This is not a beginner's setup; this is a purpose-built platform for 1/8th Off-Road, Truggy and recreational racing applications where reliability, power delivery and tunability are non-negotiable. Whether you're stepping up from a basic brushless RC car UK to competitive racing, or you're already established in the 1/8th scene, this combo represents the cutting edge of Hobbywing's engineering and offers the kind of advanced features typically reserved for podium-winning rigs.
The XR8 Plus G2S ESC is built on a foundation of full-sensored operation, meaning when paired with this matching 4274 G3 motor, it operates in pure sensored mode at all times, delivering exceptional throttle response and motor control that simply cannot be matched by sensorless systems. The 4274 G3 motor features a 2250KV rating optimised for 2-6S LiPo batteries, and when paired with the XR8 Plus G2S, unlocks Hobbywing's exclusive Turbo Timing technology — a system proven in top-tier 1/10th on-road competition that can boost your maximum speed by up to 50% compared to the previous generation. This combo is engineered for drivers who want to extract every ounce of performance from their chassis.
Built to withstand the rigours of both recreational running and serious off-road competition, every component in this package has been refined through real-world testing. The frameless fan design uses patented thermal management technology, whilst the motor features CNC-machined aluminium construction and advanced Hall sensor technology. This is the kind of investment that rewards you with years of reliable service and consistent performance at the track.
Key Features
- Full-Sensored Mode Operation — When this XR8 Plus G2S ESC is paired with the matching 4274 G3 motor, it automatically operates in pure sensored mode at all times. This delivers significantly smoother throttle response, better motor control across the entire RPM range, and more predictable handling characteristics compared to sensorless alternatives. Sensored operation is essential for competitive 1/8th racing where precision and consistency matter.
- Boost & Turbo Timing Technology (48°) — This ESC supports advanced Turbo Timing technology that was originally developed and proven in 1/10th on-road competition. When paired with Hobbywing 4268/4274 G3 motors, you can achieve up to 50% increase in maximum speed compared to previous generation motors. The system supports a full 48-degree boost range, allowing you to fine-tune the exact timing characteristics to match your driving style and track conditions. This feature alone can be the difference between victory and second place at the line.
- Patented Efficient Heat Dissipation System — The XR8 Plus G2S features a frameless fan design (Patent PCT/CN2021/115679) that uses high-airflow side-mounted cooling combined with a copper thermal conduction sink on the internal power plate. This integrated heat management system ensures the ESC maintains optimal operating temperature even during sustained high-power runs, preventing thermal throttling and protecting your investment from overheating-related failures.
- Durable Frameless Fan Blades — Unlike traditional plastic fans, the frameless design uses a special high-durability material that is extremely hard and resistant to damage. This dramatically reduces the failure rate caused by impacts from small stones, sand and other foreign objects common in off-road racing. If you're running 1/8th off-road, this durability matters because track debris is always a threat to exposed cooling systems.
- 200A Continuous / 1080A Peak Current Rating — The XR8 Plus G2S is rated for an impressive 200A continuous current with peak bursts up to 1080A. This massive power handling capability means the ESC can drive the 4274 G3 motor without limitation, delivering the full potential of the motor across a 2-6S LiPo battery range. You'll never be throttled by the electronics — only by the laws of physics and your driving skill.
- Internal Battery-Reverse Polarity Protection — A built-in reverse voltage protection circuit safeguards all internal components if you accidentally connect your battery with reversed polarity. This simple but critical feature prevents catastrophic damage that would otherwise destroy the ESC in seconds, giving you peace of mind during fast-paced pit sessions.
- Six RPM Speed Limit Options — The ESC supports up to 6 programmable RPM speed limit settings, allowing you to comply with different competition regulations worldwide or to set training modes for less experienced drivers. This flexibility is invaluable in competitive racing where different events and classes have different speed restrictions.
- Wireless Programming with OTA Module — Using Hobbywing's OTA (Over-The-Air) Bluetooth programmer and the HW Link smartphone app, you can program parameters, upgrade firmware and read data wirelessly from up to 5 metres away. No more fumbling with physical programming boxes in the pit area — everything is controlled from your phone with real-time feedback.
- Real-Time Data Recording — Connect the OTA module and HW Link app to monitor throttle position, voltage, current draw, temperature and RPM in real-time. You can also record historical data as graphs, allowing you to analyse your performance and optimise settings based on actual telemetry. This level of insight is essential for competitive tuning.
- Nearly 30 Programmable Parameters — The ESC contains an extensive menu of adjustable settings including Throttle PWM Frequency, Brake Frequency, Softening Value and Range, and Boost/Turbo Timing control. These parameters are optimised for top-level competition applications, giving you the precision needed to dial in your vehicle's behaviour for any track surface or driving style. All parameters can be programmed via the SET button on the ESC, the LCD Program Box Pro, or wirelessly via OTA.
