Key Features

  • M1 Module Rating — The M1 module specification ensures compatibility with a wide range of RC platforms and drivetrain systems, allowing you to use this pinion gear across multiple vehicles in your collection without compatibility concerns.
  • 16 Tooth Configuration — The 16-tooth design provides a specific gear ratio that affects acceleration and top speed characteristics, making it suitable for balanced performance across various driving conditions and terrain types.
  • Steel Construction — Unlike plastic alternatives, the steel material offers superior durability and resistance to wear, meaning your gear will maintain precise tolerances and smooth meshing for far longer than composite options, reducing the frequency of replacements.
  • 5mm Shaft Bore — The 5mm bore accommodates standard RC motor shafts, ensuring straightforward installation and compatibility with most brushless and brushed motors commonly used in modern RC vehicles available in the UK market.
  • Precision Manufacturing — Fastrax components are manufactured to tight tolerances, ensuring consistent tooth geometry and smooth engagement with your spur gear, which translates to reduced vibration, quieter operation, and improved efficiency.

Technical Performance

The Fastrax M1 16T Steel Pinion Gear represents the engineering excellence expected from a trusted RC components manufacturer. The steel construction is significantly more durable than cheaper plastic alternatives, maintaining precise tooth geometry even under the demanding conditions of competitive racing or high-speed bashing. The M1 module rating is a standardised specification across the RC industry, ensuring this gear will mesh smoothly with compatible spur gears regardless of manufacturer. The 16-tooth count offers a balanced compromise between acceleration and top speed, making this pinion ideal for general-purpose driving without sacrificing either extreme. The 5mm shaft bore is the industry standard for a wide variety of RC motors, from entry-level brushed systems to high-performance brushless setups. Installation is straightforward — simply remove your worn pinion gear and press this new steel unit onto your motor shaft, securing it with the appropriate grub screw. The precision manufacturing means you can expect smooth, quiet operation with minimal backlash when properly installed, which contributes to improved overall drivetrain efficiency and reduced wear on other components in your transmission system.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is an M1 module pinion gear and why does it matter for my RC car? — The M1 module refers to a standardised tooth pitch used across the RC industry, ensuring compatibility with a wide variety of spur gears from multiple manufacturers. The module specification is critical because an incorrectly matched module will cause poor meshing, leading to noise, vibration, and accelerated wear of both the pinion and spur gear. By choosing an M1 gear, you're ensuring compatibility with the vast majority of RC setups available to UK enthusiasts.
  • How long does a steel pinion gear last compared to plastic? — Steel pinion gears typically last several times longer than plastic alternatives because steel maintains its hardness and precise tooth geometry under continuous use. Plastic gears wear faster, leading to increased backlash and eventual stripped teeth. If you drive frequently or run high-powered brushless motors, a steel pinion is a worthwhile investment that will reduce your replacement costs over time.
  • Is this compatible with my specific RC model? — The Fastrax M1 16T gear is designed as a replacement option part for numerous RC platforms including Element Enduro, HPI, Mugen, Rival MT10, Tamiya, Team Associated, Team Losi, Traxxas TRX-4, Axial Racing and other models using M1 module drivetrain components. Check your vehicle's manual or contact our expert team at RC Model Shop to confirm compatibility with your specific model before ordering.
  • What tools do I need to install this pinion gear? — Installation typically requires a motor shaft removal tool or press, a 5mm bore to match your motor shaft, and the appropriate grub screw for your motor type. Most RC enthusiasts have these basic tools in their workshop, though if you're new to the hobby, we recommend visiting our store in Walsall or contacting our team for installation guidance.
  • How do I know if my pinion gear needs replacing? — Signs that your pinion gear needs replacement include visible wear on the teeth, increased noise during acceleration, loss of top speed, or difficulty shifting between forward and reverse. If you notice these symptoms, it's time to upgrade to a fresh steel pinion like this Fastrax unit to restore your drivetrain's performance.
  • Can I use this on a high-powered brushless RC car? — Yes, the steel construction makes this gear ideal for high-powered brushless setups. In fact, if you're running a brushless motor, a quality steel pinion is essential because the increased torque and acceleration demands will wear plastic gears very quickly. This steel gear is designed to handle the performance characteristics of modern brushless RC vehicles available in the UK.
