Technical Performance

The CR12 Overtrail represents sophisticated engineering packed into a diminutive 372mm length package that weighs just 1110 grams. The steel ladder frame chassis combined with metal 4-link suspension and fully adjustable threaded shocks creates a foundation for genuine trail-crawling performance, with the soft-compound tyres on scale 1.9 wheels providing the grip necessary to climb over rough terrain and obstacles. The compact Reedy brushed 380 motor delivers smooth, predictable power suitable for trail driving, working through a 13.98:1 gear ratio transmission that multiplies torque for excellent climbing ability. Power comes from the included 850mAh 7.4V 2-cell lithium-ion battery, which delivers sufficient runtime for extended driving sessions whilst maintaining consistent voltage delivery. The water-resistant Reedy Power speed control manages power delivery with precision, whilst the 16-piece ball bearing set throughout the drivetrain ensures all moving parts rotate smoothly with minimal friction loss. Metal front CVA shafts and rear solid shafts with 12mm hex adapters transmit power reliably even under extreme suspension articulation, whilst the plastic low-friction slider-type drive shafts reduce friction and heat generation. The chassis-mounted steering servo provides precise control response, and the entire package is engineered to S.O.R.R.C.A. specifications for recognised trail competition use. At just over 1.1 kilograms, the CR12 Overtrail achieves an impressive balance between structural rigidity for durability and light weight for improved articulation and climbing performance on technical terrain.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the TEAM ASSOCIATED CR12 Overtrail RTR suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. This ready to run RC car is ideal for beginners because it arrives completely assembled and configured—there's no building or soldering required. Simply charge the battery, install four AA batteries in the transmitter, and you're driving. The intuitive 2.4GHz XP radio system is easy to use, and the stable 4-link suspension makes it forgiving to drive. The brushed motor provides smooth, predictable power delivery that's easy to control, making it perfect for learning trail driving fundamentals without the frustration of managing complex electronics or dealing with kit assembly.
  • What battery does the CR12 Overtrail need? — The vehicle comes with an 850mAh 7.4V 2-cell lithium-ion battery and a charger included in the box, so you're ready to drive straight away. The transmitter requires four AA batteries, which are not included. If you want extended runtime or faster charging, the CR12 is compatible with other 7.4V 2-cell lithium-ion batteries with T-plug connectors, and larger capacity options like 1600mAh or 3000mAh 7.4V 2-cell lipos are available as optional upgrades.
  • How long does the battery last on a single charge? — Runtime depends on driving style and terrain, but the 850mAh 7.4V battery typically provides 15-20 minutes of continuous trail driving. This makes it perfect for extended sessions when you charge between runs or rotate multiple batteries. The lithium-ion chemistry provides consistent voltage throughout the charge cycle, meaning performance remains stable even as the battery depletes.
  • Is the CR12 Overtrail waterproof? — The Reedy Power electronic speed control features water-resistant design, protecting critical electronics from splashes and wet conditions encountered during wet-weather trail driving. However, it is not fully submersible, so avoid submerging the vehicle or driving through deep water. Light rain and wet grass are fine, and you can safely drive near water features and muddy terrain without concern.
  • Does the CR12 Overtrail come ready to drive out of the box? — Yes, it's truly ready to run. The vehicle arrives completely assembled with all electronics installed, configured, and tested. You only need to charge the included lithium-ion battery, install four AA batteries in the transmitter, and you can start driving immediately. There's no building, soldering, or programming required, making this an excellent choice for anyone who wants to start trail driving straight away.
  • What is the S.O.R.R.C.A. class 1 and 2 compliance? — S.O.R.R.C.A. (Society of Organised Rally, Racing and Crawling) defines standardised rules for scale RC vehicle classes. The CR12 Overtrail meets both class 1 and class 2 specifications straight from the box, meaning you can enter it into recognised competitions and events without modifications. This provides excellent validation of the authentic scale design and performance engineering.
  • How realistic are the scale details? — The CR12 Overtrail features authentic scale proportions with realistic wheels, soft-compound tyres, an off-road style body, and scale 1.9 wheels that are proportionally accurate to a 1:12 vehicle. The overall design aesthetic mimics real-world trail trucks, making it visually appealing whether you're driving recreationally or competing. The engineering beneath the bodywork is equally realistic—the 4-link suspension, threaded shocks, metal axle shafts, and ball bearing set all mirror real-world trail truck design principles.
  • What's the wheelbase and dimensions? — The CR12 Overtrail measures 372mm in length, 178mm in width, and features a 225mm wheelbase. At just 1110 grams, it's compact enough to handle confined spaces and technical terrain features, yet large enough to offer genuine articulation and realistic proportions. These dimensions make it perfect for garden trails, park driving, or more serious technical terrain without requiring enormous amounts of space.
  • Can I upgrade the motor or speed control? — The CR12 platform is designed around the included Reedy brushed 380 motor and electronics for optimal performance and reliability. Whilst the motor and ESC are integrated into the chassis design, you can upgrade the battery to larger capacity options, adjust suspension setup, or upgrade wheels and tyres. Optional parts and upgrades are available, and the modular design allows you to customise whilst maintaining the vehicle's core strengths.
  • How does the gear ratio affect performance? — The 13.98:1 gear ratio is specifically chosen for trail crawling, providing excellent torque multiplication that allows the motor to generate tremendous climbing force at low speeds. This ratio sacrifices top-end speed for low-speed control and obstacle-climbing ability—exactly what a trail truck needs. The 3-gear transmission adds flexibility, allowing you to select different gearing for different terrain conditions if desired.
