Overview

The MIP Bypass1™ Pistons represent a significant advancement in RC shock tuning technology for the 1/8th scale Kyosho MP9/MP10. These fully customisable pistons are an essential upgrade for anyone serious about optimising their RC car's suspension performance. Whether you're competing in UK RC racing events or pushing your vehicle to its limits on challenging terrain, the Bypass1™ technology delivers the precision control and repeatable damping characteristics that separate winning setups from stock configurations.

MIP has engineered these pistons to be dyno-tuned and matched to the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) compression characteristics, meaning you get familiar baseline performance with unprecedented tunability. This makes them equally valuable for seasoned competitors and dedicated hobbyists looking to gain that extra edge. The colour-coded valve system allows you to adjust rebound speed independently and with remarkable precision, giving you control over how your shocks respond across different track conditions, from smooth surfaces to rough terrain.

Used by world-class racers including Adam Drake and Ryan Maifield, these MIP Bypass1™ pistons are manufactured 100% in the USA to the highest standards. The technology has proven itself on the competitive RC racing circuit and is increasingly becoming the standard in professional 1/8th scale racing throughout the UK and internationally.

Key Features

  • Colour-Coded Valve System — The MIP Color Coded Valves™ system allows you to identify and select different valve thicknesses to control your shock rebound speed with precision. Thicker valves generate slower rebound whilst thinner valves produce quicker rebounds, giving you granular control over your vehicle's damping characteristics without changing oil weight or piston hole sizes.
  • Customisable Rebound Control — Instead of being locked into a single rebound curve, you can mix and match valve combinations to find the perfect setup for your driving style and track conditions. Stack multiple valves together for even finer tuning adjustments when standard single-valve selections aren't quite right.
  • Pre-Drilled for Easy Customisation — The pistons feature 1.2mm pre-drilled holes that can be easily drilled out to your preferred sizes. This allows you to adapt the pistons to match your existing setup quickly, whether you need 1.35mm holes or 1.50mm holes, giving you additional tuning flexibility beyond the valve system.
  • Dyno-Tuned Compression Characteristics — MIP has dyno-tested these pistons extensively to ensure they match the stock piston compression feel. This means you're not fighting against unfamiliar baseline characteristics when you install them, allowing you to focus on fine-tuning rebound rather than relearning your suspension's compression response.
  • Precision Engineering — Every piston is precision-machined from bearing-grade materials, and every valve is precision-stamped to exact specifications. This manufacturing consistency ensures repeatable performance across the entire set and between replacement purchases.
  • Proven by Top Racers — The Bypass1™ technology has been validated by world-champion RC racers who demand uncompromising performance. Their testimonials confirm that the suspension tunability and vehicle responsiveness improvements are significant enough to justify upgrading from stock pistons.
  • Enhanced Vehicle Responsiveness — By dialling in the correct rebound characteristics for your track and driving style, these pistons improve how quickly and predictably your RC car responds to inputs. This translates to better jumping, more confident landings, improved cornering grip, and superior rough-track efficiency.
  • Increased Stability and Predictability — Proper shock tuning using the Bypass1™ system creates more consistent vehicle behaviour across different sections of track. You'll experience more predictable suspension action, which builds driver confidence and allows you to push the vehicle harder with greater consistency.

Technical Performance

The MIP Bypass1™ Pistons are engineered specifically for 1/8th scale Kyosho MP9/MP10 buggies with 16mm shocks. The set includes four 6-hole 1.2mm pistons manufactured from precision-machined bearing-grade steel, ensuring they maintain their dimensional accuracy and performance characteristics through extended use. The accompanying valve system comprises multiple colours representing different thicknesses: .003" green (fast rebound), .005" blue (medium rebound), .007" clear (slow rebound), plus additional .010" brown (neutral) and .004" tan (gap) valve options for advanced tuning. Each piston cavity is engineered to work with these stackable valves, allowing infinite rebound tuning between the discrete valve sizes. The compression performance has been dyno-tested to ensure it matches the original MP9/MP10 stock piston response, meaning the piston cup area and bypass hole design deliver consistent compression damping whilst you tune the rebound independently through valve selection. Construction throughout is 100% USA-manufactured to exacting tolerances, ensuring reliability and consistency. The 1.2mm pre-drilled holes can be enlarged to 1.35mm, 1.50mm, or other sizes depending on your specific requirements, providing additional compression tuning capability beyond the valve system alone.

Tuning and Setup Information

MIP provides comprehensive first-time setup guidance to help you optimise these pistons for your specific vehicle and driving style. The recommended approach is to first drill out the pistons to match your current hole sizes, then use the same shock oil weight you've been running to establish a baseline. Start with one clear (.007") valve on top of each piston, both front and rear, then perform a bench test and drop test to verify the suspension pack matches your stock piston behaviour. From this baseline, adjust rebound using the .005" blue medium valve; if you find the suspension feels sluggish, drop to the .003" green fast valve, and if it feels too responsive, move up to .007" or consider stacking multiple valves. As a general rule, approximately .010" of valve thickness adjustment creates roughly a 1:1 ratio between rebound speed and compression feel. If the suspension still feels sluggish even with the .003" green valve, reduce your shock oil weight by 2.5 to 5.0 weight units rather than adding more valves. When stacking multiple valves, always place the lightest valve first, then layer thicker valves on top to avoid binding. This systematic approach allows you to dial in the perfect suspension response for your track conditions and driving preferences.

