Overview

The Tamiya 1/35 RC Panther G Late Version (with Control Unit) TAM48219 is a highly detailed and engaging radio controlled scale model that brings one of World War II's most iconic tanks to life. This 1/35 scale assembly kit recreates the German Panther Type G Late Version, a tank legendary for its remarkable balance of mobility, firepower and survivability. Whether you're an experienced RC modeller seeking an authentic military vehicle or someone discovering the world of RC tanks in the UK for the first time, this model delivers both historical accuracy and genuine mechanical performance that will keep you entertained for hours.

Designed as a comprehensive assembly kit rather than a ready-to-run model, the Tamiya 48219 offers modellers the satisfaction of building their own fully functional radio controlled tank. This hands-on approach appeals to serious RC enthusiasts who appreciate quality engineering and want to understand their model from the ground up. The kit includes everything needed except batteries, making it an accessible entry point into RC tank hobbies whilst maintaining the sophistication that experienced modellers demand.

At just 257mm in length, this compact RC tank is perfectly sized for display, indoor operation and detailed manoeuvring in confined spaces. The model authentically captures the sloped armour, cast metal details and welded sections that defined the full-size Panther, whilst modern RC equipment ensures smooth, coordinated control via a dedicated 4-channel transmitter. This is not merely a static display piece — it's a fully functional radio controlled vehicle that moves, turns, pivots and even rotates its turret with gun elevation, making it one of the most immersive RC tank experiences available in the UK market today.

Key Features

  • Complete RC System Included — The Tamiya 48219 arrives with dedicated radio control equipment featuring the MC-07 control unit and 4-channel TTU-10 transmitter, meaning you don't need to source separate RC gear, saving time and ensuring compatibility right from the box.
  • Multi-Function Control System — The transmitter's left stick controls forward, reverse, turning and pivoting motion whilst the right stick manages turret rotation and gun elevation or depression simultaneously, creating an immersive piloting experience that mirrors real tank operation.
  • Four Selectable Speed Settings — Modellers can choose between four different speed options via the transmitter, enabling fine control over movement whether you're displaying the model slowly and deliberately or running it at higher speeds for more dynamic operation.
  • Assembly Type Tracks with Snap-Together Links — Rather than rubber band tracks, the Panther G features authentic assembly-type tracks with individual snap-together links, which look far more realistic and provide excellent ground contact and running characteristics that mirror how genuine tank tracks behave.
  • Dual Drive Motors and Dual Turret Motors — Two separate drive motors handle forward and reverse motion along with turning, whilst two dedicated turret motors manage independent rotation and gun elevation, ensuring powerful and responsive control across all functions.
  • Pre-Assembled Turret Rotation and Gun Elevation Unit — The turret control system arrives pre-assembled at the factory, reducing build complexity while maintaining the mechanical sophistication that serious modellers expect.
  • Compact Modular Design with Connector Links — The model separates into three distinct sections (front gearbox, centre turret unit and rear control unit) that connect via simple connectors, making assembly straightforward and allowing you to understand the mechanical layout of each system.
  • Historically Accurate Late-Version Detailing — The model represents the final production variant of the Panther G, complete with the squared-off lower gun shield designed to deflect direct hits, upgraded muffler detailing, and heater unit on the engine grille that distinguished late-production machines from earlier variants.
  • Superior Hull Design from Military Miniature Series — The hull benefits from Tamiya's renowned 1/35 military miniature design heritage, capturing sloped armour in style with accurate surface textures including cast metal sections and weld lines that bring visual authenticity.
  • Detailed Stowage and Accessory Parts — The left-side OVM rack features separate parts for a shovel, wire cutters and other tools, whilst the right-side OVM includes an axe, jack base and crank rod, with additional separate parts for engine hatches, heater unit, muffler, jack and stowage cases on the rear for exceptional detail.
  • Included Figures and Markings — The kit features two full figures and two marking options, allowing you to personalise the model with authentic German military insignia and create a truly unique display piece.
  • Skill Level 4 Assembly — Rated as Skill Level 4, this model is ideal for modellers with moderate to advanced experience who enjoy detailed assembly work and appreciate the learning curve involved in building a sophisticated RC vehicle.

