Overview
The ARRMA 20T 0.8Mod Safe-D5 Pinion Gear is an essential replacement component for RC enthusiasts running ARRMA brushless models. This tough steel pinion gear has been specifically engineered to deliver reliable, consistent performance across a wide range of ARRMA RTR (Ready to Run) vehicles, from 1/10 scale monster trucks to 1/8 scale buggies and street bash trucks. Whether you're a competitive racer, a weekend basher, or someone discovering the thrills of RC car ownership in the UK, having quality spare gears in your toolkit is crucial for keeping your RC experience running smoothly without costly downtime.
Pinion gears are critical drivetrain components that directly transfer power from your brushless motor to the main transmission. The 20-tooth configuration with 0.8 module specification makes this gear compatible with a comprehensive range of ARRMA models, including the popular Granite, Senton, Vorteks, Kraton, Outcast, Big Rock, Fury, Gorgon, Quake, Infraction, Mojave, Typhon and Vendetta platforms. If you've experienced wear on your existing pinion gear, suffered accidental damage during a bash session, or simply want to maintain a stock of spares for competitive events, this ARRMA original part is the perfect solution.
What sets the Safe-D5 pinion gear apart from generic aftermarket alternatives is ARRMA's engineering focus on durability and reliability. This isn't just any pinion gear—it's a precision-manufactured component built to withstand the extreme demands of RC driving, whether you're tackling high-speed circuits, rocky terrain, or sandy desert conditions across the UK.
Key Features
- Strong and durable steel construction — This pinion gear is manufactured from high-quality steel that has been specifically chosen for its ability to resist wear, deformation and failure under the intense loads experienced during extreme RC conditions, ensuring your drivetrain remains reliable through countless hours of driving.
- Precision manufactured wide tooth profile — The wide tooth design has been engineered to distribute load evenly across the gear mesh, resulting in noticeably smoother operation, reduced noise, and more efficient power transfer from your brushless motor to the transmission system.
- Safe-D hole design prevents power loss — The distinctive 'D' shaped hole matches the profile of your 5mm motor shaft perfectly, providing a secure mechanical lock that prevents power loss and maintains braking function even if your set-screw accidentally backs out during aggressive driving or competition.
- 5mm motor shaft compatibility — This gear is specifically designed to suit standard 5mm motor shaft diameters, ensuring it will fit directly onto the vast majority of ARRMA brushless motors without requiring adapters or modifications.
- Precision threaded set-screw hole — The accurately machined threaded hole accepts the included M4 × 4mm set-screw, allowing you to achieve a secure, wobble-free connection to your motor shaft that won't loosen under vibration.
- E-clip shaft retention supplied — The included 3.2mm E-clip provides an additional safety feature that prevents accidental removal of the pinion gear from the motor shaft, giving you peace of mind during high-speed runs and competitive racing.
Technical Performance
The 20T 0.8 Module specification is a standard configuration across the ARRMA ecosystem, providing excellent compatibility with both spur gears and motor specifications found in ARRMA's brushless RTR lineup. The 0.8 module refers to the gear pitch—a measurement of tooth size and spacing that directly affects the overall gear ratio and performance characteristics of your drivetrain. With a 20-tooth pinion running against larger spur gears found in ARRMA transmissions, you achieve a mechanical advantage that provides strong acceleration and manageable top speed suitable for diverse driving conditions. The steel construction chosen for this component offers superior durability compared to plastic alternatives, resisting tooth stripping and maintaining consistent mesh quality even after extended use in dusty, sandy or wet British RC tracks. The precision manufacturing process ensures that every pinion gear meets tight tolerance standards, resulting in minimal runout and balanced operation that reduces stress on your ESC, motor bearings and transmission components. This attention to engineering detail means your brushless RC motor can deliver its full power output efficiently, maximising speed, acceleration and runtime while minimising wear on interconnected drivetrain parts. The Safe-D hole design is particularly significant for users who drive their RC cars hard—the mechanical lock prevents catastrophic power loss scenarios where a set-screw failure would strand you trackside, a crucial consideration for competitive racing or long bashings away from your workshop.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Which ARRMA RC models does the 20T 0.8Mod Safe-D5 pinion gear fit? — This pinion gear is compatible with an extensive range of ARRMA brushless vehicles, including the 1/10 scale Big Rock 223S, Granite 223S, Senton 223S, Vorteks 223S, Kraton 4S, Outcast 4S, Fury 223S, Gorgon 223S, Quake 223S, and the 1/8 scale Infraction 223S, Mojave 4S, Typhon 3S and Vendetta 3S models, covering monster trucks, stadium trucks, short-course trucks, buggies and street bash platforms.
- How often should I replace my RC pinion gear? — Pinion gear replacement frequency depends on driving intensity, terrain conditions and maintenance practices. Most RC enthusiasts replace their pinions every 20-40 hours of driving, or sooner if they notice visible tooth wear, mesh issues, or noise changes during operation. Competitive racers often replace them more frequently to maintain peak performance.
- What is the difference between the Safe-D design and a standard pinion gear? — The Safe-D hole design features a distinctive 'D' shaped profile that mechanically locks onto your motor shaft, preventing power loss if the set-screw backs out. Standard round-hole pinions rely entirely on set-screw tension to maintain connection, meaning any loosening of the screw immediately results in loss of drive and braking function, leaving you stranded.
- Can I use this pinion gear on other brand RC cars? — No, this is specifically designed for ARRMA vehicles with 5mm motor shafts and 0.8 module spur gears. Other manufacturers use different gear modules, shaft sizes and hole profiles, so using this gear on incompatible vehicles could result in poor mesh, noise, vibration and potential drivetrain failure.
- What tools do I need to install this pinion gear? — You'll need a small Allen key or hex wrench (typically 1.5mm or 2mm) to tighten the included M4 × 4mm set-screw, a screwdriver or pliers to seat the E-clip, and ideally a small gear puller tool if you're removing an old pinion. Most RC toolkit essentials include these items.
- Is this suitable for beginners? — Yes, this is a straightforward replacement part suitable for anyone with basic RC maintenance experience. Installation requires only a few minutes and simple hand tools. If you're new to RC car maintenance, this is an excellent introduction to drivetrain work.
