Overview

The Team Associated Edition Yokomo YZ-10 Classic Kit (AS9066) is a legendary 4WD competition race buggy that brings nearly five decades of racing heritage back to the track. This is a serious piece of RC engineering for anyone committed to 4WD racing. The partnership between Team Associated and Yokomo stretches back to 1972, but it was the early 1980s relationship with the groundbreaking YZ-10 that cemented both companies' status as trailblazers in RC car racing. If you're looking for a professional-grade RC buggy kit in the UK that combines state-of-the-art engineering with proven racing pedigree, the YZ-10 Classic is an exceptional choice.

This is not a ready-to-run RC car—it's a full kit that demands assembly expertise and a genuine passion for the sport. The YZ-10 was the 4WD competition race buggy of choice for Team Associated racers, and its legacy includes dominating performances at the 1989 and 1991 IFMAR Worlds championships. The 1991 victory with the revolutionary Yokomo Works '91 prototype, piloted by Cliff Lett, showcased innovations like 2mm fine pitch drive belts that would influence 4WD design for years to come. This modern re-release captures that same spirit of excellence whilst incorporating contemporary engineering principles that make it both competitive and serviceable.

Whether you're a seasoned RC competitor stepping up to 4WD racing or an experienced builder seeking an authentic classic platform with modern refinements, the YZ-10 Classic Kit represents the pinnacle of off-road RC buggy design. It's engineered to be not only the fastest but also the easiest to work on, allowing you to spend more time racing and less time troubleshooting. This is the choice for those who take their RC racing seriously.

Key Features

  • 4WD Belt Drive System — The highly efficient 2-belt 4WD drivetrain delivers smooth, reliable power distribution to all four wheels, essential for maintaining traction and control on competitive off-road tracks. The belt-driven system is recognised for its responsiveness and durability in racing applications.
  • Fluid-Filled Gear Differentials — Both front and rear differentials are fluid-filled, providing precise traction management and allowing the car to maintain speed through corners whilst managing wheel slip. This is a professional-grade feature that separates competition buggies from basic RC cars.
  • Slipper Clutch — The integrated slipper clutch protects the drivetrain from sudden acceleration spikes and impact damage, extending the life of expensive components and allowing for more aggressive driving without mechanical failure.
  • Universal Drive Shafts — Precision-engineered universal drive shafts throughout the drivetrain ensure smooth power delivery and accommodate suspension articulation without binding, critical for performance racing.
  • Adjustable Servo Saver with Spring Loading — The spring-loaded servo saver absorbs impact forces and sudden steering inputs, protecting your steering servo from damage whilst maintaining responsive steering control. Three servo horns are included for fine-tuning steering geometry.
  • Floating Servo Mount — The isolated servo mounting system decouples steering inputs from chassis vibration, improving precision and reducing servo wear during intense racing sessions.
  • Fully Adjustable Coilover Oil-Dampened Shocks — Front and rear suspension features threaded shocks with oil damping for complete adjustability. This allows you to tune suspension stiffness to match track conditions and your driving style, from hard-packed clay to loamy off-road surfaces.
  • Adjustable Front Track Width — The gear differential and front end design allow you to adjust track width, enabling fine-tuning of steering response and handling characteristics for different track layouts.
  • Anti-Roll Bar (Sway Bar) — The included anti-roll bar reduces body roll during cornering, improving stability and allowing faster turns without tipping, a critical feature for competitive 4WD racing.
  • Gold Aluminium Chassis — The lightweight yet rigid aluminium chassis is precision-machined and provides an excellent foundation for all components. Aluminium construction keeps weight down whilst maintaining the structural integrity needed for racing impacts.
  • Aluminium Bulkhead, Motor Mount, Rear Hubs and Steering Knuckles — Extensive use of aluminium throughout the front and rear ends reduces unsprung weight, improves handling response and provides excellent durability for repeated impacts and hard cornering.
  • Metric Hardware Throughout — All fasteners use metric sizing, making it easier to find replacement parts and maintain consistency with modern tools and spare part inventories.
  • Ball Bearings Throughout — Precision ball bearings in all rotating components reduce friction and heat generation, improving efficiency and allowing the car to maintain speed and control even in extended racing sessions.
  • Protect IV Body with Separate Under Pan — The realistic-looking Protect IV body design is dyeable in white, allowing you to create custom paint schemes. The separate under pan keeps mud, grass and debris from accumulating inside the chassis, reducing weight and improving handling consistency.
  • Functional Air Scoop — The body includes an operational air scoop that directs cooling air over the motor, allowing you to push motor power higher without thermal issues during intense racing.
  • Saddle Mount Battery Pack Layout — The battery is positioned in a saddle mount configuration low in the chassis, providing optimal weight distribution and centre of gravity for improved handling and stability.
  • Battery Box for Shorty LiPo — A dedicated battery box is included for shorty format 2S LiPo batteries, the modern standard for 1/10 scale electric RC racing. This allows flexible battery choice and easy swaps between racing sessions.
  • Original Studded Tyres — The classic high-traction, low-profile studded tyres provide grip on a wide variety of off-road surfaces, from slippery grass to hard clay, with the tread pattern optimised for race-track handling.
  • Chassis Protector — The included skid plate protects the aluminium chassis from rock strikes and impact damage during racing, extending the life of your investment.
  • 21-Tooth Pinion Gear Included — A 21-tooth pinion gear is supplied in the kit, providing a baseline gearing setup suitable for most track conditions. Additional pinions allow you to adjust top speed and acceleration for different racing scenarios.
  • G10 Chassis Material — Where applicable, G10 composite materials are used for their excellent strength-to-weight ratio and durability in high-impact racing environments.

Technical Performance

The Team Associated Edition Yokomo YZ-10 Classic Kit represents competition-grade engineering throughout. This 1/10 scale off-road buggy measures 395mm in length, 235mm in width and 190mm in height, with a wheelbase of 273.5mm, providing a balanced platform suitable for most off-road racing venues. The 4WD belt-drive system is engineered for maximum power transfer efficiency, with the dual-belt design ensuring smooth acceleration and predictable handling characteristics. The fluid-filled gear differentials at both front and rear axles work in concert with the slipper clutch to manage traction intelligently—when one wheel loses grip, the differential allows it to slip whilst maintaining power to wheels with traction, essential for maintaining speed through technical sections of the track. The fully adjustable oil-dampened coilover shocks front and rear allow you to dial in the perfect suspension setup for your specific track conditions and driving style. The golden anodised aluminium chassis, bulkheads, motor mounts, rear hubs and steering knuckles provide exceptional rigidity whilst keeping unsprung weight minimal, improving suspension responsiveness and overall handling. Ball bearings throughout the drivetrain and suspension components reduce friction losses, allowing more of your motor's power to translate into forward motion. The car accepts standard 1/10 scale 540-size electric motors and requires a 2S shorty LiPo battery, the modern racing standard for this class. You'll need a quality electronic speed controller (ESC) rated for 1/10 scale buggies, a 2-channel radio system with surface transmitter, and a steering servo to complete the build. The white dyeable plastic body allows you to create custom paint schemes matching your team colours or personal preference. Construction is unassembled—you'll need RC car building skills, basic tools and several hours to complete the kit properly.
