Overview

The Traxxas Grey Aluminium Short Mini GTR Shock Body TRX10866-GRAY is a premium suspension upgrade component designed for serious RC enthusiasts looking to enhance their mini RC car's damping performance and durability. This genuine Traxxas replacement part brings professional-grade engineering to smaller-scale RC vehicles, making it an essential upgrade for anyone running a Traxxas Mini Rally VXL Ford RS200 or Mini Slash BL-2S 4X4 RTR short course truck. Whether you're a weekend basher or a competitive RC driver in the UK, this shock body represents a significant step up from standard plastic components, offering the kind of precision engineering that Traxxas is renowned for across all their RC models.

Traxxas has built its reputation on creating high-performance RC cars and trucks that can handle demanding conditions, and this grey-anodised aluminium shock body exemplifies that commitment to quality. As part of the acclaimed GTR shock system, this component is engineered to work seamlessly with Traxxas's suspension philosophy, which emphasises consistency, reliability and precise handling characteristics. The short mini GTR shock body format makes it ideal for compact RC models where weight and size matter, ensuring your mini RC truck maintains responsiveness and agility without sacrificing damping quality.

If you're serious about getting the best performance from your RC short course truck or mini rally car, upgrading from plastic to aluminium suspension components is one of the most impactful modifications you can make. This grey shock body is perfect for UK RC enthusiasts who want to match factory Traxxas performance standards or build a custom setup tailored to their driving style and track conditions.

Key Features

  • Grey-Anodised Aluminium Construction — The shock body is manufactured from high-quality aluminium with a professional grey anodised finish that provides corrosion resistance while looking fantastic on your RC car. Anodising creates a hard, protective oxide layer that prevents oxidation and extends the component's lifespan, especially important when racing in wet UK conditions.
  • PTFE Coating for Ultra-Smooth Damping — The PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) coating on the shock body creates an exceptionally slippery surface that dramatically reduces friction between the piston rod and shock bore. This coating is crucial for maintaining consistent damping performance throughout your entire driving session, as friction causes dampers to heat up and lose effectiveness over time.
  • TiN-Coated Shafts for Long Seal Life — The TiN (titanium nitride) coating on the shock shafts provides an incredibly hard, slippery surface that minimises wear on the internal seals. This means your shock will maintain perfect damping consistency for far longer than standard components, reducing the need for expensive rebuilds and keeping your RC car performing at peak level.
  • Threaded Aluminium Body for Precision Adjustments — Unlike many plastic shock bodies, this GTR shock features full threading that allows for precise spring preload adjustments. This means you can fine-tune your suspension's ride height and spring compression characteristics to match your specific driving style, track surface and weather conditions without needing to replace entire shock assemblies.
  • Screw-Secured Spring Perch Design — The spring perch is secured with screws rather than relying on friction-fit or snap designs, meaning the spring can never accidentally pop off mid-race. This safety feature is essential for maintaining vehicle stability during high-speed driving and aggressive cornering manoeuvres on any terrain.
  • Higher Oil Capacity for Improved Consistency — The GTR shock design holds more damping oil than standard ultra shocks, which means the fluid maintains more consistent temperature and viscosity throughout extended driving sessions. This directly translates to more predictable handling and better feedback to the driver, whether you're racing competitively or bashing for fun.
  • Short Mini Format for Compact Vehicles — This shock body is specifically designed for mini-scale RC vehicles, making it perfect for the Traxxas Mini Rally and Mini Slash ranges. The compact dimensions ensure proper fitment and geometry while maintaining the performance characteristics that larger GTR shocks deliver to their respective vehicles.

