Key Features
- Xpilot 6-Axis Gyro Stabilisation System — The integrated gyroscope stabiliser constantly monitors and corrects the aircraft's attitude in flight, providing automatic stabilisation that helps even complete beginners maintain level, controlled flight. This sophisticated technology is particularly valuable when flying in windy conditions, as the gyro automatically compensates for wind gusts and turbulence that would otherwise cause an unstable aircraft to become uncontrollable. The stabilisation system is so effective that it transforms the flying experience for novice pilots, allowing them to focus on learning stick control rather than fighting constant trim adjustments.
- 3-Level Flight Control Assistance — The Xpilot system offers three distinct assistance levels that grow with your skills. Beginner level provides maximum stabilisation assistance across all flight axes, essentially making the aircraft almost impossible to crash through pilot input alone. Intermediate level reduces the assistance, requiring more pilot input whilst still providing safety margins. Expert mode removes all assistance, giving you complete manual control for advanced aerobatic flying. This progressive learning system ensures you can develop your skills safely and systematically rather than facing a steep, frustrating learning curve.
- One-Key Aerobatic Function — By simply pressing a dedicated button and moving the control stick, you can command the aircraft to perform automatic flips and rolls, instantly adding excitement to your flights. This feature means that even brand-new pilots can experience the thrill of aerobatic flying without requiring years of practice or advanced stick control skills. The automatic aerobatic sequences are reliable and repeatable, building your confidence and demonstrating what advanced flying looks like.
- Four-Channel Radio Control with Aileron — The full four-channel control system gives you control of throttle, elevator, rudder and aileron, providing the control authority needed for genuine sport flying and aerobatic manoeuvres. Unlike simpler trainer aircraft with only three channels, aileron control dramatically improves the aircraft's agility and roll rate, making it significantly more responsive and enjoyable to fly. The 2.4GHz frequency-hopping digital radio system operates on 4 channels with a control range of approximately 200 metres, giving you serious flying distances without the interference issues associated with older analogue systems.
- Durable EPP Foam Construction — The entire airframe is constructed from expanded polypropylene (EPP) composite material, a type of foam specifically engineered for RC aircraft applications. EPP is renowned for its exceptional toughness and flexibility—it absorbs impacts that would shatter traditional balsa or rigid composite aircraft, then returns to its original shape. This means crash recovery is straightforward: simply pick up your aircraft, check that nothing has come loose, and fly again. The durability of EPP construction makes the VOLANTEX Mustang an economical choice when you factor in crash repair costs that plague more fragile aircraft.
- Propeller Saver Protection — A propeller saver coupling connects the propeller to the motor shaft, designed to slip or absorb shock if the propeller strikes an obstacle during landing or during ground handling. This inexpensive but clever feature protects the motor's gearbox and shaft from damage that could otherwise require expensive repairs, making the propeller saver an important safety feature for beginner pilots still developing smooth landing techniques.
- Efficient 10mm Coreless Brush Motor — The small, lightweight 10mm coreless motor generates impressive thrust despite its compact size, delivering the power needed for responsive flight and aerobatic performance. Coreless motors operate more smoothly and efficiently than traditional iron-core designs, producing less vibration and drawing less current for equivalent thrust. The brushed design means the motor is simple, reliable and requires no electronic programming or configuration—you simply plug it in and fly.
- Truly Ready-to-Fly Package — Unlike PNP (plug-and-play) kits that require separate purchase of radio, batteries and charger, or basic KIT versions requiring assembly and soldering, this RTF package includes absolutely everything needed. The battery arrives pre-charged, the charger is included, the radio is bound and tested, and the aircraft is fully assembled. You can literally open the box and fly within minutes, with no special tools, technical knowledge or additional purchases required.
- Compact 317mm Length with 400mm Wingspan — The aircraft's small overall size makes it ideal for flying in confined spaces such as larger gardens, school playing fields, or community parks where larger aircraft would be impractical. The compact dimensions also mean easier transportation—the aircraft fits in most car boots or backpacks, so you can easily take your flying hobby with you wherever you go. Despite the small size, the 400mm wingspan provides sufficient lift and stability for genuine flying pleasure.
- Indoor and Outdoor Capability — The 60-gram flying weight and powerful motor combination means this aircraft can be flown successfully both indoors in larger halls and outdoor locations, providing versatility unavailable with heavier trainer aircraft. Outdoor flying offers more space and more stable wind conditions, whilst indoor flying capability means you can practise during bad weather or enjoy flying sessions regardless of outdoor conditions.
