Key Features
- Officially Licensed 1987 Toyota SR5 Xtra Cab Body — This is Axial's first officially licensed 1/10-scale Toyota, bringing authentic Toyota branding and styling to your collection. The Xtra Cab body features scale-moulded grille, headlights, taillights, hood latches, and an external roll cage, capturing the distinctive character of the original 1987 SR5 with remarkable accuracy.
- Clipless Body Mounting System — The innovative clipless design eliminates unsightly body clips that detract from scale appearance, while making chassis access incredibly simple. A quick push of the latching tab and the body lifts away in seconds, giving you clean aesthetics without sacrificing functionality.
- Trail-Gear AR45P Portal Axles — These licensed portal axles aren't just for show; they provide superior ground clearance at the differential for enhanced off-road manoeuvrability. The fabricated-style housings perfectly capture authentic Trail-Gear designs whilst delivering genuine performance benefits on technical terrain.
- Trail-Gear Rock Sliders with Boat-Side Design — These durable, officially licensed rock sliders do double duty, protecting your chassis and body whilst providing a smooth, angled bottom that allows the SR5 to glide over rocks and obstacles with ease. The boat-side design increases ground clearance and improves overall trail performance.
- Trail-Gear Creeper Lock Beadlock Wheels — Officially licensed beadlock wheels finish off the authentic scale appearance whilst providing functional bead-locking for secure tyre mounting during demanding trail runs. They perfectly complement the overall Trail-Gear aesthetic of the vehicle.
- Officially Licensed Interco Super Swamper Tyres — These recognisable, authentic tyres deliver the grip and ground clearance needed to conquer any trail. The Super Swamper design has proven itself in the real off-road world, and now brings that capability to your RC crawler.
- SCX10 III Steel C-Channel Chassis — Built on Axial's proven SCX10 III platform, the steel C-channel construction is strong and stiff, reducing frame flexing whilst increasing the precision of suspension movement. The two-piece chassis design even allows you to adjust wheelbase with ease for different terrain challenges.
- LCXU Transmission with Dig Function — This high-performance, single-speed transmission features a full set of ball bearings and all-metal internal gears for strength and durability needed on the toughest trails. The Dig function allows you to lock the rear wheels on command, delivering tighter turning radius and helping front tyres grip rocky ledges.
- Aluminium Adjustable Coilover Shocks — The oil-filled shocks feature aluminium threaded bodies and single coilover springs, making them tunable for achieving the best damping rate for your specific terrain. This represents the ultimate mix of scale authenticity and real performance engineering.
- Optimised Suspension Geometry — The 3-link front suspension reduces bump steer whilst the rear 4-link reduces torque twist, delivering precise handling characteristics across technical terrain. This engineering ensures your RC car performs as well as it looks.
- Molded Composite Exocage — This rugged, trail-worthy styling element adds authentic detail without excessive weight high on the chassis. The design increases overall manoeuvring capability on challenging trails.
- High-Clearance Bumpers — Front and rear bumpers deliver both visual impact and genuine performance, designed with scale in mind whilst providing the strength and clearance essential for reliable trail performance. They optimise approach and departure angles for technical terrain.
- Bobbed and Dovetailed Bed — The modified truck bed design enhances clearance and overall manoeuvring capability, keeping the SR5 scrambling over obstacles that would stop lesser crawlers.
- Battery Tray Integrated into Rock Slider — The all-new integrated battery tray accommodates everything from small competition-style batteries to large 5000mAh trail packs, held securely with elastomer strapping for quick access during your session.
- Heavy-Duty Wild Bore Driveshafts — These robust driveshafts provide the strength needed to confidently power over any terrain, capable of handling the abuse that serious trail running demands.
- Spektrum SLT3 3-Channel Transmitter — Included with the RTR package, this transmitter is designed to help all drivers succeed on the trails. Its throttle limiting feature can restrict maximum speed to 50% or 75% until you're ready for full power, making it particularly beginner-friendly. Four AA batteries are included for immediate use.
- Spektrum SR515 DSMR 5-Channel Waterproof Receiver — Housed in a sealed waterproof box, this receiver protects your electronics whilst allowing confident operation in wet conditions. The 5-channel capability provides more control options than basic systems.
- Spektrum SPMS683 Waterproof Servo — This 25T servo features metal gears for durability and comes fully waterproofed, ready for the wet and muddy conditions you'll encounter on the trails.
- Spektrum 40A Waterproof Brushed ESC — This reliable electronic speed controller is sealed against moisture, ensuring consistent power delivery even in challenging conditions. Its 40A rating provides ample power for the Axial 35T motor.
- Axial 35T Brushed Motor — This proven trail-performance motor delivers reliable power transfer with simple maintenance, making it ideal for extended trail sessions without constant servicing.
- Water-Resistant Construction Throughout — The combination of sealed receiver box, waterproof servo, and waterproof ESC means you can tackle muddy creeks and wet terrain with confidence in your electronics' protection.
