Overview

The Hobbywing SeaKing 160A V4 Brushless Speed Control is a professional-grade electronic speed controller (ESC) designed specifically for high-performance RC boats up to 120cm in length. This waterproof brushless ESC represents the pinnacle of modern RC boat electronics, combining cutting-edge features with proven reliability that appeals to both competitive racers and serious hobbyists throughout the UK and beyond. Whether you're piloting a dedicated racing catamaran, a scale model yacht, or a high-speed electric boat basher, the SeaKing 160A V4 delivers the explosive power and precise control needed to dominate on water.

Building on the success of its predecessor, the SeaKing 160A V4 introduces a refined, sleeker design that is 15% narrower than the previous SEAKING 180A V3 model, making it easier to install in boats with tight engine compartments and confined spaces. The compact dimensions of just 91x41x25.5mm mean you'll save valuable onboard real estate without sacrificing any performance capability. This makes it an ideal choice for RC boat enthusiasts in the UK who demand both form and function in their builds.

What truly sets the SeaKing 160A V4 apart is its comprehensive feature set: built-in Bluetooth connectivity for wireless parameter adjustment via mobile app, dual-channel water cooling for temperature management, IP67 waterproof certification for genuine all-weather operation, and 11 programmable parameters to fine-tune behaviour to your exact specifications. This is not just an ESC—it's an intelligent propulsion controller designed for the modern RC boating community.

Key Features

  • 160A Continuous Current with 800A Peak Output — The SeaKing 160A V4 can handle continuous discharge of 160 amps and peak bursts of up to 800 amps, providing the explosive power needed for aggressive acceleration and sustained high-speed runs. This exceptional current capacity means you can pair it with large brushless motors without worrying about performance throttling, making it suitable for demanding applications like RC racing boats and high-performance scale models.
  • Support for 3-8S LiPo Battery Compatibility — With input voltage support ranging from 3S to 8S LiPo batteries, the SeaKing 160A V4 offers exceptional flexibility in power configuration. Whether you choose to run lighter 3-4S setups for casual cruising or aggressive 6-8S configurations for competitive racing, this ESC adapts seamlessly to your chosen battery voltage, making it a future-proof investment as your RC boating needs evolve.
  • Dual-Channel Water Cooling System — The integrated dual-channel water cooling architecture actively dissipates heat through contact with cooling fluid, ensuring the ESC remains within safe operating temperatures even during extended high-performance runs. This advanced cooling approach allows the controller to maintain peak performance without thermal throttling, keeping your boat on the water longer and performing at maximum capability.
  • IP67 Fully Waterproof Design — With an IP67 protection rating certified to international standards (IEC 60529) and domestic standards (GB/T 4208-2017), this ESC boasts outstanding waterproof and dustproof capabilities that allow splash protection, submersion in shallow water, and protection against dust ingress. You can deploy this controller immediately without any additional waterproofing treatment, though the protection may decrease gradually with wear and aging under constant use.
  • Built-in Bluetooth Module for Wireless Configuration — The integrated Bluetooth connectivity allows you to connect directly to the HobbyWing mobile app from up to approximately 5 metres away for parameter settings, real-time data reading, firmware upgrades, and historical data analysis—all without requiring additional programming devices or cables. This user-friendly approach transforms parameter management from a technical chore into an intuitive wireless process, perfect for racers who need quick mid-session adjustments.
  • Intelligent Data Logging and Performance Monitoring — Real-time data recording captures extreme values, live telemetry, and builds historical graphs showing your ESC's performance profile over time. This comprehensive data visibility helps you optimise settings, diagnose issues, and track improvements across multiple sessions, giving competitive racers the intelligence needed to extract maximum performance.
  • Super Built-in BEC with Switchable Voltage Output — The integrated Battery Elimination Circuit (BEC) delivers up to 8 amps continuous current and 25 amps instantaneous current, with selectable output voltages of 6.0V, 7.4V, or 8.4V to power servos and onboard systems. This flexibility lets you drive powerful standard servos or high-voltage servo options without requiring separate BEC modules, simplifying your electrical architecture.
  • Freewheeling Function for Enhanced Handling — When enabled, the freewheeling function allows your boat to decelerate faster when throttle is released, improving cornering control and overall handling response. The system also reduces ESC temperatures during freewheeling operation, meaning you can maintain aggressive driving styles without thermal concerns. Disabling freewheeling produces slower deceleration for more gradual speed reduction.
  • AUX External Control Channel for Real-time Parameter Adjustment — By connecting the yellow signal wire to an unused receiver channel, you can adjust critical ESC parameters like reverse thrust directly from your transmitter in real-time without stopping to reprogram. This convenient feature dramatically improves race-day flexibility and allows mid-session tactical adjustments without breaking your rhythm.
  • Capacitor Overheating Protection — Intelligent protection circuitry guards against damage caused by capacitor failure due to overloading, safeguarding the entire ESC against catastrophic failure and extending operational lifespan even under extreme conditions.
  • 11 Programmable Parameters for Competitive Racing — The SeaKing 160A V4 offers a comprehensive suite of 11 customisable parameters specifically designed to meet the demands of competitive RC boat racing, providing far more detailed and extensive adjustment options than basic ESC models. This depth of configurability allows you to dial in perfect behaviour characteristics for your specific boat platform and racing conditions.
  • Sleek Compact Design for Easy Installation — The elongated, narrower form factor measuring just 91x41x25.5mm is 7mm slimmer than predecessor models, fitting easily into confined spaces within boat hulls and engine compartments. This streamlined profile enhances installation convenience and offers greater adaptability for both professional racing applications and recreational builds.

Technical Performance

The Hobbywing SeaKing 160A V4 represents a significant engineering achievement in brushless RC boat electronics. As a sensorless brushless speed controller, it operates without shaft sensors, relying instead on advanced back-EMF detection to commutate the brushless motor with precision and responsiveness. The 160-amp continuous current rating with 800-amp peak capability provides the thermal and electrical capacity for large displacement brushless motors whilst maintaining reliability during sustained high-performance operation. The dual-channel water cooling system directly addresses one of the primary failure modes in RC boat electronics—thermal stress—by actively dissipating generated heat through contact with your cooling fluid, a feature found only in premium-tier controllers. Input voltage flexibility spanning 3-8S LiPo chemistry ensures compatibility with virtually any modern battery configuration, from modest 3S setups delivering around 11.1 volts through to aggressive 8S systems providing 29.6 volts. The integrated BEC generates clean, regulated 6V, 7.4V, or 8.4V output selectable via software, capable of supplying 8 amps continuously or 25 amps instantaneously to power servos and receiver systems. All connections utilise marine-grade connectors and heavy-gauge wiring—10AWG red and black input leads measuring 160mm for battery connection, and three 12AWG black output wires of 150mm length terminated with 6.5mm gold female plugs for motor connection—ensuring excellent conductivity and minimal voltage drop even during maximum current draw. The entire assembly weighs just 220 grams including connectors and output plugs, maintaining a weight-conscious design critical for boat performance. The switch-mode BEC topology provides stable voltage regulation across varying input battery conditions and load scenarios. Advanced firmware enables freewheeling function, AUX channel control for real-time parameter adjustment, capacitor overheating protection, and optimised throttle linearity for precise, responsive control even during high-load applications. The brushless design inherently offers superior reliability, longer operational life, lower maintenance requirements, and better efficiency compared to brushed alternatives, making it the standard choice for serious RC boat racing throughout the UK and internationally.
