Key Features

  • Extreme Torque Output at Standard Voltages — Delivering 32 kilograms of torque at 6.0 volts and 28 kilograms at 4.8 volts, this servo generates exceptional mechanical force without requiring high-voltage power systems, making it compatible with standard battery configurations used across most RC setups in the UK market. This torque rating translates to 444.4 ounces-inches at 6 volts, providing the power needed for heavy-duty control surfaces and demanding mechanical loads.
  • Rapid Response Speed — With a lightning-quick 0.14 seconds per 60-degree rotation at 6 volts and 0.18 seconds at 4.8 volts, this servo delivers the responsiveness required for precise aircraft control and dynamic driving manoeuvres. Fast servo speed is absolutely essential for 3D flying, jet models, and any application where precise, immediate control response is non-negotiable.
  • Coreless Motor Design — The coreless motor technology provides several distinct advantages including reduced weight, improved efficiency, and better power-to-size ratio compared to conventional motor designs. Coreless motors generate less mechanical noise and vibration, contributing to smoother operation and more refined control feel across your RC application.
  • High-Strength Steel Gears — Unique steel gear construction ensures exceptional durability and resistance to wear, even under extreme loads and extended use. Steel gears are specifically chosen for their superior strength compared to plastic alternatives, making them ideal for applications like monster trucks and crawlers where sustained high-torque demands will degrade lesser materials. These gears are engineered to minimise backlash, a critical consideration for precision aircraft applications.
  • Minimised Backlash Design — Backlash—the slight delay or movement lost between input and output—has been specifically engineered to be minimal throughout the servo's movement range. This is absolutely essential for aircraft use where precise control inputs must translate immediately into exact surface movements, but this advantage extends equally to off-road driving where responsive steering input significantly improves handling and control. The reduction in backlash improves accuracy, repeatability, and overall controllability across every RC application.
  • Aluminium Case Construction — The servo housing utilises full aluminium construction, which provides superior thermal management by conducting heat away from internal components more effectively than plastic alternatives. This cooler operating temperature extends servo lifespan, maintains consistent performance under load, and reduces the risk of thermal shutdown during demanding use. The slightly taller case design optimises internal component arrangement for improved durability and performance.
  • Soft Start Mode Compatibility — The Plus "+" designation indicates this servo features Soft Start Mode, which gradually ramps up to full speed rather than applying maximum power instantly. This protects mechanical components from shock loads, extends servo lifespan, reduces electrical stress on battery systems, and prevents sudden jerky movements that could destabilise your aircraft or vehicle during startup sequences.
  • Sanwa SSR Compatibility — This servo integrates seamlessly with Sanwa SSR radio systems, expanding compatibility options for builders using Japanese radio systems. This compatibility ensures you can utilise this servo across multiple builds regardless of which radio control system you've invested in.
  • Professional-Grade Accessories Included — Larger, longer servo horns and aircraft rubber mounting hardware are supplied as standard, specifically engineered to address the needs of large-scale model builders. The rubber isolators reduce vibration transmission, whilst the extended horn options provide additional control leverage for large control surfaces.
  • Wide Operating Temperature Range — Operating safely between -10°C and 50°C (-14°F to 122°F), this servo functions reliably across UK climate conditions and in both indoor and outdoor flying environments, making it suitable for year-round use without thermal concerns.
  • Dual Ball Bearing Construction — Two precision ball bearings support the output shaft, reducing friction and enabling the smooth, precise movement essential for both fast aerial manoeuvres and fine crawling adjustments.

Technical Performance

The Savox SA1231SG+ represents a carefully engineered balance of raw power and refined control that distinguishes it within the competitive servo market. At its core operates a coreless digital motor, a technology choice that delivers measurable performance advantages over conventional motor designs. The coreless architecture eliminates the heavy iron core found in standard motors, reducing rotational mass and enabling faster acceleration of the output shaft. This contributes directly to the servo's impressive 0.14-second speed specification at 6-volt operation, delivering response times that serious RC pilots and drivers have come to expect from high-performance equipment.

The torque delivery is equally impressive—32 kilograms (444.4 ounces-inches) at standard 6-volt operation provides substantial mechanical force for large control surfaces, heavy aircraft components, and demanding off-road driving scenarios. This torque specification is achieved without requiring high-voltage liPo packs or specialised power systems, making the servo practical and accessible for builders who prefer conventional 4.8-volt and 6-volt battery configurations. The stall current specification of 5,300 milliamps at 6 volts indicates this servo can deliver sustained high-power output under loaded conditions, with a running current of 250 milliamps at 6 volts under no-load operation.

Build quality reflects Savox's reputation for durability and longevity. The full aluminium case provides structural rigidity and superior thermal management compared to plastic housings. The unique steel gears represent a significant material choice—far more durable than plastic alternatives—ensuring consistent performance across thousands of operating cycles. Steel gear construction is particularly important for demanding applications like monster truck racing and rock crawling, where sustained high-torque loads would quickly degrade plastic components. The two ball bearings supporting the output shaft enable smooth, low-friction rotation essential for both rapid servo speed and precise control feel.

