Overview
The eTronix Photon 80A Brushless Speed Control (ET1210) is a versatile electronic speed controller (ESC) designed for 1/10th scale RC car applications across the UK and beyond. This sensorless brushless ESC delivers impressive performance with 80A continuous current and an exceptional 480A burst current capability, making it an excellent choice for enthusiasts looking to upgrade their brushless RC car setup. Whether you're running a competitive race car or enjoying weekend bashing, the Photon 80A offers the reliability and performance that modern RC hobbyists demand.
Part of the eTronix Photon range, which includes systems spanning from 45A through to 120A, there is something within this product line for every 1/10th scale application you might consider. The Photon 80A strikes an excellent balance between power delivery and versatility, supporting both LiPo and NiMH/NiCd battery chemistries. This flexibility means you can run this ESC in your existing RC setup without needing to purchase all-new batteries, making it an attractive proposition for both newcomers to the RC hobby and experienced enthusiasts upgrading their brushless RC cars. The waterproof construction (when the optional cooling fan is not installed) provides additional peace of mind for outdoor use in variable UK weather conditions.
With the optional eTronix programmable set-up card (ET0449), users can fine-tune throttle response, braking behaviour, and other critical parameters to match their specific driving style and track conditions. This level of customisation elevates the Photon 80A beyond basic speed controllers, allowing you to extract maximum performance from your brushless motor and achieve that perfect driving characteristic.
Key Features
- 80A Continuous Current with 480A Burst Capability — This impressive power delivery ensures smooth acceleration and sustained performance under load, whilst the massive burst current provides instant throttle response when you need it most, giving you the competitive edge in RC racing or high-performance bashing.
- Waterproof Design (Without Fan Installation) — The sealed construction protects internal electronics from moisture and dirt, which is essential for RC enthusiasts in the UK who face damp conditions and varied weather. Simply don't install the optional cooling fan if you need full waterproof protection.
- Dual Battery Chemistry Support — Compatible with both 2-3S LiPo and 6-9S NiMH/NiCd battery packs, this flexibility means you can use whichever battery technology suits your needs, budget or existing inventory, making the Photon 80A a future-proof investment for your RC car.
- Integrated 3A 6.1V BEC Output — The onboard Battery Elimination Circuit (BEC) provides regulated power directly to your receiver and servos at 3A capacity and 6.1V output, eliminating the need for a separate battery pack and simplifying your vehicle's wiring harness significantly.
- Sensorless Brushless Motor Compatibility — The ESC is fully compatible with sensorless brushless motors, which are lighter, more efficient and require less maintenance than traditional brushed motors, delivering superior performance and reliability for modern 1/10th scale RC cars.
- Programmable Setup Card Support — Purchase the optional eTronix programmable set-up card (ET0449) to access advanced tuning options, allowing you to adjust throttle curves, brake force, timing advance and other parameters to perfectly match your driving preferences and vehicle characteristics.
- Compact, Lightweight Design — Weighing just 84g and measuring 51.5 x 38.5 x 38.5mm (without fan), the Photon 80A fits easily into most 1/10th scale RC car chassis without requiring major modifications to your vehicle layout.
Technical Performance
The eTronix Photon 80A Brushless Speed Control represents solid engineering at a competitive price point for the RC enthusiast market. Its impressive 80A continuous current rating makes it suitable for high-powered applications, whilst the 480A burst current capability delivers the instant torque and acceleration response that serious RC car drivers demand. The ESC supports motor sizes up to 3670 with specific limitations based on battery configuration: on 2S LiPo you can run motors rated up to 3000kV, whilst 3S LiPo systems are limited to 2500kV motors of the same size class. This ensures optimal performance and protects against over-current conditions that could damage your motor or ESC. The 3A, 6.1V BEC output is robust enough to power standard receiver and servo configurations typical of 1/10th scale RC cars, eliminating the need for additional power distribution systems. Battery compatibility spans 2-3S LiPo chemistry and 6-9S NiMH/NiCd packs, providing genuine flexibility for users with existing battery inventories. The waterproof construction (when the cooling fan is not installed) makes this ESC particularly attractive for UK RC enthusiasts who often encounter damp conditions and muddy terrain. Build quality is evident in the compact, well-organised PCB layout and the professional finish of the unit's casing, which should provide years of reliable service in competitive and recreational use alike.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the eTronix Photon 80A suitable for beginners to brushless RC cars? — Yes, absolutely. The Photon 80A is an excellent entry point into brushless RC car performance. It's straightforward to install in most 1/10th scale vehicles, the integrated BEC simplifies wiring, and it works with standard radio systems. The sensorless design requires no additional sensor wires, making installation cleaner than many alternatives. If you're upgrading from a brushed RC car, this ESC provides a significant performance step without the complexity of high-end competition controllers.
- What batteries do I need for the eTronix Photon 80A? — The Photon 80A supports two battery types: LiPo batteries in 2-3S configuration, or NiMH/NiCd rechargeable packs in 6-9S configuration. Most modern RC enthusiasts opt for 2S or 3S LiPo, which provide superior performance, lighter weight and better discharge characteristics. The choice between 2S and 3S LiPo will depend on your motor selection; ensure your motor's kV rating doesn't exceed 3000kV on 2S or 2500kV on 3S to maintain optimal performance and component longevity.
- Can I use this ESC for off-road RC cars and buggies? — Yes, the Photon 80A is designed for 1/10th scale applications including off-road buggies, short-course trucks, and other RC car types within this scale range. The waterproof construction (when no cooling fan is installed) makes it particularly suitable for muddy, wet off-road conditions common in the UK. Its compact size means it fits easily into most modern 1/10th chassis designs without requiring special modifications.
- How does the programmable set-up card enhance performance? — The optional eTronix programmable set-up card (ET0449) unlocks advanced customisation options that allow you to fine-tune throttle curves, adjust braking force, alter timing advance, and modify other critical parameters. This level of tuning capability means you can optimise the ESC's behaviour to match your specific motor characteristics, driving style and track conditions, potentially delivering faster lap times and more responsive handling than the default settings would provide.
- Is the Photon 80A waterproof? — The ESC is waterproof when the optional cooling fan is not installed. If you require active cooling via the fan for high-current, sustained applications, the waterproofing is compromised. For typical weekend bashing and recreational RC driving in the UK, the sealed design without a fan provides excellent protection against moisture and dirt ingress. For competition use or extended high-power sessions, you may need to consider cooling options and adjust your driving environment accordingly.
- What size motors are compatible with this ESC? — The Photon 80A supports brushless motors up to 3670 size. On 2S LiPo, motors can be rated up to 3000kV, whilst 3S LiPo systems accommodate motors rated up to 2500kV. These are common motor sizes for 1/10th scale RC racing and bashing, covering the vast majority of modern brushless setups on the market. Always verify your motor's specifications before purchase to ensure compatibility with your chosen battery configuration.
