Technical Performance

The Hangar 9 P-51D Mustang 20cc ARF achieves its exceptional performance through intelligent engineering and quality construction. At 1/6-scale with a 69.5-inch wingspan, this is a large, serious RC aircraft designed for experienced pilots who appreciate both scale authenticity and genuine flying capability. The lightweight laser-cut balsa and plywood construction delivers the strength needed for gas engine vibration and reliable performance across hundreds of flight hours, whilst maintaining the light wing loading that allows confident handling even at modest power settings. The semi-symmetrical airfoil design combined with the relatively large wing area produces stable, predictable flight characteristics across a wide speed range, from slow-speed approaches with flaps deployed to respectable cruise and aerobatic speeds. The functional flaps and airfoiled control surfaces ensure smooth, proportionate control response without the heavy servos that weight down smaller models. Three distinct power paths are available: conventional petrol power using 20-21cc two or four-stroke engines like the Saito FG-21 produces authentic sound and performance; traditional glow fuel engines provide the classic RC aircraft experience with excellent throttle response; or you can install the E-flite Power 60 brushless motor paired with a 6S LiPo battery for clean, quiet electric power with no fuel smell or engine maintenance. All recommended power systems work within the included mounting hardware, and the large fuselage volume provides ample space for batteries, fuel tanks or capacitors depending on your chosen power source. The fixed landing gear equipped with four-inch wheels and functional shock struts handles grass fields effortlessly, whilst the retract-ready main and tail gear locations allow future upgrade to E-flite electric retracts for maximum scale realism in flight. The two-piece wing design with aluminium tube joiner ensures reliable alignment and easy transport, critical features for a model this size.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Hangar 9 P-51D Mustang 20cc suitable for beginning RC pilots? — No, this is an advanced model intended for experienced RC aircraft pilots. The large size, high costs of required engines and servos, and the complexity of assembly and maintenance make this a project for serious warbird enthusiasts rather than beginners. You should have substantial RC flying experience and ideally previous large aircraft experience before attempting this model.
  • What power system should I choose for the P-51D Mustang 20cc? — You have three options. The Saito FG-21 20-21cc two or four-stroke petrol engine delivers authentic sound and performance for traditional engine flying. Glow fuel engines (20-21cc) provide another classic option with excellent throttle response. For modern convenience and clean operation, the E-flite Power 60 brushless motor paired with a 6S LiPo battery offers quiet, maintenance-free electric power. All systems are fully supported by the included hardware.
  • What radio system do I need for the P-51D Mustang 20cc? — You need a full-range 5+ channel transmitter and receiver for basic operation (covering throttle, elevator, aileron, rudder, and flaps). If you plan to install the optional electric retracts, you need 6+ channels to control main gear, tail gear, and all other functions independently. Popular choices include Spektrum DSMX receivers for their reliability and range.
  • Can I upgrade the fixed landing gear to electric retracts? — Yes, the airframe is specifically retract-ready. The main and tail landing gear locations are designed to accept E-flite electric retracts (sold separately or available in money-saving combo packages). The included fixed gear with shock-absorbing struts work perfectly for grass field flying, allowing you to start flying immediately and upgrade retracts when budget allows.
  • How many servos does the P-51D Mustang 20cc need? — Eight standard-size servos are needed for basic operation controlling the two ailerons, elevator, rudder, two flaps, and necessary auxiliary functions. If using electric power without retracts, you need seven servos. Adding retractable gear requires additional channels on your radio and may require additional servos depending on your retract system.
  • Is this a good warbird for UK grass field flying? — Absolutely. The large four-inch wheels and functional shock-absorbing struts are specifically designed for grass field operations, making this an excellent choice for flying from UK club fields. The fixed landing gear is robust and reliable, and the semi-symmetrical airfoil combined with functional flaps gives excellent take-off and landing characteristics even from shorter grass strips.
  • What makes the P-51D Mustang different from other large RC warbirds? — The combination of authentic WWII historical detail (actual aircraft nose art from the 361st Fighter Group), modern construction techniques (laser-cut balsa and plywood), comprehensive scale detailing (3D cockpit, simulated engines, panel lines and rivets), and genuine power flexibility (gas, glow or electric) sets this model apart. The satin-finish covering with scale stencilling and the updated, more scale-accurate cowling design distinguish it from older warbird designs.
  • How large is the P-51D Mustang 20cc? — At 1/6-scale with a 69.5-inch (176 cm) wingspan, this is a large model requiring significant hangar and transport space. You need at least a medium-sized field for safe flying and should have a vehicle capable of transporting a model this size. The two-piece wing design does make disassembly for transport more practical than a one-piece design.
  • What is the assembly difficulty level? — This is an ARF (Almost Ready to Fly) model, meaning major construction is complete and you're primarily installing engines, servos, radio gear, and landing gear. Assembly is straightforward but time-consuming. You need experience with RC aircraft systems, proper epoxy techniques, and servo installation. Expect 20-40 hours of assembly time depending on your chosen power system and whether you add retracts.
  • Can I use this model for aerobatics or just scale flying? — Whilst the emphasis is on authentic scale flying and stable flight characteristics, the P-51D Mustang has sufficient control authority and light wing loading for basic aerobatic manoeuvres including rolls, loops and reasonable knife-edge flying. However, it's optimised for smooth, realistic warbird flying rather than aggressive aerobatics.
