Technical Performance
The Hobbywing Skywalker 2320SL 860KV motor is a sensorless brushless outrunner motor designed for 3-4S LiPo battery systems, making it compatible with a wide range of fixed-wing RC aircraft platforms commonly used throughout the UK hobby community. With a KV rating of 860KV, this motor provides an excellent balance between speed and torque, allowing pilots to select propellers suited to their specific aircraft and flying style. The motor operates with a 12N14P pole configuration, delivering smooth power delivery and responsive control characteristics. At full 14.8V (4S LiPo) operation, the motor draws just 1.5A under no-load conditions, indicating excellent efficiency that translates to longer flight times and reduced battery drain when the motor is spinning freely. The internal resistance of 48.4 milliohms is relatively low, meaning minimal heat generation during operation and maximum power transfer to your propeller system. The motor is rated for a maximum continuous current of 36 amps over a 90-second burst, with maximum continuous power output reaching an impressive 540 watts over the same 90-second window. The 684ZZ bearings with dimensions of D9 x d4 x 4mm provide smooth, reliable rotation with minimal friction, whilst the precision-engineered 4mm shaft diameter accommodates standard motor shaft adapters and propeller mounting systems. The motor measures 28.8mm in diameter and 54mm in length, making it a compact yet powerful solution for mid-sized RC aircraft. At just 93 grams, the lightweight construction helps minimise the load on your aircraft's airframe whilst delivering the power needed for impressive performance. Hobbywing recommends pairing this motor with a Skywalker V2 30A-40A electronic speed controller to ensure optimal performance and reliability. For 3S LiPo configurations, suitable propellers include 12x6E or 13x6.5E sizes, whilst 4S LiPo users can opt for 10x5E, 10x6E, or 11x5.5E propellers depending on their desired flight characteristics and aircraft weight.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between the Skywalker 2320SL and other Skywalker motor sizes? — Hobbywing offers the Skywalker motor series in three main sizes: the 2312, 2316, and 2320. The 2320 is the largest of the three, measuring 28.8mm in diameter and 54mm in length, making it suitable for larger aircraft that demand greater power output. The 2312 and 2316 are progressively smaller and lighter, suited to smaller aircraft platforms. The 2320SL 860KV variant offers one of the most power-efficient configurations in the 2320 range, providing excellent torque whilst maintaining manageable power consumption.
- What battery does the Skywalker 2320SL 860KV require? — This motor is designed for 3S or 4S LiPo battery packs, with nominal voltages of 11.1V (3S) and 14.8V (4S) respectively. For optimal performance and to match the manufacturer's specifications, a 4S LiPo battery is recommended, as the no-load current and performance figures listed are all specified at 14.8V (4S nominal). Battery capacities typically range from 2200mAh to 5000mAh depending on your aircraft weight and desired flight duration.
- How much weight does the Skywalker 2320SL motor add to my aircraft? — At just 93 grams, the motor itself adds minimal weight to your RC aircraft, making it ideal for mid-sized fixed-wing models where every gram counts towards achieving optimal flight performance. This lightweight construction is achieved through Hobbywing's careful engineering and material selection, ensuring you get maximum power without excessive weight penalty.
- What size propeller should I use with the Skywalker 2320SL 860KV? — For 3S LiPo systems, Hobbywing recommends either 12x6E or 13x6.5E propellers. For 4S LiPo systems, the recommended options are 10x5E, 10x6E, or 11x5.5E propellers. Your specific choice within these ranges should be determined by your aircraft weight, desired flight characteristics, and the total power budget available from your battery system.
- Is the Skywalker 2320SL suitable for beginners? — This motor is well-suited for intermediate to advanced RC pilots who have experience flying fixed-wing aircraft and managing brushless motor systems. Beginners new to RC flying should consider starting with ready-to-fly aircraft packages that include pre-matched motors, ESCs, and aircraft. However, if you're upgrading an existing aircraft or building from a kit, the Skywalker 2320SL offers excellent value and performance at a competitive price point.
- Does the Skywalker 2320SL come with an ESC? — No, the motor is sold separately from the electronic speed controller. Hobbywing recommends pairing it with a Skywalker V2 30A-40A ESC for optimal performance and reliability. The ESC must be purchased separately and matched to your battery configuration and motor specifications.
- How does the 860KV rating affect flight performance? — The 860KV rating means the motor will rotate 860 revolutions per minute for every volt applied. This moderate KV rating provides an excellent balance between speed and torque, making it versatile for various aircraft types and flying styles. Lower KV motors (like this 860KV) are generally better suited to larger propellers and slower, more efficient flight, whilst higher KV motors favour smaller, faster propellers and higher speed performance.
- What makes the Skywalker 2320SL better than cheaper alternatives? — The Skywalker 2320SL achieves approximately 10% more output power than comparable motors with similar specifications from other manufacturers. This performance advantage comes from premium construction using JNEH1200 silicon steel, N48 magnets, precision CNC machining, and high-quality bearings. The result is a more efficient, reliable, and durable motor that will serve you well for years of RC flying enjoyment.