Operating specifications have been carefully matched to the needs of serious RC builders. The servo accepts a standard 1,000 to 2,000 microsecond pulse width range for normal operation, with capability to extend to approximately 900 to 2,100 microseconds for maximum travel. The neutral position is precisely positioned at 1,500 microseconds, and the refresh rate of 333 Hz ensures smooth, responsive servo tracking regardless of radio system used. The 40.3 × 20.2 × 44.9 millimetre dimensions place this servo in the standard large-scale aircraft category, whilst the 79-gram weight remains reasonable for aircraft integration. The 25-tooth spline output shaft accommodates the supplied professional-grade horns and accepts a wide range of third-party accessories.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What voltage should I use to power this servo? — This servo operates across a wide voltage range from 4.8 volts up to 6.0 volts. At 6.0 volts, you'll achieve the maximum torque specification of 32 kilograms and the fastest speed of 0.14 seconds per 60 degrees. At 4.8 volts, torque reduces to 28 kilograms with speed of 0.18 seconds. Most standard four-cell NiMH receiver packs deliver approximately 4.8 volts, whilst 2S liPo packs provide 7.4 nominal volts but must be regulated down to 6 volts through a proper BEC regulator to avoid damaging this servo.
  • Is this servo suitable for 3D aerobatics and precision flying? — Absolutely. The servo has been specifically engineered for aircraft use with minimised backlash design, providing the precision control response that 3D flying demands. The fast speed of 0.14 seconds ensures rapid surface movement for dynamic manoeuvres, whilst the steel gears and high-grade construction provide reliability for extended flying sessions. Larger aircraft especially benefit from the 32-kilogram torque output for large control surfaces.
  • Can this servo handle monster truck and rock crawling use? — Yes, this servo excels in these demanding applications. The substantial 32-kilogram torque output powers large steering systems even under the extreme loads encountered during rock crawling, whilst the steel gears withstand the sustained high-torque punishment that plastic gears cannot. The minimised backlash improves steering response and handling precision, making it excellent for both high-speed bashing and technical crawling.
  • What makes the Plus "+" version different from standard SA1231SG servos? — The "Plus" designation indicates this servo includes Soft Start Mode, which gradually applies power rather than delivering instant full force, protecting components from shock loads and extending servo lifespan. It also includes Sanwa SSR radio system compatibility, providing expanded integration options for builders using Japanese radio equipment. These enhancements make the Plus version more versatile across different RC setups.
  • How does the coreless motor compare to conventional motor designs? — Coreless motors eliminate the heavy iron core found in standard motors, reducing rotational mass and enabling faster acceleration of the output shaft. This contributes to faster servo speed and more responsive operation. Coreless designs also generate less mechanical noise and vibration, providing smoother, more refined control feel. The trade-off is that coreless motors may produce slightly higher running current under load compared to iron-core designs, but the Savox engineering optimises this effectively.
  • What is the purpose of the rubber mounting hardware included? — The aircraft rubber isolators reduce vibration transmission from the servo to the airframe structure. This isolation prevents servo vibration from being transmitted throughout your model, improving overall stability, reducing vibration-induced flutter, and protecting control surfaces from vibration-related fatigue. This is especially important in high-performance aircraft where vibration management is critical to safe flight.
  • Can I use this servo on both aircraft and vehicles? — Yes, this servo's versatility makes it suitable for large-scale aircraft, monster trucks, crawlers, and other demanding applications. The high torque output addresses heavy loads on vehicles, whilst the minimised backlash and precise engineering satisfy aircraft requirements. Many serious RC enthusiasts keep several of these servos in their spares inventory due to their proven reliability across diverse applications.
  • What is the warranty coverage on this servo? — Savox provides a comprehensive 1-year warranty covering manufacturing defects and design faults, provided the servo has been used according to manufacturer specifications and recommendations. This warranty demonstrates Savox's confidence in their engineering and provides you with consumer protection on your investment.
  • Is the 79-gram weight appropriate for my aircraft? — At 79 grams, this servo sits in the medium-to-heavy category for aircraft servos. This weight is entirely appropriate for large-scale aircraft where proportional heft is necessary to handle the loads of large control surfaces. For smaller aircraft or weight-critical applications, lighter servo options may be more suitable. Always verify that your aircraft design accommodates the total servo system weight including the combined weight of multiple servos.
  • How does minimised backlash improve control feel? — Backlash is the slight delay or lost movement that occurs between the moment you move your transmitter stick and when the control surface actually begins moving. By engineering backlash to be minimal, this servo translates your control inputs into immediate, precise surface movement with negligible delay. This responsiveness is absolutely essential for aircraft control, where delayed response can compromise stability, and equally valuable for precise steering control in crawling applications.