Technical Performance

The Traxxas GTR shock system represents cutting-edge suspension technology adapted for RC vehicles, combining race-proven engineering principles with precision manufacturing. This grey-anodised aluminium short mini shock body is engineered to specifications that match professional RC racing standards, featuring internal dimensions and fluid capacity optimised specifically for mini-scale RC trucks and rally cars. The PTFE-coated bore and TiN-coated shaft combination creates a friction coefficient so low that damping performance remains virtually identical on the first lap and the thousandth lap, making this component essential for consistent lap times in UK RC racing. The threaded body design allows for infinitesimal adjustments to preload, enabling drivers to dial in the perfect setup for different surfaces—whether you're racing on carpet, concrete, asphalt or grass. The aluminium construction itself is both stronger and lighter than plastic alternatives, improving overall vehicle handling by reducing unsprung weight while dramatically increasing durability. Unlike plastic shocks that can crack or flex under load, this aluminium body maintains rigidity through hundreds of impacts and aggressive cornering manoeuvres. The screw-secured spring perch is a critical safety feature that prevents the spring from detaching during high-speed driving or impacts, which could cause an immediate loss of suspension on that corner and a crash. The increased oil capacity means the damper fluid stays cooler and more viscous under load, providing superior damping consistency whether you're racing in hot summer conditions or during winter sessions in the UK.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What Traxxas RC models is this grey shock body compatible with? — This short mini GTR shock body is designed for the Traxxas Mini Rally VXL Ford RS200 (available in red, blue and grey variants) and the Traxxas Mini Slash BL-2S 4X4 RTR short course truck (available in pink, green, yellow and orange variants). If you own either of these mini-scale RC vehicles, this shock body will fit and dramatically improve your suspension performance.
  • Do I need to buy springs separately for this shock body? — Yes, springs are sold separately from the GTR shock bodies. Traxxas offers springs in multiple stiffness rates (measured as spring rate, typically shown as a decimal number). The correct spring rate depends on your vehicle's weight, driving style and track surface, so you should consult your vehicle's manual or contact RC Model Shop for recommendations on which spring rate suits your needs best.
  • Why is this aluminium shock body better than the plastic one my vehicle came with? — Aluminium offers several critical advantages over plastic for RC shock bodies. First, it's stronger and won't crack or flex under the stresses of impacts and aggressive cornering. Second, the PTFE coating combined with the TiN-coated shaft creates dramatically lower friction, meaning your damping stays consistent from lap one to lap one hundred. Third, the threaded body allows precise preload adjustments so you can tune your suspension perfectly. Finally, the higher oil capacity maintains better temperature stability during extended driving sessions, keeping your damping performance predictable.
  • What is the PTFE coating and why does it matter? — PTFE is polytetrafluoroethylene, a material better known as Teflon. It's one of the slipperiest substances known, with an extraordinarily low coefficient of friction. When applied to the inside of the shock bore, it allows the piston rod to move with minimal resistance, which means damping performance remains consistent throughout your entire driving session rather than degrading as friction causes heat buildup.
  • Can I use this shock body with different brands of springs or oil? — You should use genuine Traxxas springs and damper fluid designed for GTR shocks to ensure proper fitment and performance. Using incompatible springs or incorrect fluid viscosity could compromise suspension geometry and damping characteristics, affecting handling and potentially causing damage to internal seals.
  • Is this suitable for beginners? — This shock body is a replacement component rather than a complete shock assembly, so it's designed for users who already have some RC experience and understand their vehicle's suspension system. However, if you own a compatible Traxxas Mini Rally or Mini Slash and want to upgrade from plastic to aluminium shocks, this is an excellent starting point for learning about suspension tuning and component upgrades.
  • How does the grey anodised finish compare to other colours? — The grey anodised finish is purely aesthetic and offers no performance advantage over blue, green or red anodised options. Anodising is a protective process that all colours go through equally, so choose the grey finish simply if you prefer the appearance for your custom RC build. The durability and corrosion resistance are identical across all anodised colours.
  • What is the difference between short mini, long and XXL GTR shocks? — GTR shocks come in different lengths to suit different vehicle sizes and suspension geometries. The short mini format is specifically designed for compact RC vehicles like the Traxxas Mini Rally and Mini Slash, providing the correct suspension stroke and geometry for these smaller-scale trucks. Using the wrong shock length could result in improper suspension geometry, poor handling and potential contact with other chassis components.
