Overview

The FTX UTAH 2.0 1:18 Brushless 2-Speed LCG Crawler in Metallic Teal represents a completely redesigned evolution of FTX's highly successful original UTAH LCG concept. This ready to run RC crawler is engineered to deliver serious performance in a compact 1:18 scale platform, making it equally at home indoors or outdoors. Whether you're a hobbyist discovering the world of RC crawlers for the first time or an experienced trail basher seeking a capable yet accessible machine, the UTAH 2.0 combines genuine crawling capabilities with the convenience of a fully assembled, ready-to-run setup that gets you on the trail within minutes of opening the box.

Building on years of proven engineering, FTX has completely updated the UTAH 2.0 with improved performance specifications, upgraded internal components, and enhanced durability throughout. This is not simply a refresh—it's a comprehensive redesign that addresses every aspect of what makes a rock crawler exceptional. The result is a machine that tackles tight, technical terrain with impressive precision whilst remaining compact enough to explore indoor courses, confined spaces, and anywhere your imagination takes you. If you're seeking a brushless RC crawler that punches well above its weight in terms of capability and build quality, the FTX UTAH 2.0 should be at the top of your shopping list.

Key Features

  • High-Clearance Portal Geared Axles — All four corners feature high-clearance metal-geared portal axles that maximise ground clearance when navigating rocky and uneven surfaces, allowing the crawler to climb over obstacles that would stop conventional designs dead. The portal gearbox design is particularly effective for technical rock crawling because it keeps the differential higher up, away from ground contact.
  • Servo-On-Axle (SOA) Steering — The servo is mounted directly on the front axle rather than in the chassis, which ensures incredibly precise and responsive steering around tight obstacles. This layout delivers sharper turn-in and better control over technical terrain, powered by a robust 9g metal-geared servo with a reinforced metal servo horn for added strength and reliability during demanding crawling sessions.
  • Brushless Outrunner Motor with Hobbywing WP-Mini24 ESC — At the heart of the UTAH 2.0 sits an efficient brushless outrunner motor paired with a Hobbywing WP-Mini24 25A brushless speed controller. This combination delivers powerful low-speed torque for technical crawling, ultra-smooth linear throttle response without cogging at either speed setting, and an adjustable drag brake feature that allows confident control when descending steep inclines or navigating downhill sections.
  • 2-Speed Metal-Geared Transmission — The servo-operated two-speed transmission with full metal gears allows effortless transition between low-speed technical crawling for rocky terrain and high-speed trail runs across open ground. Shift between high and low gearing to suit changing conditions without stopping, and enjoy smooth, responsive power delivery in both modes.
  • Full-Time 4WD Drivetrain — Four-wheel drive is standard, delivering power to all corners at all times through a durable drivetrain featuring ball bearings, metal-geared transmission and axles, and centre CVD driveshafts with steel cups. This full-metal-geared construction ensures reliable, efficient power transfer and long-term durability even during extended bashings.
  • Oil-Filled Shock Absorbers — The suspension features oil-filled shock absorbers with aluminium caps and short soft springs, engineered to deliver smooth articulation across rocks and uneven ground. The oil-filled design provides consistent damping and prevents the bouncy feel of air-sprung systems, allowing better chassis control during technical climbs.
  • V-Type 8-Link Suspension System — This sophisticated suspension geometry provides impressive stability and articulation, working in concert with the oil-filled shocks to maintain contact with the ground across severe terrain whilst keeping the chassis level during side-to-side obstacles.
  • Low Centre of Gravity (LCG) Aluminium Chassis — The angled motor placement and LCG concept frame position weight as low as possible, dramatically improving stability on side slopes and reducing the likelihood of tip-overs during aggressive climbing. The 60/40 front-to-rear weight bias optimises balance for improved stability and climbing control, whilst the 5° angled skid plate enhances balance and climbing agility.
  • Clipless Body Mounting System — The rock racer-style bodyshell mounts without clips for a clean, streamlined appearance and simple removal when you need to access the chassis for maintenance or tuning. The pinched bodyshell features clear windows to maximise ground clearance without sacrificing scale appearance.
  • High-Traction Gravel Tread Tyres — Oversized 65mm gravel tread tyres offer excellent grip on mixed surfaces from concrete to gravel to carpet, maximising traction and improving climbing capability. The tyres mount on internal beadlock wheels, keeping them securely in place even during extreme articulation.
  • Etronix 2.4GHz Radio System — The included Etronix 2.4GHz radio provides reliable, interference-free control with modern digital frequency hopping technology. No crystal swapping needed, making this truly ready to run out of the box.
  • Centre Metal Outdrives and Telescopic Driveshafts — Precision engineering throughout the drivetrain ensures smooth, efficient power transfer whilst maintaining reliability. The telescopic centre driveshafts accommodate suspension movement without binding.