- Capacitor Thermal Protection Circuit — Implemented protection prevents capacitors from overheating and exploding under extreme load conditions, which would otherwise cause irreversible damage to the ESC. This is particularly important during sustained high-power running or in hot ambient conditions.
- Super Internal BEC with Adjustable Voltage — The built-in switch-mode BEC (Battery Elimination Circuit) delivers up to 15A continuous current with adjustable output voltage from 6V to 8.4V in 0.1V increments. This means you can run standard servos, high-voltage servos, and other electronics with complete flexibility, eliminating the need for a separate battery pack for receivers and servos. The 15A rating ensures even demanding servo rigs won't starve the BEC.
- IP5X Dustproof Rating — The ESC meets IP5X dust protection standards, making it fully capable of handling the harsh 1/8th off-road environment where sand, dirt and debris are constant hazards. This rating means dust and small particles cannot enter the housing in quantities that would affect operation.
- Premium Ultra-Soft 11AWG Silicone Wire — The ESC comes with custom 11AWG silicone wires (two input wires at 200mm and three output wires at 200mm) that are ultra-flexible and have low resistance. The soft silicone insulation makes installation in tight spaces easier, whilst the large 11AWG gauge minimises voltage drop at high current levels.
- Customised Solder Tabs for Easy Soldering — The wire terminals feature Hobbywing's custom wider solder tabs with larger surface area, making it much easier and more reliable to solder wires to the ESC. Larger surface area means better heat transfer during soldering and stronger, more reliable connections that won't fail under vibration.
- 4274 G3 2250KV Motor Features — The paired motor is a modern 1/8th brushless design with advanced Hall sensor technology, adjustable mechanical timing (20-40°), and efficiency improvements of 6% or more compared to the previous G2 generation. The motor features a single-piece CNC-machined 7075 aluminium can with zero-gap construction, silicone dustproof ring seals around the sensor base, and gold-plated U-shaped copper contacts that minimise internal resistance and simplify wire soldering.
- Improved Motor Efficiency and Lower Operating Temperature — The 4274 G3 has been optimised for 6% better efficiency than the G2 series, which directly reduces thermal runaway and allows longer running times before temperature-related performance degradation. The lighter weight design (354g) also helps with chassis balance and acceleration.
- Fail-Safe Error-Free Hall Sensor Technology — The motor uses Hobbywing's patented Hall sensor technology with independent high-speed, high-precision encoders that output pure, accurate rotor position signals. This advanced sensor system isolates external interference and allows the motor to function at peak performance in a stable sensored state, ensuring reliability even in electrically noisy racing environments.
- Adjustable Mechanical Timing (20-40°) — The 4274 G3's mechanical timing is adjustable in both clockwise and counter-clockwise directions, allowing you to calibrate power output precisely and meet the requirements of various applications and track conditions. This tuning capability is crucial for extracting maximum performance on different surfaces.
- Multiple Mounting Options — The 4274 G3 motor features two pairs of M3 and two pairs of M4 screw holes on the front case bell, ensuring compatibility with various motor mounting plates and allowing flexibility in chassis design.
- 2-6S LiPo Compatibility — This combo supports 2S through 6S LiPo batteries, giving you tremendous flexibility. At 4S (14.8V), you get good power for most applications; at 6S (22.2V), you unlock the full potential of the motor and the most aggressive Turbo Timing settings. The wide voltage range means you can experiment to find the exact performance level and runtime characteristics that suit your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between the XR8 Plus G2S and previous generation XR8 ESCs? — The Plus G2S is the latest evolution, featuring the patented frameless fan cooling system with integrated copper thermal conduction for superior heat management, refined full-sensored circuitry for improved throttle response, support for Turbo Timing technology allowing up to 50% speed increases when paired with 4268/4274 G3 motors, nearly 30 programmable parameters optimised for competition use, wireless OTA programming and real-time telemetry capability, and overall refinements in power delivery and durability. If you're upgrading from an older model, the cooling system alone is a meaningful improvement.
- Can I use this with a non-Hobbywing motor? — The XR8 Plus G2S will work with any brushless motor with Hall sensors (sensored mode) or without (sensorless mode). However, you will only unlock the full-sensored mode and the exclusive Turbo Timing feature when paired with a matching Hobbywing motor like this 4274 G3. The Turbo Timing system is specifically calibrated to work with Hobbywing's motor designs, and you'll lose the 50% speed boost advantage with other brands.
- What battery voltage should I use with this combo? — The combo supports 2-6S LiPo batteries. For most 1/8th off-road and truggy applications, 4S (14.8V) provides a good balance of power and runtime. If you want maximum performance and are willing to sacrifice some runtime, 6S (22.2V) will unlock the most aggressive settings and highest speed, though you'll generate more heat and place higher stress on mechanical components. Start with 4S and move to 6S once you're comfortable with the setup.