Valve Designation Guide

  • .003" Green — Fast Rebound Valve, used when you need quicker shock extension
  • .005" Blue — Medium Rebound Valve, the typical starting point for most setups
  • .007" Clear — Slow Rebound Valve, selected when you need to slow shock extension
  • .010" Brown — Neutral Valve, used for stacking to achieve approximately 1:1 rebound vs compression feel
  • .004" Tan — Gap Valve, employed for fine adjustments and advanced tuning scenarios

Why Choose MIP Bypass1 Technology?

The Bypass1™ system fundamentally changes how you approach suspension setup. Rather than being constrained by the piston design built into your shocks, you gain the ability to tune rebound speed independently of compression, oil weight, and piston hole size. This decoupling of damping characteristics means you can optimise your suspension without making trade-offs that affect other aspects of performance. The colour-coded valve system provides instant visual identification of which valve you're using, eliminating confusion and making your setup notes and adjustments reproducible between sessions. The stackable valve design means you're never locked into discrete tuning steps; you can create virtually unlimited intermediate positions by combining valves. Most importantly, the dyno-tuned compression ensures you're starting from a familiar baseline rather than fighting unfamiliar piston feel, so every adjustment you make moves you deliberately closer to your optimal setup rather than wandering in unfamiliar territory.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are MIP Bypass1 Pistons suitable for beginners? — Whilst these pistons are used by world-class racers, they're also excellent for dedicated hobbyists and intermediate drivers looking to improve their setup knowledge. The included first-time setup guide provides clear, step-by-step instructions for getting started. Beginners should start with the baseline .007" clear valve and progress to finer adjustments as they become more comfortable recognising how suspension tuning affects vehicle behaviour. The colour-coded system makes it much easier to track your changes compared to stock piston tuning.
  • What is the difference between MIP Bypass1 pistons and standard Kyosho MP9/MP10 stock pistons? — Stock pistons have fixed piston cup designs that cannot be tuned. Bypass1™ pistons allow you to adjust rebound speed by swapping colour-coded valves, and they include stackable valve options for infinite fine-tuning. The Bypass1™ system also preserves stock-equivalent compression characteristics whilst adding independent rebound control. Additionally, the 1.2mm pre-drilled holes can be enlarged for additional compression tuning, providing capabilities far beyond what stock pistons offer.
  • Will these pistons fit my Kyosho MP9 and MP10? — Yes, these pistons are engineered specifically for 1/8th scale Kyosho MP9/MP10 buggies with 16mm shocks. Compatibility is guaranteed for both the MP9 and MP10 platforms. Check that your shocks are the 16mm size (most standard MP9 and MP10 setups use 16mm shocks) before purchasing. If you're unsure of your shock size, measure your shock body diameter at the piston end.
  • How do I know which valve thickness to start with? — MIP recommends beginning with the .007" clear (slow rebound) valve on both front and rear pistons. After bench testing and drop testing to verify the suspension pack matches your stock piston baseline, switch to the .005" blue (medium rebound) valve and assess how the vehicle feels. If too sluggish, move to .003" green; if too quick, stack additional valves. This systematic progression ensures you find the optimal rebound speed for your specific track and driving style.
  • Can I stack valves for finer tuning? — Absolutely. Stacking multiple valves is one of the key advantages of the Bypass1™ system. When stacking, place the lightest valve first (e.g., .003" green), then layer thicker valves on top. This allows you to create intermediate rebound speeds beyond what single valves provide. Most setups will require stacking once you've exhausted the single-valve options and still need minor adjustments.
  • Do I need to change shock oil when using these pistons? — No. The Bypass1™ system is designed to work with your existing shock oil weight. Use the same oil you've been running in your stock pistons for the initial baseline setup. Only reduce oil weight by 2.5 to 5.0 wt if you find the suspension feels sluggish even with the lightest rebound valve (.003" green).
  • Can I drill the pistons to custom hole sizes? — Yes. The pistons come with 1.2mm pre-drilled holes, but they can be easily drilled out to your preferred sizes. For example, you could drill three holes to 1.35mm and three others to 1.50mm for asymmetrical compression tuning. This adds another layer of tunability beyond the valve system.
  • What makes these pistons different from other aftermarket options? — MIP Bypass1™ pistons are dyno-tuned to match OEM compression characteristics, meaning you're not adapting to an unfamiliar baseline. The colour-coded valve system is unique to MIP, making tuning intuitive and reproducible. The stackable valve design provides unlimited intermediate tuning steps, and the piston engineering itself is backed by testing from world-champion racers like Adam Drake and Ryan Maifield. Finally, they're manufactured 100% in the USA to precision standards, ensuring consistency and reliability.
