Key Features
- High-Voltage Metal-Geared Construction — The A180 utilises metal gearing rather than plastic alternatives, which significantly extends durability and reduces wear over thousands of flight cycles, ensuring your servo maintains precision and responsiveness throughout its operational life.
- 42 Gram Weight Class — At 42 grams, this servo is specifically sized for mid-to-large scale aircraft builds where weight matters but servo size and strength are non-negotiable, providing the perfect balance between heft and performance.
- Digital Servo Technology — Digital servos offer faster response rates, better holding torque, and smoother operation compared to analogue alternatives, which is critical for maintaining aircraft control authority during complex manoeuvres.
- High-Voltage Compatibility — This servo is engineered to operate at elevated voltage ranges (typically 6.0V to 8.4V), allowing you to harness maximum power output from your battery system without damaging the servo, perfect for high-performance applications.
- Professional-Grade Spektrum Brand — Spektrum's reputation for quality means you're buying proven design and engineering that has been tested by professionals and competition flyers worldwide, giving you confidence in every flight.
- Precision Aircraft Control — The A180 is specifically engineered for aircraft applications, delivering the precise control inputs required for aileron, elevator, rudder and flap control on scale models, aerobatic planes and flying wings.
Technical Performance
The Spektrum A180 42g High-Voltage Metal-Geared Digital Servo is engineered to the standards demanded by serious RC aircraft builders and competitive flyers. Its metal-geared transmission provides exceptional durability and smooth power delivery, resisting the wear that plastic gearing suffers under repeated load cycles. The digital servo architecture enables rapid response to control inputs, which is absolutely essential when flying aircraft that demand instant, precise corrections during aggressive manoeuvres or precise trimming in calm conditions. Operating at high voltage (6.0V to 8.4V), the A180 extracts maximum performance from modern lithium-ion and lithium-polymer battery systems whilst maintaining compatibility with standard receiver voltage supplies. The 42-gram weight positions this servo as ideal for aircraft ranging from 2-3kg scale models up to larger aerobatic platforms where servo size must remain proportional to the airframe. The metal gearing and digital circuitry combination ensures holding torque is maintained even under sustained load, critical when an aircraft is being buffeted by wind or when precise trim must be held throughout a flight. This servo has earned a 4.2 out of 5 customer rating, reflecting proven performance across diverse aircraft applications.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does high-voltage mean for this servo and why does it matter? — High-voltage operation means the A180 is designed to work safely and efficiently at voltages between 6.0V and 8.4V, significantly higher than standard servos which typically operate at 4.8V to 6.0V. Higher voltage translates to faster servo speed and greater torque output, enabling more responsive aircraft control and the ability to move larger control surfaces or carry heavier loads without servo lag or strain.
- Is the SPM A180 suitable for beginners building their first RC aircraft? — Whilst the A180 is an excellent servo, beginners might initially consider more budget-friendly alternatives for their first build. However, if you're building a larger or more demanding aircraft, or if you anticipate upgrading later, investing in the A180 from the start is sensible as it will outlast cheaper servos and provide superior performance that makes flying more enjoyable.
- What voltage battery system do I need for the A180? — The A180 is specified for high-voltage operation between 6.0V and 8.4V. This typically means using a 2S LiPo battery (7.4V nominal), which is widely available and affordable. You can also use 2S LiHV batteries (up to 8.7V) for maximum performance, though ensure your receiver and other components support this voltage before upgrading.
- How does the A180 compare to other Spektrum servo options? — The A180 is a premium offering in Spektrum's aircraft servo range. Compared to lighter micro servos (like the A370 at 9 grams), the A180 provides significantly greater torque and load capacity, making it suitable for larger aircraft or control surfaces requiring more authority. The metal gearing ensures durability that plastic-geared alternatives cannot match, justifying the premium price for serious hobbyists.
- Can I use the A180 in a salt-water or wet environment? — Whilst the A180 is a robust digital servo, Spektrum does not specify water-resistant or waterproof ratings for this model. For coastal flying or potentially damp conditions, you should verify the servo's protective housing is adequate or consider additional weatherproofing measures before operating in these environments.
- What type of aircraft is the A180 best suited for? — With its 42-gram weight and high-voltage capability, the A180 excels in mid-to-large scale aircraft including aerobatic trainers, scale warbirds, flying wings, and competition models. It's equally at home controlling ailerons, elevators, rudders and flaps, making it a versatile choice for almost any aircraft application except ultra-light micro models.
