Overview

The Hobbywing XeRun AXE 4274 R3 1700KV Sensored Brushless Motor represents the pinnacle of modern crawler motor technology, purpose-built for serious RC enthusiasts who demand maximum power and reliability from their 1/8th and 1/6th scale rock crawlers. Whether you're tackling challenging terrain in the UK countryside or competing at your local RC club, this high-performance brushless motor delivers the torque and control needed to conquer any obstacle. As an authorised Hobbywing distributor, RC Model Shop is proud to offer this advanced sensored motor system that has earned recognition among competitive crawlers and weekend bashers alike.

Compared to its predecessor, the R2 motor, the AXE R3 boasts a remarkable 106% increase in maximum output power whilst maintaining an impressive 11% improvement in efficiency. This means you get significantly more grunt where it matters, without draining your LiPo battery as quickly. The motor is designed to work seamlessly with popular 1/8th and 1/6th scale crawler platforms including the Axial SCX6, KM Ford Raptor F150, and Yikong YK4082, making it a versatile choice for a wide variety of crawler builds. The black anodised aluminium construction not only looks purposeful but also provides excellent heat dissipation during extended off-road sessions.

This is a sensored motor, meaning it features advanced magnetic position detection technology that enables smooth, predictable acceleration and precise throttle control. If you're upgrading your RC crawler or building a new rig from scratch, the AXE 4274 R3 is engineered to deliver performance and reliability that justifies the investment. Available exclusively at RC Model Shop with full UK support.

Key Features

  • 6S LiPo Compatible — The motor supports up to 6S LiPo battery configurations (3-6S), giving you the flexibility to run higher cell counts for increased power output. This broad voltage range means you can match the motor to whatever battery pack you already own or are planning to purchase, making it adaptable to your specific crawler setup.
  • 106% Power Increase Over R2 — Compared to the previous generation XeRun AXE R2 motor, this R3 variant delivers significantly more output power. This dramatic increase in performance translates to better hill-climbing ability, more responsive acceleration, and the capacity to handle heavier 1/6th scale crawler builds that would struggle with older motor designs.
  • 11% Improved Efficiency — Even with the massive power boost, Hobbywing engineers have managed to improve efficiency by 11% compared to the R2. This means longer run times from your battery pack and less heat generation during extended use, allowing your crawler to work harder for longer without overheating concerns.
  • IP67 Waterproof Rating — The entire motor assembly features IP67 water and dust protection, specifically engineered with Hobbywing's proven waterproof sensor harness design. This protection allows you to operate your crawler in wet, muddy, and dusty conditions typical of UK outdoor RC venues. The motor will handle splash, spray, and exposure to water during normal operation, though extended submersion should be avoided as this may damage internal components over time.
  • Precision Magnetic Encoder Sensor — Built into the motor is an advanced magnetic encoding sensor that provides position feedback 60 times more accurate than traditional Hall-effect sensors found in standard brushless motors. This exceptional accuracy ensures three-phase signal consistency and delivers precise rotor position information, resulting in smoother power delivery, better throttle linearity, and more predictable handling characteristics on technical terrain.
  • Sensored Brushless Design — The sensored configuration means the motor produces zero cogging and provides smooth operation from zero RPM, delivering immediate response to throttle inputs. For crawlers where low-speed control and smooth power application are critical, this sensored architecture makes a substantial difference in drivability and precision during technical manoeuvres.
  • Premium Construction Materials — The motor is engineered with a high-quality aluminium CNC-machined shell for durability and thermal management, premium-grade bearings from recognised bearing manufacturers, ultra-thin silicon steel laminations for efficient magnetic flux transfer, 200°C high-temperature-resistant enamelled copper wire that withstands extreme operating conditions, and a high-toughness alloy output shaft designed to handle the rigours of aggressive crawling.
  • Versatile Mounting Options — The motor features four sets of 25.4mm mounting holes plus additional M3 and M4 threaded mounting points. This standard 25.4mm spacing is widely supported across modern crawler designs. If your frame requires 30mm spacing, an optional motor conversion adapter plate (model 30850501) is available for separate purchase, ensuring compatibility with virtually any 1/8th or 1/6th scale crawler platform currently on the market.
  • Four-Pole Configuration — The motor utilises a four-pole stator design, which balances torque delivery, efficiency, and weight. This pole count is optimised for crawler applications where consistent mid-range torque is more valuable than peak RPM figures.
  • Low No-Load Current Draw — With just 4A of no-load current draw, this motor is efficient even when spinning without load. This efficiency means less wasted energy as heat and less demand on your ESC, allowing you to run higher-performance ESCs with smaller current ratings if desired, or to achieve longer battery run times when paired with moderate-rated ESC units.

