Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Avian 100Amp ESC suitable for beginners learning to fly electric RC aircraft? — While the Avian is not specifically designed as a beginner product—it is a sophisticated piece of equipment aimed at serious RC pilots—its plug-and-play setup, comprehensive protection systems, and real-time telemetry actually make it easier and safer to operate than many basic ESCs. Beginners will benefit from the automatic low-voltage cutoff protecting expensive batteries, the failsafe protection preventing loss of control, and the telemetry feedback showing exactly what's happening during flight. However, beginning pilots should ensure they have a Spektrum Smart transmitter and receiver to access all features, and should read the detailed instruction manual thoroughly before first use.
- What battery voltage and capacity does the Avian 100Amp require? — The Avian accepts any 3S to 6S LiPo battery, meaning battery packs ranging from 11.1 volts (3S) through 22.2 volts (6S). The maximum input voltage is 22.2V. Battery capacity is not restricted by the ESC—you can use any capacity battery with the correct voltage, though larger capacity batteries deliver longer flight times and larger batteries with higher discharge ratings (C-ratings) allow the 100A capability to be fully utilised. For optimal telemetry integration, use Spektrum Smart LiPo batteries with IC5 connectors that communicate battery data back to your transmitter.
- What is the difference between the Avian ESC and conventional brushless ESCs? — The Avian's Smart technology integration represents a fundamental shift from traditional ESCs. Conventional brushless ESCs only control motor power and offer limited programming options, often requiring multiple external sensors for telemetry data. The Avian integrates telemetry directly into the ESC itself through a single-wire connection to your transmitter, eliminating separate sensor modules. The advanced 32-bit M4 processor provides higher resolution control, more accurate motor output and smoother throttle response. The Avian can communicate with Spektrum Smart batteries, receivers and transmitters, creating a fully integrated system where all components share data intelligently. Traditional ESCs treat each component independently; the Avian treats your entire aircraft's electronics as a connected system.
- Can I use the Avian with non-Spektrum receivers and transmitters? — The Avian will operate with any standard RC receiver and transmitter as a conventional brushless ESC, providing basic power control with all safety features like low-voltage cutoff, over-current protection and thermal protection. However, you will not have access to real-time telemetry data, on-screen programming features, battery telemetry integration or thrust reversing—these features require compatible Spektrum Smart equipment. The ESC will work, but you won't experience the full capabilities that make the Avian special.
- How do I programme the Avian 100Amp ESC? — Three programming methods are available. The simplest method uses throttle stick programming with nothing more than your transmitter and receiver—no extra equipment required. For more detailed parameter adjustments at the flying field, the optional Smart ESC Programming Box connects directly to the ESC. For comprehensive programming on your computer, the SmartLink USB Updating and Programmer application provides full control over every setting. Most powerfully, if you have a Spektrum Smart transmitter and receiver, you can access the Avian Prog telemetry screen on your transmitter and adjust parameters directly from the flight line, making quick setting changes and experimenting without extra modules or boxes.
- What protection systems does the Avian provide? — The Avian features four layers of intelligent protection. Over-current protection monitors current draw and shuts down the motor if current exceeds safe limits, protecting both ESC and motor from damage during high-load situations. Automatic LiPo low-voltage cutoff prevents over-discharge of battery cells, extending battery lifespan and maintaining battery health for longer overall battery life. Thermal protection monitors ESC temperature and reduces power if the ESC becomes too hot, preventing damage from extended high-current operations. Failsafe protection will cut throttle to safe levels if radio signal is lost, preventing runaway aircraft. Together these systems ensure your aircraft is protected under virtually all operating conditions.
- Does the Avian work with EC3 and EC5 battery connectors? — Yes, the Avian features IC series battery connectors that are backwards compatible with EC3 and EC5 connectors. You can connect batteries with older EC-style connectors and the ESC will operate normally, though you will not receive battery telemetry data—only the ESC telemetry will be available. For full functionality including battery voltage, cell balance and charge cycle data, use Spektrum Smart LiPo batteries with IC3 or IC5 connectors, or use an adapter (sold separately) to connect IC-equipped batteries to older EC-equipped aircraft.
- What is the thrust reversing feature and how is it useful? — Thrust reversing allows you to reverse motor direction using a switch on your transmitter, enabling the propeller to push in reverse. This feature is useful for aircraft operations where you want to reduce landing distance or improve ground mobility, acting as a brake or giving you directional control on the ground. Thrust reversing requires a Smart compatible Spektrum transmitter and receiver, and must be activated in the ESC parameters before operation.
