Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between pure sensored mode and sensorless mode operation? — Pure sensored mode uses continuous feedback from the motor's Hall sensors to perfectly time power delivery at every RPM, providing exceptional smoothness and responsiveness throughout the entire power range. The XR8 Pro G3 and 4268 G3 combo is specifically engineered to operate in pure sensored mode at all times when used together, whereas the motor can only achieve occasional sensored operation when paired with other ESC brands. Sensored mode delivers better low-speed torque, more linear throttle response and improved overall control precision.
- How much faster is the G3 generation compared to the previous G2 generation? — Hobbywing claims up to a 50% increase in maximum speed when using the G3 motor paired with the G3 ESC thanks to the Turbo Timing technology. This represents a significant performance upgrade that comes from improved motor efficiency (6% more efficient than G2), optimised rotor design, and advanced timing control capabilities only available when motor and ESC work together as an integrated system.
- What does Turbo Timing do and is it available with other ESCs? — Turbo Timing is an advanced timing control technology inherited from 1/10th scale on-road racing that allows the motor to reach maximum power output instantly. The technology is only fully available when the 4268 G3 motor is paired with Hobbywing's XR8 series ESCs. When G3 motors are used with the older XR8 Pro G2 ESC, the turbo timing feature can be set to a maximum of 48 degrees. The Turbo Timing system adjusts motor timing automatically throughout the RPM range for optimal power delivery at all speeds.
- What battery do I need for the HOBBYWING XR8 Pro G3 and 4268 G3 combo? — The XR8 Pro G3 ESC accepts 2-4S LiPo battery input, whilst the 4268 G3 motor is rated for 2-6S operation. For optimal performance with this combo, you should use a 3S or 4S LiPo battery configuration. The higher voltage (4S) will provide more power and top speed, whilst 3S offers slightly more manageable power delivery and longer runtime. Always use a quality LiPo battery pack rated for high-discharge current, ideally with a continuous discharge rating of at least 100C for this 200A ESC.
- Is the XR8 Pro G3 waterproof? — The XR8 Pro G3 ESC is not fully waterproof but features IP5X dustproof rating, providing excellent protection against dust and debris in off-road environments. The motor is also IP5X rated. Neither component is suitable for submersion in water or water fording applications. If you require waterproof electronics, you would need to consider alternative ESC and motor options specifically designed with waterproof sealing.

Timing can be adjusted in both directions (clockwise and counter-clockwise), allowing you to optimise power output for different applications. Higher timing angles increase power output but may reduce efficiency and generate more heat, whilst lower timing angles improve efficiency and smoothness but reduce maximum power.
- Is this combo suitable for beginners? — This is a professional-grade competition system designed for experienced racers and serious enthusiasts rather than beginners. The advanced features like sensored operation, dual brake modes and mechanical timing adjustment require familiarity with brushless systems and ESC tuning. Beginners would be better served by more entry-level ready-to-run systems, though this combo would be excellent for someone progressing from brushed to brushless racing.
- How does the disc brake mode work? — The closed-loop torque brake control (disc brake mode) monitors the motor's actual output and adjusts braking force to provide linear deceleration similar to real car disc brakes. This completely eliminates the non-linear braking problems common with traditional PWM braking, where vehicle speed dramatically affects braking force. You can adjust both the overall braking curve and the distribution of braking force between front and rear wheels to match your chassis setup.
- What makes the XR8 Pro G3 cooler than the G2? — Multiple engineering improvements combine to reduce operating temperature by approximately 15°C under heavy load. These include excellent hardware design, innovative smart freewheeling technology for improved drive efficiency, the efficient frameless fan design, and intelligent fan control that only runs the fan when needed. These features work together to keep the ESC in optimal operating temperature ranges during extended racing sessions.
- Does this combo include a battery and charger? — No, the combo includes only the ESC, motor, wiring and sensor cables. You will need to provide your own 2-4S LiPo battery pack, battery charger, RC receiver, transmitter and servo equipment. The motor is un-soldered with exposed wires for easy integration into your specific vehicle setup.