Technical Performance

The FTX UTAH 2.0 represents a serious engineering achievement in the 1:18 crawler category. Weighing approximately 460 grams, the lightweight aluminium LCG chassis provides enough mass for stability without excess weight that would slow acceleration or burden the motor. The Hobbywing WP-Mini24 25A brushless speed controller paired with the brushless outrunner motor delivers remarkable efficiency and smoothness—real-world testing confirms zero cogging at both low and high-speed operation, which is critical for technical crawling where smooth, predictable throttle response means the difference between success and failure on difficult obstacles. The 7.4V 2S 500mAh LiPo battery (included) provides adequate runtime for extended backyard or indoor sessions, though the compact package means weight is optimised for agility rather than maximum run time. The metal-geared two-speed transmission is a particular highlight, offering true versatility: low-speed crawling mode delivers incredible torque multiplication for technical rock sections, whilst high-speed mode lets you cover ground efficiently when the terrain opens up. The V-type 8-link suspension with oil-filled shocks provides the kind of smooth articulation and ground contact that separates capable crawlers from mediocre ones. All four corners feature high-clearance portal axles with metal gears, and the full-metal construction throughout the gearbox and axles means this crawler can handle sustained aggressive use without premature wear. The servo-on-axle steering design with its 9g metal-geared servo delivers responsive, accurate steering input essential for navigating between rocks and through tight gaps. Build quality throughout is impressive—this is not a toy, but a genuine hobby-grade RC crawler that respects the traditions of the sport whilst embracing modern brushless efficiency and convenient ready-to-run setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the FTX UTAH 2.0 suitable for beginners? — Yes, absolutely. Classified as Skill Level 2, the UTAH 2.0 is designed for hobbyists and intermediate users. It comes ready to run with everything assembled, so there's no complex building required. The brushless motor and ESC are beginner-friendly with smooth, predictable throttle response, and the robust construction means it can handle the occasional crash without expensive repairs. If you've never owned an RC car before, the UTAH 2.0 is an excellent entry point into the rock crawler category.
  • What battery does the FTX UTAH 2.0 use? — The crawler includes a 7.4V 2S 500mAh LiPo battery pre-installed and ready to use. This battery provides adequate runtime for casual bashing and trail sessions. The 2S LiPo format is standard for this class of crawler and offers an excellent balance between power and weight. If you want extended run times, you can purchase additional compatible 2S LiPo batteries from RC Model Shop.
  • How long does the battery take to charge? — Charge time depends on your charger specifications. The 500mAh capacity is relatively modest, so with a quality hobby-grade charger you can typically achieve a full charge in 30-45 minutes. We recommend using a dedicated LiPo charger rather than a wall charger for best results and battery longevity.
  • What makes the UTAH 2.0 better than other 1:18 crawlers? — The UTAH 2.0 stands out through its completely redesigned LCG aluminium chassis, servo-on-axle steering geometry, full metal-geared drivetrain, and two-speed transmission. Whilst other 1:18 crawlers might offer individual features, the UTAH 2.0 combines all of these elements into a cohesive package. The brushless motor with Hobbywing WP-Mini24 ESC is particularly impressive, delivering smoother operation than brushed alternatives, and the high-clearance portal axles mean ground clearance that rivals much larger crawlers.
  • Is the UTAH 2.0 waterproof? — The UTAH 2.0 is not fully waterproof, though it features typical hobby-grade weather resistance. The electronics are housed in the chassis, and the motor and ESC can handle typical moisture exposure, but we would not recommend submerging the vehicle or operating it in heavy rain. Dust, light moisture, and casual splashing are fine—just avoid water crossings that would submerge the electronics.
  • What type of terrain is the UTAH 2.0 designed for? — The UTAH 2.0 excels on rocky, technical terrain—genuine rock crawling obstacles with steep inclines, large rocks, and tight gaps. The high ground clearance, low centre of gravity, and responsive steering make it ideal for technical courses. However, the 65mm gravel tread tyres and capable suspension also make it perfectly capable on dirt, gravel, grass, and mixed surfaces. Indoors, it performs beautifully on carpet and hardwood floors. It's a true do-anything crawler rather than a specialist machine.
  • Can I upgrade the battery in the UTAH 2.0? — Yes, the included 7.4V 2S LiPo battery can be upgraded to higher capacity 2S packs for extended runtime, or you can purchase additional 2S batteries and rotate them during long sessions. The Hobbywing WP-Mini24 ESC can handle 2S LiPo batteries within the standard voltage range, so compatibility is straightforward. Always use a quality LiPo charger and follow safe charging practices.
  • How fast does the UTAH 2.0 go? — The UTAH 2.0 is engineered as a rock crawler first and foremost, so top speed is secondary to low-speed control and torque. In high-speed mode, you can expect moderate speeds suitable for trail running rather than racing. The two-speed transmission lets you select appropriate gearing for the terrain—low speed for technical obstacles, high speed for open ground—rather than maximising absolute top speed.
  • What's included in the radio system? — The Etronix 2.4GHz radio system includes both the transmitter (which requires four AAA batteries) and the receiver. This is a modern digital radio system with frequency-hopping technology, so there's no need for crystal swaps or frequency coordination. It's a single-frequency system suitable for casual bashers and hobbyists, not a racing-grade programmable radio, but it provides reliable, interference-free control for trail and crawler use.
  • Is assembly required? — No assembly is required. The UTAH 2.0 arrives fully assembled as a ready-to-run (RTR) vehicle. Simply insert four AAA batteries in the transmitter, charge the included LiPo battery, and you're ready to drive. This makes it ideal if you want to get on the trail immediately without spending time building.
