This advanced ESC represents the pinnacle of brushless motor control technology, engineered to deliver exceptional performance, reliability and value for money. Whether you're flying fixed-wing RC planes, flying wings, or other electric-powered aircraft, the Skywalker 80A V2 provides the precision throttle control and robust protection systems that serious RC pilots demand.

Built around a high-performance 32-bit ARM M0 processor running at up to 96MHz, this speed controller supports maximum motor speeds of 300,000 RPM (on 2-pole motors), making it suitable for a wide range of brushless motor configurations. The Skywalker 80A V2 is part of Hobbywing's renowned low-voltage ESC series, trusted by hobbyists and competitors alike. With continuous current handling of 80 amps and peak current capacity of 100 amps, this ESC is engineered to handle the demanding power requirements of modern RC aircraft whilst maintaining exceptional stability and response characteristics.

The combination of advanced technology, multiple protection modes, and programmable features makes the Skywalker 80A V2 an excellent choice for anyone serious about RC flying in the UK. From beginners taking their first flights to experienced pilots pushing the boundaries of aerobatic performance, this speed controller delivers the reliability and performance you need.

Key Features

  • High-Performance 32-bit ARM M0 Processor — Running at up to 96MHz, this advanced processor enables lightning-fast response times and support for maximum motor speeds up to 300,000 RPM on 2-pole motors, ensuring your aircraft responds instantly to every input from your transmitter.
  • 80A/100A Continuous/Peak Current Rating — The robust 80-amp continuous rating with 100-amp peak capacity provides sufficient power for demanding brushless motors whilst maintaining thermal stability during extended flights, allowing you to safely push your aircraft to its limits.
  • DEO Technology (Driving Efficiency Optimization) — This proprietary Hobbywing technology optimises driving efficiency through active freewheeling, delivering faster and smoother throttle response, better flight stability and flexibility, higher overall driving efficiency for longer flight times, and importantly, lower operating temperatures for more reliable performance throughout your flying sessions.
  • Reverse Brake System with Patented Technology — The registered patented reverse brake feature can be enabled with linear reverse brake mode to effectively shorten landing distances and simulate real aircraft landing characteristics, whilst normal brake mode and brake disabled modes are also available with fully adjustable brake amounts to suit your flying style and aircraft requirements.
  • Search Mode for Aircraft Recovery — If your aircraft lands in a visually obstructed area, search mode pulses the motor to produce an audible beep, helping you locate your model even in long grass or bushes, making recovery far easier and reducing the stress of lost aircraft scenarios.
  • Comprehensive Protection Systems — Multiple protection features safeguard both your ESC and aircraft investment, including abnormal input voltage protection, ESC thermal protection to prevent overheating, throttle signal loss detection with fail-safe capability, and low voltage cutoff to protect your battery from dangerous over-discharge.
  • LED Program Card Compatibility — The Skywalker 80A V2 supports programming via LED program card and directly from your transmitter, allowing you to easily customise settings to your preference without requiring additional expensive equipment, making setup quick and straightforward.
  • Generous Wire Lengths and Quality Connectors — Supplied with 12 AWG (150mm) input wires in red and black for clean, reliable power connections, and 14 AWG (100mm) output wires, plus 4.0mm gold connectors that ensure rock-solid electrical connections with minimal resistance.

Technical Performance

The Skywalker 80A V2 represents a significant advancement in brushless ESC technology for RC aircraft. Its 32-bit ARM M0 processor operating at 96MHz delivers exceptional processing power, enabling smooth, responsive control that RC pilots throughout the UK have come to expect from Hobbywing products. The controller handles 80 amps continuously with 100-amp peak capacity, making it versatile enough for everything from small sports flyers to larger, more powerful aircraft designs. Compatibility with 3-6S LiPo batteries (up to 22.2 volts) provides flexibility in aircraft power system design, whilst the switch-mode BEC output of 5V at 7 amps ensures reliable power to your receiver and servo systems. The construction is compact and lightweight at just 79 grams, allowing integration into tight airframes without excessive weight penalties. The quality of components throughout — from the gold-plated connectors to the robust aluminium housing — reflects Hobbywing's commitment to reliability. The active freewheeling technology reduces heat generation significantly compared to conventional controllers, meaning your ESC runs cooler during demanding flight sessions, extending component lifespan and improving overall reliability in the field.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the maximum battery voltage for the Skywalker 80A V2? — The controller accepts 3-6S LiPo batteries with a maximum voltage of 22.2 volts (6S LiPo), making it compatible with most standard brushless aircraft power systems used by RC pilots in the UK.
  • Can I programme the ESC without buying additional equipment? — Yes, the Skywalker 80A V2 supports programming directly through your transmitter, eliminating the need for expensive programming devices. However, an optional LED Program Card is supported if you prefer that method of configuration.
  • What is DEO Technology and why does it matter? — DEO (Driving Efficiency Optimization) is Hobbywing's proprietary technology that optimises motor efficiency through intelligent active freewheeling. This delivers faster throttle response, better flight stability, improved power efficiency for longer flights, and critically, lower operating temperatures for increased reliability during extended flying sessions.
  • How does the reverse brake feature work? — The patented reverse brake system pulses current to the motor in reverse when you apply reverse throttle input, effectively braking the propeller and shortening landing distance in a way that mimics real aircraft landing characteristics. You can enable or disable this feature and adjust brake intensity in normal brake mode depending on your aircraft type and flying preferences.
  • Is this ESC suitable for beginners? — The Skywalker 80A V2 is an excellent choice for beginner RC pilots because it combines user-friendly programming (via transmitter), comprehensive protection systems that safeguard against common mistakes, and reliable performance. The robust build quality means it forgives the occasional rough landing that beginning pilots might experience.
  • What is the search mode for and when would I use it? — Search mode pulses the motor to create an audible beeping sound, helping you locate your aircraft if it lands in tall grass, bushes, or other visually obstructed areas. This feature has saved countless RC planes from permanent loss, making it invaluable insurance against the frustration of misplaced models.
  • How much weight does the ESC add to my aircraft? — At just 79 grams, the Skywalker 80A V2 is remarkably lightweight for its power handling capability, making it suitable for integration into aircraft ranging from lightweight foamies to larger composite designs without excessive weight penalties that would harm flight performance.
  • What connectors does this ESC use? — The controller features 4.0mm gold connectors (female) on both input and output, which are industry-standard connectors used across the RC hobby. The high-quality gold plating ensures excellent electrical contact and minimal voltage loss.
  • Can I use this ESC in brushed motor aircraft? — No, the Skywalker 80A V2 is specifically designed for brushless motors only. Using it with brushed motors will damage the ESC. Always verify you have a brushless motor system before purchasing this controller.
  • What is the difference between the Skywalker 80A V2 and smaller or larger models in the range? — Hobbywing offers the Skywalker V2 series in various ratings from 15A to 100A, with the 80A model sitting in the mid-to-upper range. The 80A model is ideal for mid-sized to larger aircraft, whilst smaller ratings (40-60A) suit lighter aircraft, and the 100A model handles the most demanding power requirements of large, high-speed aircraft.
