Technical Performance
This combo delivers exceptional engineering for serious RC car UK enthusiasts seeking competition-grade performance. The ESC specification of 330A/2000A (continuous/peak) current with 6-12S LiPo battery support provides immense power delivery, whilst the 56118SL 1600KV motor with 4-pole configuration produces a maximum no-load current of 16A and supports up to 78,000 RPM maximum speed. The motor measures 56mm outer diameter by 118mm length with an 8mm shaft diameter, weighing 1,270 grams, and utilises premium bearing specifications with front and rear bearings providing smooth, low-friction rotation. The ESC itself measures 94.5mm × 59.4mm × 51.6mm and weighs 450 grams including the input and output wires and connectors, making it compact despite its powerful rating. Input wiring consists of two 8AWG red and black wires at 200mm length, with AS150-F (red) and AS150-M (black) anti-spark plugs on the input, whilst output uses 8.0mm gold female connectors for motor connection. The integrated BEC operates in switch regulator mode with 6-8.4V voltage input range, powered by the ESC itself. The large 4080?F built-in capacitor provides stable power delivery during aggressive acceleration, whilst the framed 45mm × 45mm × 10mm fan keeps the 6-8.4V powered electronics cool during extended use. This combination represents serious brushless RC technology engineered for 1/8th, 1/7th and other extreme-speed scale RC vehicles where reliability and consistent performance matter most.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Hobbywing EZRUN MAX5 HV Plus G2 ESC suitable for beginners? — This ESC is designed for experienced RC enthusiasts and competitors rather than beginners. The sensored brushless system, high power output, and advanced programmable features require knowledge of RC systems. However, the Bluetooth connectivity and mobile app do make configuration more accessible than traditional programming methods. If you're new to brushless RC cars, we recommend starting with a lower-power combo and working your way up to this professional-grade equipment.
- What battery does this combo need and how do I choose the right one? — This combo supports 6S to 12S LiPo battery packs. A 6S battery delivers around 22.2 volts, whilst a 12S battery delivers 44.4 volts. For the 1600KV motor, a 6S battery is suitable for moderate performance, whilst 8S and 12S batteries unlock the true extreme-speed potential. For extreme-speed applications, most users pair this combo with 8S or 12S batteries with minimum 30C continuous discharge rating. The higher the cell count (S rating), the faster your vehicle will go, so start with what's appropriate for your venue and vehicle weight.
- Can I use this combo with sensorless brushless motors? — Whilst the EZRUN MAX5 HV Plus G2 ESC supports both sensored and sensorless brushless motors, this combo includes the 56118SL sensored motor which is optimised for this ESC. The 'SL' designation indicates sensored operation, which provides smooth low-RPM performance and precise commutation. You could use sensorless motors with this ESC, but you wouldn't benefit from the sensored performance advantages or the Turbo Timing feature which is exclusive to compatible sensored Hobbywing motors.
- What is the difference between the 56118SL 1600KV and the 5690 motor mentioned in the specs? — The combo includes the 56118SL 1600KV, which features a 56mm diameter and 118mm length with 1600KV power rating. Hobbywing also offers the 5690 in 2400KV, which is physically smaller (56mm outer diameter, 90mm length). The 1600KV motor in this combo spins slower but produces more torque, making it suitable for heavier vehicles or situations where you want strong acceleration. The 2400KV would spin faster but produce less torque. Both are 4-pole sensored motors compatible with Turbo Timing on this ESC.
- How does the Bluetooth connectivity work and what is the effective range? — The ESC has a built-in Bluetooth module that communicates with the HW Link mobile app on compatible smartphones. The effective Bluetooth range is approximately 5 metres in open field conditions, which is sufficient for trackside adjustments and data monitoring. You can use Bluetooth to adjust ESC parameters, check real-time performance data, view historical records and curve graphs, and update firmware. This wireless capability makes configuration much faster than traditional wired programming methods.
- What makes the Turbo Timing feature valuable for high-speed racing? — Turbo Timing is an advanced timing adjustment feature (up to 24 degrees) that optimises commutation for maximum speed on compatible sensored motors. When enabled on Hobbywing EZRUN 5690/56118 G2 sensored motors, it can boost maximum speed by approximately 18%, which is significant in competitive environments where every mph counts. This feature is exclusive to sensored Hobbywing motors and cannot be used with other motor brands.
- Is this combo waterproof and can I use it in wet conditions? — The ESC carries an IP67 protection rating, meaning it is splashproof, water-resistant, and dustproof under normal use conditions, having been tested to GB/T 4208-2017 (China) and IEC 60529 (International) standards. However, this protection is not permanent and may diminish over time due to aging. You should avoid prolonged submersion in water, as this will damage internal components. For occasional splashing and outdoor use in typical UK weather, the IP67 rating provides excellent protection.
- What programming options are available for this ESC? — You have three convenient programming methods. First, use the HW Link mobile app via the built-in Bluetooth module (effective range approximately 5 metres). Second, connect an LCD G2 Program Box to the independent programming port for menu-based configuration. Third, use the OTA Programmer (5-12.6V working voltage, Bluetooth 4.0 or higher) for wireless programming. You cannot programme via the SET button on the ESC itself with this model. This flexibility means you can adjust settings trackside using your phone or use dedicated programmers for detailed configuration.
- Does the ESC include a built-in BEC and what can it power? — Yes, the ESC features a super built-in BEC with maximum output of 28A continuous current. It provides adjustable voltage options of 6V, 7.4V, or 8.4V, operating in switch regulator mode. This high-current output means you can power strong and high-voltage servos without needing an external battery eliminator circuit. The 28A continuous rating gives you complete freedom in servo selection, even high-torque models designed for extreme-speed vehicles.
- What materials and construction methods are used in the 56118SL motor? — The motor is built with premium materials throughout: CNC-machined aluminium housing for high structural strength, top-tier bearings (D22×D8×T7 front bearing and D19×D8×T6 rear bearing) for smooth rotation, ultra-thin silicon steel laminations for efficient magnetic flux, high-temperature-resistant oxygen-free copper wires to handle current extremes, a carbon fibre-wrapped explosion-proof rotor for safety and durability, and a high-toughness alloy output shaft. These premium materials ensure the motor can handle the extreme demands of high-speed RC racing.
- How does the data logging feature help me optimise my vehicle setup? — The ESC stores up to 10 minutes of recent operation data including extreme values and real-time readings. Via the HW Link mobile app, you can review historical data displayed as curve graphs, allowing you to analyse performance characteristics, identify temperature spikes, monitor acceleration patterns, and understand how different settings affect your vehicle. This information helps you make informed decisions about gear ratios, battery selection, timing adjustments, and other setup parameters to extract maximum performance.