Technical Performance

The Hobbywing XeRun AXE 4274 R3 1700KV Sensored Motor is a precision-engineered brushless unit measuring 42mm in outer diameter and 74mm in length, with a 5mm output shaft diameter that mates directly to standard crawler gearbox designs. At 405 grams, the motor carries moderate weight that won't upset the balance or handling of properly-designed 1/8th and 1/6th scale crawler platforms. The 1700KV rating means the motor will reach approximately 1700 revolutions per minute for every volt of battery supply, delivering strong mid-range torque characteristics that are ideal for technical rock-crawling, obstacle negotiation, and sustained climbing on steep gradients. When powered by a 6S LiPo battery (22.2 volts nominal), you're looking at theoretical maximum speeds in the region of 37,000 RPM before gearing, though in real-world crawler applications with typical 3:1 to 5:1 gear reduction, the motor operates in a much lower speed envelope where torque multiplication occurs. The sensored design eliminates the cogging sensation found in sensorless motors, providing smooth, linear throttle response that professional crawlers demand. The precision magnetic sensor feedback ensures that throttle commands are translated into instantaneous motor response, critical when piloting through tight technical sections. Built for use with the Hobbywing XeRun AXE PIUS R3 ESC, this motor and ESC combination forms a complete high-performance system, though the motor itself is compatible with any sensored brushless ESC featuring the appropriate connector configuration. The motor's 3-6S LiPo compatibility range gives builders flexibility to match battery configurations to their specific vehicle weight, gear ratios, and intended use case. The IP67 waterproofing means you can confidently operate the motor in challenging British weather conditions, whether that's damp moorland, muddy woodland courses, or wet concrete surfaces at indoor racing venues.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What makes the AXE R3 motor better than previous Hobbywing crawler motors? — The R3 generation delivers 106% more maximum output power than the previous R2 model while simultaneously improving efficiency by 11%. This means substantially better power delivery, improved hill-climbing performance, and longer run times from your battery pack. The enhanced precision magnetic sensor also provides feedback 60 times more accurate than traditional sensors, resulting in smoother, more predictable motor control during technical manoeuvres.
  • Is the AXE 4274 R3 suitable for beginner crawler builders? — Whilst this is a high-performance motor designed for serious crawlers, it's absolutely suitable for beginners who are building their first rock crawler. The sensored design actually makes it easier for inexperienced drivers to control, as the smooth power delivery and predictable throttle response make learning to pilot the vehicle more straightforward. You'll benefit from the advanced features as your skills develop, and the motor will grow with your abilities.
  • What battery does this motor need? — The AXE 4274 R3 1700KV accepts any 3-6S LiPo battery configuration. For example, you could run a 3S (11.1V), 4S (14.8V), 5S (18.5V), or 6S (22.2V) LiPo pack. A 4S configuration offers a good balance between power and efficiency for most crawlers, whilst 6S packs deliver maximum performance for heavily-geared vehicles. Always ensure your chosen ESC and battery are rated for the cell count you select.
  • Is this motor waterproof and suitable for wet conditions? — Yes, the AXE R3 carries an IP67 waterproof rating, meaning it's splash-proof, water-resistant, and dust-proof under normal operating conditions. You can confidently use this motor in wet UK weather, muddy terrain, and water crossings. However, IP67 protection is designed for splash and spray exposure during normal use, not for prolonged submersion. Extended underwater operation may eventually damage the motor, so whilst brief water crossings are fine, avoid leaving the motor submerged for extended periods.
  • What's the difference between the 1700KV and 2000KV versions? — The 1700KV motor (this model) delivers more torque and pulls a lower no-load current of 4A, making it ideal for heavier builds and maximum climbing ability. The 2000KV version produces higher maximum RPM and pulls 4.54A no-load current, offering slightly higher top speed at the expense of reduced torque multiplication. Choose 1700KV for technical rock-crawling and heavy vehicles, or 2000KV for vehicles prioritising speed and manoeuvrability.
  • What mounting holes does this motor have? — The motor comes equipped with four sets of 25.4mm standard mounting holes, which is the industry-standard spacing used by most modern 1/8th and 1/6th scale crawler chassis. The motor also features additional M3 and M4 threaded mounting points. If your chassis has 30mm spacing instead, you'll need to purchase the optional AXE 4274 Motor Conversion Adapter (part 30850501) separately, which allows the 25.4mm motor to mount into 30mm spaced frames.
  • Can I use this motor with my existing ESC and battery setup? — The AXE 4274 R3 is a sensored motor requiring a sensored brushless ESC. It won't work with sensorless ESCs or with brushed motor controllers. The motor is compatible with any sensored ESC rated for the appropriate LiPo cell count you plan to use. Hobbywing recommends pairing it with the XeRun AXE PIUS R3 ESC for optimal performance, but other high-quality sensored ESC units from respected manufacturers will work equally well as long as the connector types match.
  • How much does this motor weigh and will it affect my vehicle balance? — The motor weighs 405 grams, which is moderate for a high-performance 1/8th/1/6th scale unit. Proper chassis design ensures the motor is positioned to maintain vehicle balance, and the relatively compact dimensions (42mm diameter, 74mm length) mean it fits neatly into standard crawler transmission housings without requiring major design compromises.
