This high-performance rudder servo is specifically designed for helicopter enthusiasts flying 500, 600, and 700 class helis, delivering the speed and reliability needed for smooth, accurate directional control. Whether you're an experienced RC pilot in the UK or someone looking to upgrade your helicopter setup, this servo represents a significant step forward in response time and build quality. The combination of metal gearing, digital control, and an aluminium case makes this one of the most capable standard-size rudder servos available to RC enthusiasts today.

What sets the Savox SH1290MG+ apart from conventional servo options is its exceptional speed rating of just 0.048 seconds per 60 degrees at 6V, making it one of the fastest servos in its class. This lightning-fast response time is crucial for helicopter pilots who demand crisp, instantaneous control inputs without lag or delay. The servo features a coreless motor design combined with 4096 super high resolution, ensuring smooth, jitter-free operation even during aggressive manoeuvres. For RC hobbyists seeking a ready-to-install solution that doesn't compromise on performance, this Savox digital servo is an excellent choice for upgrading existing setups or building new high-specification helicopters.

Savox has built a reputation for delivering quality RC servos that balance speed with durability, and the SH1290MG+ is no exception. The water-resistant design with four silicon seals provides protection against moisture and contaminants, whilst the robust metal gear train ensures longevity even under continuous use. With dual ball bearing support for smooth rotation and an aluminium middle case that maintains cooler operating temperatures, this servo is built to perform reliably in challenging conditions. The new Soft Start Mode and Sanwa SSR compatibility featured in this Plus model variant add even greater versatility for modern RC helicopter builds.

Key Features

  • Coreless Motor Technology — The servo employs a coreless motor design that delivers exceptional speed and responsiveness, eliminating the lag associated with traditional motor designs. This innovation allows the servo to achieve its impressive 0.048-second response time, providing the instant directional control that helicopter pilots demand during fast-paced flying.
  • 4096 Super High Resolution — With 4096 levels of resolution, this digital servo provides incredibly precise position control and smooth operation. The high resolution eliminates jitter and micro-vibrations, resulting in buttery-smooth servo movements that translate directly into refined flight control and aesthetic performance during aerobatic flying.
  • Metal Gear Train with Dual Ball Bearing Support — The heavy-duty metal gears are specifically engineered for strength and longevity, whilst dual ball bearing support ensures smooth, friction-free rotation of the output shaft. This combination delivers the durability needed for sustained use in competitive flying or intense recreational sessions without premature wear.
  • Water-Resistant Design with Four Silicon Seals — The servo features four strategically placed silicon seals that protect internal components from water ingress and environmental contaminants. This makes the SH1290MG+ suitable for flying in various weather conditions, from dewy morning sessions to dusty outdoor locations across the UK.
  • Aluminium Case for Thermal Management — The part-aluminium construction allows excess heat to dissipate efficiently during extended flight sessions, maintaining optimal operating temperatures and preventing performance degradation. This thermal stability ensures consistent servo response throughout your flying day.
  • Digital Control with High Refresh Rate — Operating at a 333 Hz refresh rate, the servo's digital architecture provides superior command processing and faster reaction times compared to analogue servos. This means your control inputs are translated to physical servo movement with virtually no perceivable delay.
  • Soft Start Mode and Sanwa SSR Compatibility — As a new Plus model variant, this servo includes Soft Start Mode which reduces mechanical shock during power-up and initial movement. Additionally, it is fully compatible with Sanwa SSR systems, providing flexibility for integration with various radio equipment and control systems used by RC enthusiasts throughout the UK.
  • 25-Tooth Spline Output Gear — The standard 25-tooth output spline accepts a wide variety of servo horns available in the RC market, making it easy to mount and integrate into your helicopter configuration without requiring proprietary adapters or modifications.