Technical Performance

The Tamiya 48219 Panther G Late Version represents a significant achievement in scale RC tank engineering, combining brushed motor technology with intelligent control systems to deliver responsive and authentic movement characteristics. The drive system utilises two dedicated brushed motors that provide the torque necessary for smooth forward and reverse operation along with fluid turning and pivoting action, whilst two additional turret motors independently manage rotation and gun elevation, allowing simultaneous operation of all functions without compromise. The compact gearbox housed in the front section efficiently translates motor power into tracked propulsion, whilst the modular design ensures that each system (drive, turret rotation and gun elevation) operates independently yet coordinates seamlessly through the MC-07 control unit. The four selectable speed settings provide genuine versatility — slow, precise movement for display work or detailed manoeuvring, or faster operation for more dynamic running sessions. The 4-channel TTU-10 transmitter offers a logical control layout with independent stick assignments for driving and turret functions, creating an intuitive piloting experience even for those new to radio controlled tanks. Assembly-type tracks with snap-together links provide authentic visual appeal whilst delivering superior ground contact compared to rigid track systems, and the 1/35 scale offers the ideal balance between impressive detail and practical handling size. At 257mm in length with 94mm width and 85mm height (excluding figures and machine gun), this is a genuinely portable RC tank suitable for operation in confined spaces, making it perfect for indoor runs or garage displays whilst maintaining enough presence to command attention when photographed or displayed. The brushed motor system is proven, reliable and easy to maintain, making the 48219 an excellent choice for modellers who want dependable performance without the complexity of brushless electronics.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Tamiya 1/35 RC Panther G suitable for complete beginners to RC hobbies? — The model carries a Skill Level 4 rating, which indicates it is designed for modellers with moderate to advanced experience rather than complete newcomers. However, the comprehensive instruction manual and modular design with connector links make it more approachable than many complex kits. If you're new to RC tanks but have experience with other RC models or plastic assembly kits, this is definitely achievable. Beginners with patience and attention to detail can successfully build this model, though you may benefit from watching assembly tutorials or consulting experienced modellers for guidance on certain sections.
  • What batteries does the Tamiya 48219 require and how long will it run? — The model requires eight AAA/R03/UM4 batteries total — four inserted into the transmitter and four powering the model itself. These are standard alkaline batteries readily available from supermarkets and retail shops throughout the UK. Runtime depends on your battery brand and usage intensity, but quality AAA batteries typically provide 1-2 hours of continuous operation before requiring replacement. The manufacturer does not specify exact runtime, as this varies with driving style, whether you're actively using turret functions and battery quality.
  • Can I operate the turret and gun elevation whilst moving the tank at the same time? — Yes, absolutely. The 4-channel control system and MC-07 control unit are specifically designed to allow simultaneous operation of drive functions and turret functions. You can drive forwards whilst rotating the turret and elevating or depressing the gun independently, creating a genuinely immersive tank operation experience that wouldn't be possible with simpler control systems.
  • How does the assembly process work and what are the main stages? — The Panther G uses a modular assembly approach with three main sections that link together via connectors. You'll assemble the front gearbox section with its drive motors, connect this to the pre-assembled centre turret unit with its rotation and elevation motors, then attach the rear MC-07 control unit. The tracks are assembled individually with snap-together links and fitted to the completed hull. The instruction manual guides you through each stage, and the connector-based system means sections can be assembled somewhat independently before final connection.
  • What makes this Late Version Panther G different from earlier Type G variants? — The Type G Late Version, produced from mid-1944 onwards, featured several refinements over earlier A and D variants. The most visible is the squared-off lower gun shield designed to better deflect direct hits and protect the crew compartment. Additionally, this variant included upgraded mufflers for improved stealth during night operations and air intake heater units on the engine grille to supply warm air to the crew in cold conditions. The Tamiya 48219 accurately represents all these late-production features, making it historically distinct from earlier Panther variants.
  • Is this a ready-to-run model or does it require significant assembly? — This is an assembly kit, not a ready-to-run model. You will need to assemble the tank from its component parts using the provided instruction manual. However, it is not a fully disassembled kit — some elements like the turret unit arrive pre-assembled, and the modular connector-based design keeps assembly manageable. Expect several hours of building time depending on your experience level and attention to detail.
  • What is the scale and how does it compare to other RC tanks? — At 1/35 scale, this Panther is significantly larger and more detailed than typical 1/48 or smaller RC tanks, yet more manageable than enormous 1/16 scale models. The 257mm length makes it impressive enough for serious display and operation, yet still portable and suitable for indoor running in spaces where massive models would be impractical. The 1/35 scale is the sweet spot for many serious RC tank enthusiasts in the UK who want substantial size and detail without excessive scale.
  • What type of motor system does the Tamiya 48219 use? — The model uses brushed DC motors rather than brushless electronics. Two brushed drive motors handle movement whilst two additional brushed motors manage turret functions. Brushed motors are proven reliable, require minimal maintenance and are forgiving to beginners, though they don't offer quite the efficiency or top speed of brushless systems. For a model focused on realistic operation rather than extreme performance, brushed motors are entirely appropriate.
  • How realistic are the movement characteristics compared to real tanks? — Very realistic in terms of mechanical behaviour. The assembly-type tracks with snap-together links provide authentic ground contact and natural running characteristics that look far more convincing than rigid moulded tracks. The dual motors enable turning and pivoting with the weight distribution and mechanical feel of a real tank. Combined with the ability to operate turret functions independently, the overall impression of piloting an actual armoured vehicle is genuinely convincing.
  • What surface finishes and markings does the model include? — The kit includes two marking options representing authentic German military insignia and unit designations used during 1944-1945. The three-colour camouflage pattern shown in the packaging illustration serves as a reference guide if you choose to paint or weather the model. The factory finish is described as a primer coat, suggesting the model arrives ready for you to apply your chosen finish and markings.
