Key Features
- Sensorless Brushless Motor (11.0R 3450KV) — The 3450KV brushless motor delivers responsive acceleration and smooth power delivery without the complexity of a sensor-based system, making it ideal for drivers who want reliable performance without additional setup hassles. The 11.0R resistance rating provides a balanced power profile suitable for a wide range of 1/10-scale vehicles.
- Waterproof 60A ESC — Rated for continuous current draw of up to 60A with burst capability reaching 360A, this waterproof electronic speed controller protects your investment from moisture and splash whilst delivering the power your brushless motor needs. The waterproof construction means you can tackle wet grass, muddy tracks, and damp conditions with confidence.
- 2S-3S LiPo or 5-10 Cell NiMH/NiCd Battery Compatibility — The Photon 3.0 works with a wide range of battery chemistries and cell counts, giving you flexibility to choose the power source that best suits your budget and performance needs. Whether you prefer lightweight LiPo packs or reliable NiMH cells, this ESC adapts to your setup.
- 6V/3A BEC Output — The onboard Battery Elimination Circuit provides clean, regulated power directly to your receiver and servos, eliminating the need for a separate battery for radio components. This simplifies wiring, reduces weight, and ensures your receiver and servos operate at optimal voltage.
- Programmable Setup Card (ET0106) with Sixteen Adjustable Parameters — Rather than relying on soldered jumpers or complex firmware menus, the Photon 3.0 uses an intuitive setup card system that allows you to adjust throttle response, brake characteristics, neutral range, motor direction, and running modes with ease. This makes fine-tuning your ESC performance straightforward and user-friendly.
- Throttle Response Adjustment (1-3ms) — Control how quickly your motor responds to throttle input by adjusting the response time from a snappy 1ms for instant acceleration to a more gradual 3ms for smoother, more modulated control. This parameter directly influences how aggressive or refined your acceleration feels.
- Coast Function with Variable Strength (Off, 10-30) — Enable coasting to allow your RC car to maintain momentum and glide to a stop naturally when you release the throttle, rather than braking immediately. This feature is essential for smooth, realistic driving and helps preserve your tyres during long sessions.
- Neutral Range Control (5-12%) — Adjust the dead zone around the neutral throttle position to prevent accidental movement or to create a larger buffer before the motor engages. A wider neutral range is particularly useful for beginners or if you're using a receiver with limited precision.
- Minimum Throttle Adjustment (5-16%) — Fine-tune the initial punch when you begin accelerating by setting the minimum throttle force. A higher value delivers more aggressive initial acceleration, whilst a lower setting provides gentler, more controlled takeoff.
- Maximum Forward and Reverse Force Control (40-100%) — Limit your top speed in forward and reverse directions independently, allowing you to match your RC car's performance to your driving skill level, track conditions, or battery voltage. This is particularly useful for training or when breaking in new components.
- Brake Response Customisation (0.1-3ms) — Control how quickly braking force is applied to the motor by adjusting the response time. Shorter response times deliver snappier, more immediate braking, whilst longer times create a smoother, more progressive brake feel.
- Brake Force Control (Minimum 15-50%, Maximum 50-100%) — Set both the initial brake force and maximum braking capability independently, allowing you to dial in everything from gentle, feathered braking to aggressive maximum stopping power. You can even disable braking entirely if preferred.
- Drag Brake Force in Forward and Reverse (Off, 20-100%) — Apply braking force when the throttle is centred (neutral position) in either forward or reverse mode. This prevents your RC car from creeping when you release the throttle and helps maintain precise stopping positions.
- Motor Rotation Control (CW/CCW) — Easily reverse motor rotation direction without rewiring, allowing you to compensate for different mounting orientations or to match your preferred vehicle configuration. This is invaluable when retrofitting into existing builds.
- Multiple Running Modes — Select from three different operating modes: Forward/Brake only, Forward/Brake/Reverse with selectable one-shot or two-shot reverse, or Forward/Reverse without intermediate braking. Choose the mode that matches your driving preference and vehicle type.
- Automatic LiPo Cell Detection with Cut-Off Voltage Protection — When set to Auto mode, the ESC automatically detects your LiPo battery cell count (2S or 3S) on power-up and applies appropriate voltage cut-off protection to prevent over-discharging and damage. This intelligent protection extends battery lifespan significantly.
- Thermal Protection with Adjustable Temperature Thresholds (Off, 95°C, 105°C) — The ESC automatically reduces or stops power if internal temperature exceeds your chosen threshold, protecting the electronic components from heat damage during extended use. This is particularly important during competitive racing or in hot weather conditions.
- Compact Dimensions (48 x 38 x 32mm) — The space-efficient design allows easy integration into tight engine bays and compact chassis without requiring major modifications. At just 96 grams, it adds minimal weight to your RC car.
Technical Performance
The eTronix Photon 3.0 60A ESC paired with the 11.0R 3450KV brushless motor represents a carefully engineered system optimised for 1/10-scale off-road RC cars. The 60-amp continuous current rating with 360-amp burst capability ensures this combo can deliver the sustained power needed for fast acceleration and prolonged high-speed running without thermal throttling, whilst the 3450KV motor speed constant provides an excellent balance between top-end speed and low-end torque across 2S and 3S LiPo batteries or equivalent NiMH packs. The waterproof construction of the ESC is crucial for RC enthusiasts in the UK who frequently encounter damp grass, muddy terrain, and wet weather conditions. The sensorless design eliminates the need for sensor wiring, reducing complexity and potential failure points whilst maintaining smooth power delivery across the entire RPM range. The 6V/3A BEC output is more than sufficient to power a standard receiver and servo combination without requiring additional power systems. Measuring just 48 x 38 x 32 millimetres and weighing only 96 grams, the ESC integrates seamlessly into most 1/10-scale platforms without significant chassis modifications. The brushless motor's efficiency means you'll enjoy extended run times compared to brushed alternatives, whilst the waterproof electronics allow you to tackle wet conditions that would damage traditional non-sealed components. This combo excels in off-road racing scenarios, bashing sessions, and training environments where reliability and ease of setup are paramount.