- How long does the battery last on a single charge? — Runtime depends on your battery capacity (measured in mAh), driving style, terrain, and power settings. A typical 5000mAh 4S LiPo will provide 15-30 minutes of running time depending on conditions. Higher capacity batteries offer longer runtime but add weight. Most racers use 5000-8000mAh batteries for practice and 3000-5000mAh for racing.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — No, this is not a beginner's combo. The XR8 Plus G2S ESC has nearly 30 programmable parameters, and incorrect settings can damage the ESC and motor. The Turbo Timing system requires careful calibration. The full-sensored operation, whilst offering superior performance, requires proper motor assembly and hall sensor alignment. This combo is designed for experienced drivers who understand brushless systems, can solder connectors reliably, and are comfortable with advanced tuning. If you're new to RC, start with a simpler system.
- Can I use standard 11AWG connectors with this ESC? — The XR8 Plus G2S comes with custom silicone-insulated 11AWG wires with soldered connections. It does not use XT connectors or other standard bullet connectors. You will need to solder your battery and motor leads directly to the provided wires or use adapters. The advantage is lower resistance and better contact reliability under high current, but it requires soldering skill.
- What programming options are available? — You can programme the ESC via the SET button on the ESC itself (using the LED indicators), through the Hobbywing LCD Program Box Pro (sold separately), or wirelessly through the OTA Bluetooth module and HW Link smartphone app (sold separately). The OTA method is most convenient for pit adjustments during racing.
- Can I monitor my ESC temperature and motor RPM in real-time? — Yes, with the OTA Bluetooth module and HW Link app installed on your smartphone, you can view real-time data including throttle position, battery voltage, current draw, ESC temperature, motor RPM and more. You can also record this data as graphs for post-run analysis to help optimise your settings. The wireless range is approximately 5 metres in open field conditions.
- Is the motor waterproof for wet conditions? — The 4274 G3 motor has an IP5X dustproof rating (meaning it resists dust ingress), but it is not fully waterproof. Whilst it can handle damp conditions, submerging it or exposing it to heavy spray will eventually lead to water ingress and failure. If you're racing in wet conditions, take precautions to minimise water exposure and dry the motor thoroughly afterwards.
- What is the advantage of the 4274 G3 motor over the 4268 G3? — The 4274 is a slightly larger diameter motor (42mm versus 36mm can diameter) with a longer stator stack (74mm), making it capable of higher torque output at low RPM whilst maintaining good efficiency. The 2250KV rating is ideal for 1/8th off-road and truggy racing. The 4268 comes in higher KV ratings (1900/2200/2800KV) and is used for different applications. For this combo and your application, the 4274 is the correct choice.
- How do I adjust the mechanical timing on the motor? — The 4274 G3 features adjustable mechanical timing between 20-40°, adjusted by rotating the rotor bell relative to the stator. You'll need to remove the motor from your vehicle, loosen the end bell, and rotate it in small increments (typically in 2° steps). Start at 30° for general use and adjust based on temperature, acceleration feel and track conditions. This adjustment significantly affects power delivery and efficiency, so it should be done carefully and tested thoroughly.
- What makes the Hall sensor system in the 4274 G3 special? — The motor uses Hobbywing's patented error-free Hall sensor technology with independent high-speed, high-precision encoders. Unlike basic Hall sensors that can be affected by electromagnetic interference, this system isolates external noise and always outputs an accurate rotor position signal. This allows the motor to maintain stable, peak performance even in electrically noisy racing environments, and prevents the sensor errors that can cause jerky throttle response or stalling.
- Can I upgrade the firmware on the ESC? — Yes, firmware upgrades are supported. You can update the ESC through the Hobbywing LCD Program Box Pro or the OTA Bluetooth module with the HW Link app. Hobbywing periodically releases firmware updates that improve performance, add features, or fix issues. Always backup your current settings before upgrading and ensure your battery is fully charged during the process.
- What happens if I connect the battery with reversed polarity? — The XR8 Plus G2S has a built-in reverse polarity protection circuit that prevents damage if you accidentally connect your battery backwards. The ESC will simply not power on. Once you correct the battery polarity, the ESC will work normally with no damage to internal components. This is an important safety feature that saves expensive mistakes during fast-paced pit sessions.
- Is the XR8 Plus G2S suitable for 1/8th on-road racing? — Yes, the XR8 Plus G2S is designed for 1/8th on-road, off-road, and truggy racing applications. In fact, the Turbo Timing technology was originally proven in 1/10th on-road competition and has been adapted for this 1/8th platform. The 2250KV motor rating makes it ideal for off-road and truggy use, but you can also use it for on-road applications if your chassis design accommodates a 42mm motor.
