Key Features

  • Sensored Brushless Technology — The EZRUN 56118SD G2 operates in full sensored mode, meaning the motor includes an independent high-precision encoder that constantly outputs pure rotor position signals. This eliminates sensor signal interference and allows the motor to work with exceptional stability whilst providing smoother acceleration curves and more predictable handling characteristics across the entire throttle range.
  • Perfect ESC/Motor Compatibility — This motor is specifically engineered to work in perfect harmony with the Hobbywing EZRUN MAX5 HV G2 ESC. When paired together, the combination automatically recognises the motor and operates in full sensored mode, delivering smooth and precise control with exceptional linearity at low speeds. The ESC's software also provides dedicated overheat thermal protection for the motor, preventing damage during sustained high-performance driving.
  • Explosive Power with Excellent Low-Speed Control — The 650KV rating delivers strong, explosive acceleration that makes violent start-ups and aggressive manoeuvres feel responsive and immediate. Equally impressive is the motor's excellent linearity at low speeds, allowing you to make fine, delicate adjustments and easily execute precise manoeuvres whether you're walking the vehicle slowly or flying down a slope at full throttle.
  • IP67 Waterproof and Dustproof Rating — The EZRUN 56118SD G2 features a comprehensive IP67 protection level that provides excellent waterproof and dustproof performance. This rating allows the motor to easily cope with various weather conditions and harsh environments, including mud, sand, dust, ice, snow and water. Note that this protection is splash-resistant and water-resistant under normal use; prolonged soaking should be avoided as the protection level may decline over time due to ageing.
  • New Sensor Wire Interface with Enhanced Waterproofing — The redesigned sensor wire interface represents a major upgrade over traditional motor interfaces. It not only enhances the overall motor protection level but specifically solves the waterproofing problems that plagued previous generation sensored motors, ensuring long-term reliability in demanding conditions.
  • Modular Detachable Design for Easy Maintenance — The motor adopts a modular detachable structure that separates into distinct components including the front end bell, stator set, rotor and rear end bell. This innovative design makes daily cleaning and maintenance genuinely convenient, allowing you to keep the motor running at peak efficiency and effectively prolonging its service life.
  • Premium Construction Materials — Every component of the EZRUN 56118SD G2 has been meticulously selected and checked layer-by-layer. The motor features a high-hardness aluminium CNC shell that provides both durability and excellent heat dissipation, high-quality precision bearings from recognised brands, high-strength Kevlar fibre-wound explosion-proof rotors that can handle extreme power levels, top-of-the-line brands for all components, high-temperature-resistant oxygen-free copper wires for maximum efficiency, ultra-thin silicon steel sheets that minimise losses, and durable alloy output shafts that can withstand constant stress.
  • Spiral Groove Heat Dissipation Casing — The motor casing incorporates an innovatively designed spiral groove heat dissipation structure that combines functional efficiency with visual elegance. This isn't merely aesthetic — the spiral grooves work actively to draw heat away from the motor's core, helping maintain optimal operating temperatures during sustained high-performance running.
  • Multiple KV Options Available — Hobbywing recognises that different drivers and different terrains demand different gearing characteristics. That's why the EZRUN 56118 platform is offered in three KV variants: 650KV (suited to 8-12S LiPo batteries), 800KV (also 8-12S), and 1100KV (6-8S batteries). You can select the ideal KV to suit your chosen battery voltage and terrain type.

Technical Performance

The EZRUN 56118SD 650KV Motor G2 is engineered to deliver outstanding performance across a wide range of driving scenarios. At 650KV with an 8-12S LiPo battery compatibility range, this motor produces a no-load current of 5.5A, ensuring efficient operation with minimal unnecessary power draw. The physical motor measures 56mm in diameter with a total length of 119.2mm, whilst the output shaft is precisely machined to 8mm diameter, ensuring perfect fitment with standard 1/5th scale drivetrain components. The motor weighs a substantial 1272g, reflecting the premium materials and engineering that goes into every unit.

The internal construction showcases Hobbywing's meticulous engineering standards. The four-pole brushless configuration operates with ultra-high precision, with the stator and rotor manufactured to tolerances that minimise vibration and ensure smooth, predictable power delivery. The front bearing (D22*D8*T7) and rear bearing (D19*D8*T6) are precision components from leading manufacturers, ensuring the rotor spins with minimal friction whilst maintaining perfect alignment under load. The high-strength Kevlar fibre-wound rotor can withstand the extreme centrifugal forces generated during high-RPM operation, whilst the ultra-thin silicon steel laminations minimise eddy current losses and maximise efficiency. The oxygen-free copper windings are hand-wound using traditional techniques to ensure perfect consistency, and every wire is insulated with high-temperature-resistant enamel that maintains integrity even when the motor reaches operating temperatures.

