Technical Performance

This combo delivers professional-grade performance metrics across the board. The EZRUN MINI28 ESC's 30A continuous current rating with 80A peak capacity ensures punchy acceleration and sustained power delivery, whilst the all-metal shell radiator maintains thermal stability during competitive racing where heat generation can be significant. The 5000KV 1626SD motor is engineered as a true high-performance unit rather than a generic application, featuring precision-wound stator coils with ultra-thin silicon steel laminations that minimise core losses and maximise efficiency. The sensored design employs high-precision sensors that enable the ESC to provide zero-cogging torque delivery and exceptional low-speed response, critical factors in 1/28 racing where track conditions and racing lines demand absolute precision. The motor's 2-pole configuration optimises the torque curve for 1/28 scale, delivering the responsive characteristics demanded by racing drivers rather than top-end speed at the expense of mid-range punch. With a high-density 4-layer PCB providing excellent solder joints and current distribution, the motor withstands the electrical stresses of competitive racing. The output shaft diameter of 2mm is specifically sized for 1/28 pinion and spur gears, ensuring proper mesh and longevity. At just 5g for the ESC and 18g for the motor, the combo keeps your mini RC car light and responsive, improving cornering stability and acceleration. This is a genuine 2S LiPo system, meaning you will use standard 2S LiPo batteries (7.4V nominal) commonly available throughout the UK's RC hobby market, with BEC voltage selectable at 6V or 7.4V to match your servo requirements. The engineering rigour throughout this combo — from the high-hardness aluminium CNC casing to the explosion-proof rotor and high-resistant output shaft — reflects Hobbywing's commitment to delivering electronics that perform reliably at the edge of performance, lap after lap, race after race.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What batteries does the Hobbywing EZRUN MINI28 1626SD combo need? — This system is designed for 2S LiPo batteries (7.4V nominal). You will need a 2S LiPo battery pack with appropriate capacity for your chassis and driving style, connected via the power connectors provided. Ensure your charger is compatible with LiPo battery chemistry and charges at the correct cell count. The integrated BEC can deliver up to 3.5A of power to your servo and steering electronics, though ensure your selected servo is rated for 2S operation.
  • Is this combo suitable for beginners to 1/28 racing? — Whilst this is a professional-grade combo tailored for competition use, it is certainly accessible to hobbyists discovering 1/28 racing. The main consideration for beginners is the 26 tunable parameters — these offer tremendous flexibility but require some learning to optimise effectively. Start with the preset competition modes (Zero Timing and Modified) for immediate usable performance, then gradually explore parameter adjustments as you gain experience. The compact size and sensored motor provide excellent drivability even at beginner skill levels, offering immediate feedback and responsive acceleration to help you learn throttle control on the mini racing scale.
  • Can I programme this ESC with my smartphone? — Yes, by purchasing an optional OTA Bluetooth module and using Hobbywing's mobile application, you can wirelessly configure ESC parameters, read performance data and perform firmware updates from your smartphone. This makes trackside adjustments convenient without needing to carry a laptop or programming box to the racing venue.
  • What makes this better than a general 1/10 ESC and motor downsized for 1/28? — This combo has been purpose-engineered for 1/28 competition rather than adapted from larger scales. The ESC case dimensions, weight and layout optimise installation in tiny chassis spaces. The motor's 1626 size, pole count and KV rating are specifically calibrated for 1/28 dynamics — not simply a scaled-down 1/10 design. The firmware, tuning parameters and operating characteristics are all optimised for this specific scale, delivering responsiveness and performance that generic cross-scale solutions cannot match. Competitive 1/28 drivers choose this combo precisely because it was designed from the ground up for their racing platform.
  • Do I need external programming equipment for this ESC? — The system works with Hobbywing's LCD G2 setting box (sold separately), or the optional OTA Bluetooth module for wireless programming via smartphone. Neither is strictly required — the two built-in competition modes (Zero Timing and Modified) are immediately usable right out of the box. However, accessing the full 26 tunable parameters requires one of these programming options if you wish to fine-tune performance beyond the preset modes.
  • Is this ESC waterproof? — No, the EZRUN MINI28 ESC is not waterproof. This is a specification worth noting if you race in wet conditions. However, many 1/28 competitive racing facilities operate indoors on carpet or sealed surfaces where moisture exposure is minimal. If outdoor racing in damp conditions is part of your plans, you will need to take appropriate precautions to protect the electronics from water ingress.
  • What servo compatibility should I consider? — The ESC's BEC outputs 6V or 7.4V at up to 3.5A maximum current. Select a servo rated for your chosen BEC voltage and ensure the servo does not exceed 3.5A continuous current draw. The compact BEC can support high-voltage, high-torque servos often preferred in competitive racing for improved steering response and lock-to-lock speed.
  • How do I mount the motor in my chassis? — The 1626 motor is designed to mount in a cradle or similar support structure. Importantly, there are no motor mount screw holes drilled into the motor itself — it relies on a dedicated motor cradle or mounting block that holds it securely to the chassis frame. Check your 1/28 chassis documentation or supplier to ensure you have or can obtain the appropriate motor mount cradle for this size motor.
  • What is the difference between the 5000KV and 3500KV versions of this combo? — Hobbywing offers alternative versions with 3500KV motors for users prioritising mid-range torque and lower heat generation over absolute top-end speed. The 5000KV version in this combo emphasises higher speed capability with excellent timing advance features to unlock even greater performance. Choose 5000KV for maximum speed-focused racing, or 3500KV if you prefer stronger torque characteristics and cooler motor operation. Both are genuine competition options used by different racing drivers based on their track preferences and driving style.
  • Can this power system be used in scales other than 1/28? — Hobbywing explicitly designs this combo for 1/28th and 1/27th scale racing. Whilst it might physically fit some adjacent scales, the ESC firmware, motor tuning and mounting interfaces are optimised for these specific scales. Using it in significantly different scales may result in suboptimal performance characteristics and potential compatibility issues with standard motor mounts and chassis specifications.