Technical Performance
The VOLANTEX P-51D MUSTANG V2 achieves its remarkable ease-of-use through a carefully engineered combination of aerodynamic design, lightweight construction and sophisticated flight control technology. The aircraft's lightweight EPP composite airframe weighs just 100 grams (0.1 lbs), a critical factor that ensures slow, forgiving flight speeds ideal for learning. The 10mm coreless brushed motor delivers adequate power to the propeller whilst remaining efficient and smooth-running, reducing vibration that might otherwise destabilise the airframe. The integrated speed controller combines electronic power management with the receiver circuitry, reducing complexity and weight compared to separate components. The servo system, fitted with small, precise units of approximately 2 grams each, provides responsive control input translation without adding excessive weight that would compromise flight characteristics. The recommended 3.7V 400mAh lithium polymer battery provides energy for approximately 15 minutes of flight time, a generous duration that allows extended flying sessions without constant battery swapping. The 2.4GHz digital radio operates on four channels using frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology, a military-grade system that provides absolute immunity from interference from other radio control users or wireless equipment. The aircraft's aerodynamic design, developed by VolantexRC's engineering team, ensures that the Xpilot gyro stabilisation system can effectively control the aircraft's attitude, whether correcting for wind gusts or assisting the pilot's control inputs. The combination of light weight, efficient power delivery and advanced stabilisation creates an aircraft that truly lives up to its reputation as one of the finest beginner trainer aircraft available in the UK RC hobby market.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the VOLANTEX P-51D MUSTANG V2 genuinely suitable for absolute beginners with no RC flying experience? — Yes, absolutely. The Xpilot gyro stabilisation system and three-level flight assistance feature are specifically designed for pilots with no previous experience. The beginner mode provides such substantial automatic stabilisation that the aircraft becomes almost impossible to crash through your control inputs alone. The one-key aerobatic function even lets complete novices experience aerobatic flying without requiring advanced skills. Thousands of beginner pilots have successfully learned to fly using earlier versions of the Mustang, and the V2 iteration improves upon that proven design.
- What battery does the VOLANTEX P-51D MUSTANG require and how long does it take to charge? — The aircraft uses a 3.7V 400mAh lithium polymer battery (a single-cell LiPo), which is included in the ready-to-fly package pre-charged and ready for immediate use. The USB charging cable allows you to charge the battery from any USB power source—a computer, laptop, USB power adapter, or even a mobile phone charger. Charging time depends on the power source's output, but typically requires approximately 30-60 minutes for a full charge from completely discharged. The included battery provides approximately 15 minutes of flight time, meaning you can fly extended sessions before needing to recharge.
- How far can you fly the VOLANTEX P-51D MUSTANG away from the transmitter? — The 2.4GHz radio system provides a control range of approximately 200 metres, a distance that should satisfy any reasonable flying requirement. This range assumes unobstructed line of sight between the aircraft and transmitter, and the actual achievable range may vary slightly depending on environmental conditions and radio interference sources. For practical purposes, 200 metres of control range means you have complete freedom to fly significant distances whilst maintaining reliable radio contact.
- Can the VOLANTEX P-51D MUSTANG be flown indoors as well as outdoors? — Yes, the aircraft's 60-gram flying weight and responsive control system makes it suitable for both indoor and outdoor flying. Outdoor flying typically provides more space and more stable wind conditions, and the aircraft naturally performs better in open areas. However, for indoor flying in gymnasiums, large community halls or similar spaces, the aircraft can be flown successfully thanks to its light weight and slow, controllable flight speed. The absence of a glow fuel engine (it's electrically powered) means there are no fumes or fuel smell issues associated with indoor flying.
- Is any assembly or building required when you receive the VOLANTEX P-51D MUSTANG V2? — No assembly whatsoever. The aircraft arrives fully built, painted, and ready to fly. All internal components including the motor, speed controller, receiver, gyro stabilisation system, servos and battery are factory-installed and pre-programmed. You literally unbox the aircraft, insert four AA batteries into the transmitter, charge the included battery if desired (though it arrives pre-charged), and you can fly immediately. This represents a genuine ready-to-fly (RTF) product with absolutely no technical knowledge required.
- What makes the Xpilot gyro stabilisation system different from basic gyro stabilisation found on other trainer aircraft? — The Xpilot system is a 6-axis gyro stabiliser, meaning it monitors and corrects movement across all six axes of motion—pitch, roll, yaw, and their rates of change. This comprehensive stabilisation provides dramatically superior stability compared to single-axis or dual-axis gyro systems found on cheaper trainer aircraft. The Xpilot system learns pilot inputs and automatically blends its stabilising corrections with pilot control, creating a remarkably smooth, natural-feeling flying experience. The three-level assistance system means you're not locked into a single assistance level—you progress as your skills improve.
- How durable is the EPP foam airframe and what happens if you crash? — EPP foam is specifically engineered for impact absorption and durability. It flexes rather than breaks, absorbs energy from impacts rather than transferring that energy to internal components, and returns to its original shape after most collisions. Minor crashes typically result in no visible damage; the aircraft simply bounces and flies away. More serious crashes might bend the fuselage or wings slightly, but these typically straighten out during flight or can be gently warmed and reshaped. Structural repairs are rarely needed—the aircraft can typically be picked up and flown again immediately. This durability makes the VOLANTEX Mustang an economical choice for learning, as you're not constantly replacing broken components.
- What is the difference between the VOLANTEX P-51D MUSTANG V2 and other VolantexRC trainer aircraft like the Spitfire? — The VOLANTEX P-51D MUSTANG V2 offers four-channel control including aileron for sport flying and aerobatic capability, making it more versatile than entry-level trainers with only three channels. The Mustang's one-key aerobatic function, 6-axis gyro stabilisation, and 400mm wingspan provide superior performance and capability. The Spitfire and other VolantexRC models occupy different performance niches—consult detailed comparison specifications to determine which model best suits your specific flying preferences and skill level.