Technical Performance

The Savox SH1290MG+ delivers exceptional technical performance across all measurable parameters. At its rated voltage of 6V, the servo produces 5.0kg of torque at 69.4oz-in, providing substantial force for controlling helicopter rotor blades even during aggressive manoeuvres and high-G aerobatic sequences. The headline specification is the incredible speed rating of 0.048 seconds per 60 degrees at 6V (with an alternative rating of 0.059 seconds at the lower 4.8V nominal), positioning this servo among the fastest standard-size rudder servos available for RC helicopter applications. The servo's construction combines a coreless motor with heavy-duty metal gearing, whilst the part-aluminium case facilitates heat dissipation during extended flight sessions. The servo measures a compact 40.3 x 20.2 x 37.2mm and weighs just 56.4g, making it perfectly suited for weight-sensitive helicopter applications where every gram matters for flight characteristics. Operating across a temperature range of -10°C to 50°C, the servo performs reliably in varied UK weather conditions. The 333 Hz refresh rate ensures rapid command processing, whilst the 4096 high-resolution digital servo system delivers smooth, precise positioning without the micro-vibrations associated with lower-resolution servo designs. The servo draws 200mA running current at 4.8V and 250mA at 6.0V under no-load conditions, with stall current ratings of 2400mA at 4.8V and 3000mA at 6.0V, allowing for proper power supply specification and battery selection. The servo's operating travel spans 100 degrees with a neutral position at 1520 microseconds, whilst maximum travel can reach approximately 154 degrees when using the full 800 to 2200 microsecond pulse width range, offering flexibility in control throw configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What voltage should I use for optimal performance? — The servo performs optimally at 6.0V, where it achieves its fastest speed of 0.048 seconds per 60 degrees and maximum torque of 5.0kg. It can operate safely at the lower 4.8V nominal voltage, where it produces 4.0kg of torque and 0.059-second response time. Most helicopter pilots run their servo systems at 6V using regulated BEC outputs from their battery systems to maximise performance.
  • Is this servo suitable for standard-size 500, 600, and 700 class helicopter applications? — Yes, the Savox SH1290MG+ is specifically engineered as an ideal rudder servo for these helicopter classes. Its compact dimensions, lightweight design at just 56.4g, and exceptional speed make it perfect for maintaining precise directional control in these popular RC helicopter categories.
  • How does the water-resistant design protect the servo? — The servo incorporates four silicon seals positioned at critical internal junctures to prevent water and moisture from entering the servo case and damaging the motor and gearing. This makes it suitable for flying in damp conditions or areas with light spray, though it is not fully submersible.
  • What is Soft Start Mode and why does it matter? — Soft Start Mode, featured in this Plus variant, reduces the mechanical shock that occurs when the servo first receives power and begins initial movement. This gentler power-up sequence reduces stress on internal components and helps prevent damage during the critical initialisation phase, extending the servo's operational lifespan.
  • Can I use this servo with Sanwa radio equipment? — Yes, the SH1290MG+ Plus variant is fully compatible with Sanwa SSR systems, allowing seamless integration with Sanwa radio transmitters and receivers used by many RC pilots throughout the UK.
  • What makes the metal gear train superior to plastic alternatives? — Metal gears offer significantly greater durability and load-bearing capacity compared to plastic gears. They resist wear from repeated stress cycles and maintain precise tolerances over extended periods, ensuring your servo delivers consistent performance throughout its operational lifetime rather than gradually losing responsiveness as plastic gears wear down.
  • How does the coreless motor contribute to overall performance? — Coreless motors are inherently faster and more responsive than cored motor designs because they eliminate the iron core's magnetic inertia. This allows the rotor to accelerate and decelerate more rapidly, delivering the exceptional 0.048-second response time that sets this servo apart from conventional alternatives.
  • What is the difference between 4.8V and 6.0V operation? — At 6.0V (typical for regulated BEC systems), the servo achieves maximum speed of 0.048 seconds per 60 degrees and maximum torque of 5.0kg. At 4.8V (suitable for some battery configurations), it operates slightly slower at 0.059 seconds and produces 4.0kg of torque. Most pilots prefer 6V operation for the enhanced response characteristics.