When paired with the EzRun MAX5 HV G2 ESC, this motor achieves its full potential. The ESC's 250A continuous current rating (with peak bursts up to 1600A) provides ample power headroom, whilst the MAX5 HV G2's support for up to 12S LiPo batteries (44.4V) means you can exploit the full performance envelope of the 650KV motor. The ESC features turbo timing technology that can adjust timing up to 24 degrees, optimising power delivery characteristics across different throttle ranges. The full-sensored operation enabled by this motor's precision encoder means throttle response is immediate and linear, with no dead spots or unexpected behaviour — crucial qualities for both competitive racing and high-speed bashing in UK weather conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Hobbywing EZRUN 56118SD 650KV G2 motor suitable for beginners? — Whilst this is an advanced motor requiring compatible ESC and battery infrastructure, the sensored technology actually makes it easier to control than older sensorless designs. However, it's most suitable for intermediate to advanced 1/5th scale drivers who already have experience with large-scale brushless RC vehicles and understand battery safety protocols. If you're new to RC, we recommend starting with a ready-to-run kit before investing in individual motors.
  • What battery does the EZRUN 56118SD 650KV need? — This motor is rated for 8-12S LiPo batteries, meaning you can use configurations from 8S (29.6V nominal) up to 12S (44.4V nominal). The no-load current is 5.5A, so under load with a typical 1/5th scale vehicle, expect to see considerably higher current draw — the paired ESC can handle up to 250A continuous. Your battery should be matched to the current demands of your specific vehicle setup.
  • What makes the G2 generation better than previous Hobbywing motors? — The G2 generation introduces several meaningful improvements. The new sensor wire interface solves waterproofing issues that plagued earlier sensored motors, the modular detachable design makes maintenance far more convenient, and the sensored algorithm has been refined for even smoother operation. When paired with the EZRUN MAX5 HV G2 ESC, you get full sensored mode operation with improved performance across the entire throttle range.
  • Can this motor be used with non-Hobbywing ESCs? — Technically, sensored motors can operate with many sensored ESCs from other manufacturers thanks to standardised sensor interfaces. However, Hobbywing strongly recommends pairing this motor with the EZRUN MAX5 HV G2 ESC to achieve perfect compatibility and to unlock the motor overheat protection function. When using non-Hobbywing motors with the MAX5 HV G2 ESC, the turbo timing feature cannot be activated.
  • How does the sensored brushless system improve driving experience? — Sensored brushless motors use an encoder to precisely detect rotor position, allowing the ESC to engage the correct coils at precisely the right moment. This eliminates the sudden power surge you get with sensorless designs when the rotor aligns with the magnetic field, resulting in smoother throttle response, better low-speed control and more predictable handling. For competitive racing or technical trail driving, sensored operation is a significant advantage.
  • Is this motor suitable for muddy and wet UK weather? — Yes, the IP67 waterproof rating means the motor is splash-resistant and water-resistant under normal use, and it can easily cope with mud, sand, dust and wet weather conditions. However, the rating assumes normal splash and water exposure — prolonged soaking should be avoided as protection may decline over time. Always rinse the motor with fresh water after running in muddy conditions.
  • What vehicles is this motor compatible with? — The EZRUN 56118 is a 1/5th scale motor designed for large platform buggies and trucks. Specific examples mentioned include the Losi DBXL-E and Losi 5T Electrified. You can also use it with vehicles from ARRMA (such as the Kraton 8S and Outcast 8S) and similar 1/5th scale platforms, provided you have compatible mounting hardware. Always verify motor mounting compatibility before purchase.
  • How much maintenance does this motor require? — The modular detachable design makes maintenance straightforward. You can separate the motor into its component parts (front end bell, stator set, rotor, rear end bell) for thorough cleaning, especially important after running in dusty or muddy conditions. Regular cleaning helps maintain efficiency and prolongs motor life. No internal brushes or commutator cleaning is required, unlike brushed motors.
  • What's the difference between 650KV, 800KV and 1100KV versions? — KV (kilovolt) is the motor's speed constant — higher KV means more RPM per volt of input. The 650KV version (this model) offers the best torque and acceleration with 8-12S batteries, making it ideal for general driving. The 800KV provides a middle ground, whilst the 1100KV is for drivers wanting maximum top speed on smaller batteries (6-8S). Choose based on your battery voltage and whether you prioritise acceleration or top speed.
