Technical Performance

The Hobbywing Platinum 4125SL 580KV is engineered for 6S LiPo battery systems, delivering peak performance with nominal voltage of 22.2V. At idle, the motor draws just 3.9A, demonstrating exceptional efficiency even when loitering or flying at reduced throttle. Under maximum load conditions (measured at ambient temperatures of 25°C or lower), this motor achieves a maximum current draw of 119.7A sustained for 1 minute and 17 seconds, producing peak power output of 2289W and generating maximum static thrust of 7.35kg. These specifications make it perfectly suited for intermediate to advanced fixed-wing platforms requiring genuine performance and response.

The motor's internal resistance is just 9.5m?, one of the lowest in its class, ensuring minimal energy loss and maximum efficiency. This low resistance also means the motor runs cooler under load, protecting your ESC and extending flight duration. The 580KV specification indicates that for every volt of input, the motor will rotate at approximately 580 RPM with no load attached—this moderate KV rating makes it ideal for larger propellers and direct-drive applications where low-end torque and smooth power delivery are valued over ultimate top-speed performance. The motor size of ?49.5 × 77.3mm with a stator diameter of ?40.6 × 25mm provides an excellent power-to-weight ratio, whilst the ?6mm motor shaft diameter is the industry standard for fixed-wing applications.

Construction quality is exceptional throughout. The stator utilises high-standard silicon steel sheet with 180°C high-temperature resistance paint coating, ensuring structural integrity and electrical isolation even during sustained hard flying. The enamelled wire is rated for continuous operation at 200°C, providing substantial thermal margin above typical motor operating temperatures. The motor features 12 stator slots with 14 magnetic poles (12N14P configuration), a proven design topology that delivers smooth, linear power characteristics. Dynamic balance is held to an extremely tight tolerance of ?10mg, ensuring vibration levels are virtually imperceptible even at high RPM. The 696ZZ bearings provide smooth, reliable rotation with minimal friction, and the motor passes 500V AC high voltage isolation testing, confirming electrical safety and insulation integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Hobbywing Platinum 4125SL 580KV suitable for beginners learning fixed-wing RC flying? — Whilst this motor is technically capable of beginner-friendly operation, it's primarily engineered for intermediate to advanced pilots who understand motor selection, ESC compatibility, and propeller matching. Beginners would benefit from starting with a complete ready-to-fly (RTF) or bind-and-fly (BNF) system before upgrading individual components like motors. That said, the Platinum range's exceptional build quality and reliability make it a sensible long-term investment once you've mastered the basics.
  • What battery does the Platinum 4125SL 580KV require? — This motor is purpose-designed for 6S LiPo battery packs, which provide a nominal voltage of 22.2V (3 cells in series, then doubled). A typical 6S setup might be 2200mAh to 5000mAh capacity depending on your aircraft size and desired flight duration. Hobbywing specifically recommends 6S LiPo in their official specifications, and using a different voltage will compromise performance and potentially damage the motor.
  • What ESC should I pair with this motor? — Hobbywing manufactures the Platinum range of ESCs and officially recommends either the PLATINUM 120A V4 or PLATINUM 150A V5.1 for this motor. These ESCs are specifically tuned to work with Platinum motors, ensuring optimal performance, smooth throttle response, and reliable protection against over-current and thermal shutdown. The 120A unit is sufficient for most fixed-wing applications, whilst the 150A provides additional headroom for aggressive manoeuvres or larger airframes.
  • How does the 580KV version compare to other KV ratings in the Platinum 4125 range? — Hobbywing offers the Platinum 4125 in three KV variants: 250KV, 450KV, and 580KV. The 250KV version is designed for 12S LiPo systems and delivers maximum torque for large, heavy aircraft or heavy payload applications. The 450KV bridges the gap, also running on 6S LiPo but with slightly higher RPM than the 580KV. The 580KV (this model) spins faster, generating peak RPM of approximately 12,876 on 6S, making it ideal for planes prioritising speed and responsiveness over raw lifting power. Choose based on your aircraft's weight, desired flight characteristics, and battery system voltage.
  • What propeller sizes work best with this motor? — Hobbywing's official recommendations for the 580KV on 6S LiPo are 14×6E, 14×7E, and 15×6E propellers. These sizes have been tested to keep the motor within safe current and temperature parameters whilst delivering optimal thrust and efficiency. Using significantly larger or smaller propellers will alter current draw and performance characteristics; larger props increase current draw and temperature, whilst smaller props reduce available thrust. Always verify propeller selection against your ESC's maximum current rating.
  • Is this motor waterproof or suitable for seaplane flying? — The Hobbywing Platinum 4125SL is not specifically rated as waterproof. Whilst the motor features high-quality insulation and sealed bearings, extended exposure to saltwater or freshwater submersion is not recommended. If you're flying near water, standard precautions such as applying protective coatings or conformal sealant to the windings may improve water resistance, but Hobbywing does not officially warrant waterproof operation.
  • How long will this motor last in typical flying? — With proper maintenance, quality ESC, appropriate propeller selection, and correct battery voltage, the Platinum 4125SL should deliver several seasons of reliable service. The sealed 696ZZ bearings, reinforced rotor assembly, and premium materials mean failure rates are exceptionally low compared with budget motors. Regular inspection for bearing wear and rotor play, plus occasional cleaning to remove debris, will maximize motor lifespan. Most failures occur due to incorrect voltage, over-propping (using propellers too large), or ESC malfunction rather than motor defect.
  • What makes Hobbywing Platinum motors different from budget alternatives? — Every aspect reflects premium engineering: double dynamic balancing, 2.5% efficiency advantage, 30% extended runtime, patented propeller locking system, JNEH1200 iron cores, 200°C rated wire, premium bearings, and precision manufacturing tolerances. Collectively, these features deliver smoother operation, better reliability, longer flight times, and superior overall performance. When you buy Hobbywing Platinum, you're not just buying a motor—you're investing in proven engineering excellence and decades of manufacturer reputation.
