Overview

The Volantex Compass 650mm sailboat is the perfect entry point into the rewarding hobby of RC sailing. Whether you're discovering remote control boats for the first time or looking for an affordable ready to run RC sailboat that won't break the bank, the Compass delivers genuine sailing performance in a compact, manageable package. This RG65 class competition-designed sailboat combines traditional sailing authenticity with modern RC technology, making it an ideal choice for beginners and enthusiasts alike who want to experience the serene world of RC sailboating without the complexity of larger models.

The Compass comes an impressive 95% pre-built and pre-rigged, meaning you'll be on the water in less than five minutes. Don't let the modest 650mm size fool you—this is a serious RC sailing model with genuine competition credentials. Featuring a mini-sail winch servo, a reliable 2.4GHz marine radio system, and durably engineered blow-moulded ABS plastic hull construction, the Compass allows enthusiasts to easily and affordably enter this fascinating hobby. The small size provides multiple advantages: it's easy to transport, can be operated safely in relatively modest bodies of water such as ponds and small lakes, and requires minimal storage space at home.

If you're searching for an affordable entry-level RC sailboat, a ready to run RC model that requires minimal assembly, or simply want to explore competitive sailing in miniature, the Volantex Compass RTR sailboat is an excellent choice. It delivers authentic sailing dynamics, waterproof electronics protection, and genuine competition-class design in a beginner-friendly package.

Key Features

  • RG65 Class Competition Design — The Compass is engineered to 650mm class specifications, making it compatible with RG65 competitive sailing events and standards, so you're investing in a boat with genuine racing credentials even if you start as a casual sailor.
  • 95% Pre-Built and Ready to Run — Unlike many RC sailboats that require extensive assembly, the Compass arrives pre-rigged, pre-assembled and pre-configured with all major components already installed, meaning you only need to install batteries before launch.
  • Mini-Sail Winch Servo — The dedicated 3kg torque winch servo provides precise sail control, allowing you to adjust sail trim for optimal performance across different wind conditions and water situations.
  • 2.4GHz Marine Radio System — The modern 2.4GHz frequency eliminates interference issues common with older RC systems and provides reliable control in multi-boat scenarios, essential for competitive sailing events.
  • Blow-Moulded ABS Plastic Hull — The intricately-designed hull is manufactured from durable ABS plastic using blow-moulding techniques, delivering exceptional strength, smooth surface finishes, and the kind of durability required for regular water use.
  • Waterproof Electronics Design — All electrical components are engineered with water protection in mind, ensuring the 17-gram servo and receiver systems operate reliably even in splashing conditions typical of RC sailing.
  • Compact 650mm Dimensions — At just 65cm in length and 13.5cm in width, the Compass is small enough to transport easily, operate safely in modest bodies of water, and store conveniently without requiring specialist facilities.
  • Two-Channel Control System — The 2-channel radio system provides complete control over rudder steering and sail trim, delivering the essential control requirements for sailing without unnecessary complexity.
  • Lightweight at 1300 Grams — The 1.3kg weight keeps the model easy to handle, transport and launch, whilst maintaining the structural integrity needed for competitive performance.

Technical Performance

The Volantex Compass is engineered as a genuine competition-class RC sailboat within the RG65 specifications, combining authentic sailing dynamics with beginner-friendly operation. The hull measures precisely 650mm in length and 13.5cm in width, with an overall dry weight of 1300 grams, creating a perfectly balanced platform for learning and enjoying RC sailing. Construction utilises blow-moulded ABS plastic throughout the hull, a manufacturing process that delivers superior strength and durability compared to cheaper injection-moulded alternatives, whilst maintaining the smooth surface finishes necessary for efficient water movement. The servo arrangement includes a primary 17-gram standard servo for rudder control combined with a dedicated 3kg torque winch servo specifically engineered for precise sail trim adjustment—this dual-servo configuration is a hallmark of serious RC sailing models and allows sailors to optimally adjust sail angle across varying wind speeds and water conditions. The 2.4GHz marine radio system provides modern frequency-hopping technology that eliminates traditional interference problems, particularly important when operating multiple RC boats simultaneously or in environments with other wireless devices. Waterproof design elements protect all electrical systems from splash and spray, ensuring long operational life despite the inherently wet nature of sailing. The boat requires eight AA batteries total (four for the receiver in the boat, four for the transmitter controller), providing simple and economical power that's readily available from any supermarket or retailer across the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Volantex Compass suitable for complete beginners to RC sailing? — Yes, absolutely. The Compass is specifically designed as an entry-level model for sailboating enthusiasts new to the hobby. It arrives 95% pre-built, requiring only battery installation before launching, and the two-channel control system provides all necessary functions without overwhelming complexity. The manufacturer recommends a minimum age of 14 years, making it appropriate for teenagers and adults discovering RC sailing for the first time.
  • How long does it take to get this RC sailboat ready to sail? — The Compass can be ready to launch in less than five minutes. Since it arrives pre-rigged and pre-assembled with all major components installed, you simply need to insert the eight AA batteries (four in the boat receiver, four in the transmitter) and you're ready to head to the water.
  • What batteries does the Volantex Compass V791-1 need? — The boat requires 4 x AA batteries for the receiver installed in the hull, and the transmitter controller requires 4 x AA batteries, totalling 8 AA batteries. These are standard alkaline batteries available from any supermarket, shop or online retailer across the UK, making ongoing operation extremely economical.
  • Can I operate this sailboat in small bodies of water? — Yes, this is one of the primary advantages of the Compass. At just 650mm in length, it's specifically designed for operation in modest-sized water bodies including ponds, small lakes, and even larger garden pools. The compact dimensions make it perfect for locations where larger RC models would be impractical.
  • What does the 2.4GHz radio system provide compared to older RC sailboat frequencies? — The 2.4GHz frequency uses modern frequency-hopping technology that eliminates interference from other wireless devices and allows multiple RC boats to operate simultaneously without signal conflicts. This is essential for competitive sailing events and more reliable than older 27MHz and 40MHz systems still found in vintage RC boats.
  • Is assembly required for the Volantex Compass? — Minimal assembly is required. Whilst the boat is listed as requiring some assembly, this refers only to battery installation and possibly attaching the mast and boom if these arrive detached for shipping. All complex internal systems are pre-installed and pre-configured, making this a genuine ready-to-run experience rather than a kit requiring substantial construction.
  • What class is this sailboat designed for? — The Compass conforms to RG65 class specifications, meaning it's engineered to official competition standards for 650mm radio-controlled sailboats. This ensures authentic sailing dynamics and compatibility with competitive sailing events if you choose to progress to competitive sailing.
  • How much does the Compass weigh? — The complete sailboat weighs 1300 grams (1.3kg), making it light enough to transport easily, carry by hand, and launch from most accessible water locations without requiring specialised equipment or assistance.
