawling, whilst 3S configurations deliver more spirited performance for faster trail running. The aluminium coilover shocks with oil filling provide consistent damping performance whilst remaining fully adjustable for fine-tuning. At 3.43kg (7.57 lbs), the crawler's weight is well-distributed across its 312mm wheelbase, creating a balanced platform that excels on challenging terrain. Measuring 527mm in length, 235mm in width, and 248mm in height, the 1/10 scale proportions sit perfectly between hyper-realistic scale dimensions and practical functionality. The 64mm ground clearance at the differential ensures obstacles that would stop lesser crawlers are navigated with ease. All mechanical pivot points feature all-metal construction with full ball bearings, whilst the locked differential provides maximum traction for technical climbing scenarios.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Axial SCX10 III Base Camp suitable for complete RC beginners? — Absolutely. This ready-to-run crawler comes fully assembled and pre-programmed with all electronics installed and tested. There is no complex building or soldering required. Simply add a compatible 2S or 3S LiPo battery and charger, then you're ready to drive. The included Spektrum SLT3 radio system is intuitive and easy to learn, featuring adjustable throttle limits and steering rate which allow you to start with beginner-friendly settings before gradually increasing responsiveness as your skills develop. The simple brushed motor and ESC combination is extremely reliable and requires minimal maintenance compared to brushless systems.
  • What battery does the SCX10 III Base Camp require? — The crawler is compatible with both 2S and 3S LiPo batteries featuring either EC3 or IC3 connectors. A 2S LiPo (7.4V nominal) provides realistic speed suitable for technical rock crawling and longer runtime, making it ideal for beginners or those who prefer finesse over speed. A 3S LiPo (11.1V nominal) delivers noticeably more spirited performance, higher top speed, and quicker acceleration, better suited to experienced drivers or those wanting more aggressive trail running. Battery capacity around 5000mAh provides good balance between reasonable weight and extended runtime. Batteries and chargers are sold separately to give you flexibility in choosing capacity and specifications to match your needs.
  • What is the ground clearance and can this crawler really handle rocks? — The Axial SCX10 III Base Camp features 2.5 inches (64mm) of ground clearance at the differential, which is excellent for a 1/10 scale crawler. The high-clearance AR45 portal axles make a significant difference when tackling real rocks and significant obstacles. The crawler is genuinely capable of climbing and conquering serious rock features. Combined with the optimised suspension geometry, tunable shocks, and tough drivetrain, the Base Camp handles rocks, ledges, and technical obstacles with impressive capability. Many experienced crawling fans are surprised by just how capable this affordable platform truly is when set up properly.
  • Can I upgrade the Axial SCX10 III Base Camp with optional parts? — Yes, the Base Camp is built on the proven Axial SCX10 III platform which has an extensive selection of optional and replacement parts available from Axial and numerous aftermarket suppliers. The included LCXU transmission can be upgraded for dig functionality, and standard axles can replace the portal axles if you prefer. You can customise everything from shock springs and damping fluids to suspension geometry components, different motor options, upgraded servos, winches, and much more. Whether you keep it mild or go wild with modifications, numerous upgrade options exist to take your crawler to the next level when you're ready.
  • How does the brushed motor compare to brushless alternatives? — The Axial Slickrock 35T brushed motor is simple, reliable, and requires minimal maintenance compared to brushless systems. Brushed motors are excellent for beginners as there are fewer potential failure points and they're more forgiving of battery over-discharge. The 35T rating provides adequate power for rock crawling whilst maintaining good efficiency and runtime. If you later want more performance, brushless upgrade motors are available, but for learning and enjoying sport-level rock crawling, the brushed system is an excellent foundation that will provide years of reliable service.
  • What is the difference between the SCX10 III Base Camp and other Axial crawlers? — The Base Camp represents Axial's value-for-money offering in the SCX10 III range. Compared to more expensive Axial models, the Base Camp provides the core SCX10 III platform capability at a significantly lower price point, making it the ideal entry point for the line. It features the same proven steel C-channel chassis, portal axles, and four-link suspension geometry as more expensive variants, but with a simpler, more affordable motor and ESC package. Other SCX10 III models might feature brushless motors, additional scale details, or licensed vehicle bodies like Jeep or Toyota, but for pure crawling performance and value, the Base Camp is hard to beat.
  • Is the SCX10 III Base Camp waterproof for wet conditions? — The Spektrum 40A ESC is rated as waterproof, and the receiver is housed in a sealed receiver box that protects it from water and dust ingress, providing good protection for wet trail conditions. However, the servo and motor are not fully waterproof — whilst the Spektrum S664 servo is rated as waterproof, it's good practice to allow the crawler to dry after wet sessions and to avoid submerging the model in water. Light rain, wet grass, and muddy conditions are absolutely fine, but you should avoid driving through deep water crossings or prolonged submersion.
  • What radio frequency and channels does the SLT3 transmitter provide? — The included Spektrum SLT3 transmitter operates on 2.4GHz frequency using DSMR technology, providing reliable, interference-free control. It offers 3 channels which control steering, throttle, and braking/reverse. The 3-channel design keeps things simple for beginners whilst remaining fully capable. The 5-channel SR515 receiver can communicate with higher-channel transmitters like the Spektrum DX6C, DX6 Rugged, DX5 Pro, or iXSR, meaning you can upgrade your transmitter later if you want additional functions like winch control, light control, or dig functionality without replacing the receiver.