Technical Performance
The Axial SCX10 III 1987 Toyota SR5 is engineered from the ground up as a serious trail-crawling machine. Built on the proven SCX10 III platform that has won countless competitions and conquered legendary trails worldwide, this 1/10-scale rock crawler features a steel C-channel chassis that provides the strength and precision needed for technical terrain. The brushed electric power system—comprising the Axial 35T 540 motor paired with a Spektrum 40A waterproof electronic speed controller—delivers reliable, maintenance-friendly performance that keeps you on the trails rather than tinkering in the workshop. The LCXU transmission with dig function provides incredible low-speed control and the ability to lock the rear wheels for maximum traction when needed, whilst the optimised 3-link front and 4-link rear suspension geometry minimises bump steer and torque twist for predictable handling. Aluminium adjustable coilover shocks allow you to fine-tune suspension damping for different terrain characteristics. The vehicle measures 475mm in length, 234mm in width and height, with a 312mm wheelbase and a total weight of 6.80 pounds (including battery). The platform is compatible with 2-3S LiPo batteries using IC3 connectors, with most users finding excellent performance from affordable 2S or 3S packs. The Trail-Gear AR45P portal axles provide superior ground clearance at the differential—a critical advantage when navigating rocky obstacles. Wrapped in licensed Interco Super Swamper tyres on authentic Creeper Lock beadlock wheels, the SR5 grips terrain that would overwhelm standard rubber. All electronics come waterproof-sealed, from the SR515 receiver housed in its waterproof box to the SPMS683 servo and 40A ESC, making this an excellent choice for muddy creek-crawling and wet trail conditions. Whether you're exploring easy backyard terrain or tackling technical rock gardens, the engineering and component quality built into this ready-to-run package delivers performance that rivals hand-built competition crawlers.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Axial SCX10 III 1987 Toyota SR5 suitable for beginners? — Yes, this is an excellent ready-to-run RC crawler for beginners entering the hobby. The Spektrum SLT3 transmitter includes throttle limiting features (50% or 75% speed restrictions) that let you control maximum speed until you gain confidence. The brushed motor system is straightforward to maintain compared to brushless alternatives, and the proven SCX10 III platform is inherently forgiving on mistakes. If you're new to RC crawling, this Toyota combines genuine trail capability with beginner-friendly features that won't overwhelm you.
- What battery does the Axial SCX10 III 1987 Toyota SR5 require? — This ready-to-run model requires a 2-3S LiPo battery with an IC3 connector. A 2S 7.4V LiPo is the minimum specification and delivers excellent trail performance with good runtime. Many users prefer 3S 11.1V LiPo batteries for slightly quicker acceleration, though both work brilliantly. The integrated battery tray accommodates anything from small competition-style batteries to large 5000mAh trail packs, giving you flexibility in choosing the right capacity for your running style.
- What is the difference between this Toyota SR5 and other SCX10 III models? — The SCX10 III 1987 Toyota SR5 is Axial's first officially licensed Toyota, featuring authentic factory-painted Xtra Cab bodywork with scale-moulded details including grille, headlights, taillights and hood latches. It includes Trail-Gear licensed components (AR45P portal axles, rock sliders, Creeper Lock wheels, and beadlock wheels) that you don't get on basic SCX10 III variants. The Toyota-specific touches, combined with the boat-side rock slider design and integrated battery tray, make this the most scale-authentic SCX10 III crawler Axial has created, particularly for Toyota enthusiasts. If you want Jeep or Chevy variants, those exist as separate models, but for Toyota lovers, this is the definitive 1/10-scale offering.
- How does the clipless body system work? — Simply push in the latching tab on the rear of the truck and lift, then pull back and your body lifts away in seconds. This innovative system eliminates unsightly body clips whilst delivering a clean scale appearance. Reinstalling is just as quick—align the body and it locks securely without any tools or fiddling with clips.
- Can this handle wet conditions? — Absolutely. The sealed receiver box, waterproof servo, and waterproof ESC mean all critical electronics are protected from moisture. You can confidently wade through creeks and tackle muddy trails without worrying about water damage to your electronics. The overall water-resistant construction makes this an excellent choice for UK trail conditions, which often involve wet and muddy terrain.
- What makes the portal axles important? — Portal axles provide superior ground clearance at the differential, a critical advantage when scrambling over rocky obstacles. The Axial-included Trail-Gear AR45P portal axles feature licensed fabricated-style housings that look authentic whilst delivering genuine performance benefits on technical terrain. This clearance means you'll clear obstacles that would catch the differential on standard axles.
- How long does the battery last per charge? — Runtime depends on your battery capacity and driving style. A typical 2-3S LiPo battery delivers 20-45 minutes of continuous trail running, though gentle crawling sessions can exceed this. The integrated battery tray accommodates larger capacity packs (up to 5000mAh) if you want extended session times without recharging.
- Is assembly required? — No, this is a ready-to-run (RTR) model that arrives fully assembled. Simply add a compatible 2-3S LiPo battery and charger, then you're ready for immediate trail action. The only assembly required is fitting four AA batteries into the transmitter.
