Overview

The Traxxas Portal drive axle mount is a premium replacement component designed for serious RC crawlers and trail enthusiasts in the UK. This rear axle mount is engineered from 6061-T6 aluminium and finished in a professional charcoal grey anodised coating, making it an essential upgrade for your TRX-4 crawler. Whether you're tackling challenging terrain, upgrading worn components, or building a competition-grade RC car UK setup, this precision-engineered part delivers the durability and reliability that Traxxas is renowned for worldwide.

Built with the same exacting standards as factory Traxxas components, the portal drive axle mount represents a significant investment in your RC vehicle's longevity and performance. The charcoal grey anodised finish not only looks professional and understated, but also provides a protective layer that resists corrosion and damage from regular use, weather exposure, and the inevitable impacts that come with off-road RC driving. This is the kind of component that separates casual bashers from dedicated crawler pilots who demand the best from their ready to run RC trucks.

The package includes both left and right mounts along with all necessary fixings, making installation straightforward for anyone with basic mechanical knowledge. If you're serious about maintaining your TRX-4 at peak performance, or if you're building a custom crawler from components, this axle mount is an investment that will serve you well for years of reliable service on trails, rocks, and challenging terrain across the UK.

Key Features

  • 6061-T6 Aluminium construction — This aerospace-grade aluminium alloy is chosen specifically for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, meaning the axle mount is rigid enough to handle extreme forces while remaining as light as possible, which improves overall vehicle handling and performance.
  • Charcoal grey anodised finish — The professional anodising process creates a hard, durable protective coating that resists scratches, corrosion, and UV damage from outdoor use, ensuring your investment maintains its appearance and structural integrity for years.
  • Includes left and right mounts — This package contains both the left and right portal drive axle mounts, providing complete rear axle coverage so you can replace or upgrade both sides simultaneously for balanced performance and appearance.
  • Complete fastening hardware included — Four 2.5x16 CS (cap screw) fasteners are supplied with the mounts, eliminating the need to hunt for compatible hardware and ensuring you have everything required for immediate installation.
  • Portal drive system compatibility — These mounts are specifically engineered for Traxxas TRX-4 portal drive axle systems, which provide enhanced ground clearance and improved approach angles essential for serious rock crawling and technical terrain.
  • Precision engineering — Manufactured to exact Traxxas specifications, these mounts ensure perfect alignment and fit with your existing TRX-4 drivetrain, critical for reliable operation and longevity.
  • Rear axle positioning — Designed specifically as a rear component, this mount handles the unique stresses and loads experienced at the rear of a crawler platform, where traction and articulation are paramount.

Technical Performance

The Traxxas Portal drive axle mount rear component represents the pinnacle of RC crawler engineering. Constructed from 6061-T6 aluminium, this material selection reflects Traxxas's commitment to building components that deliver years of reliable service under extreme conditions. The aluminium alloy offers superior strength characteristics while maintaining minimal weight, a critical consideration in RC vehicle design where every gram affects handling, acceleration, and battery runtime. The charcoal grey anodised finish is not merely cosmetic—anodising is an electrochemical process that converts the aluminium surface into a hard ceramic coating, dramatically improving resistance to corrosion, impact damage, and UV degradation. This treatment is standard on professional-grade RC components and explains why Traxxas vehicles maintain their performance and appearance longer than lesser-quality alternatives. The rear positioning of this mount is crucial, as rear axles in crawler platforms experience different stress patterns than front axles, particularly when traversing steep inclines, rock ledges, and technical obstacles where weight distribution and traction become critical factors. The inclusion of both left and right mounts ensures symmetrical setup and balanced performance characteristics. The four 2.5x16 cap screws provide secure fastening without the bulk and weight of larger fasteners, maintaining the precision fit that TRX-4 systems are engineered for. For serious RC enthusiasts in the UK who demand reliability and longevity from their equipment, this component represents a worthwhile investment that will outlast many comparable alternatives and provide consistent performance through countless trail sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is this rear axle mount suitable for my TRX-4 crawler? — Yes, this mount is specifically engineered for Traxxas TRX-4 platform vehicles. It is compatible with all standard TRX-4 models including the unassembled chassis kits and ready to run RC options. Before purchasing, verify that your vehicle uses the portal drive axle system, as some TRX-4 variants may use different suspension configurations.
  • What does anodised aluminium mean and why does it matter? — Anodising is an electrochemical process that creates a protective ceramic layer on aluminium surfaces. This coating is significantly harder than the base metal, providing superior resistance to scratches, corrosion from moisture and salt, and UV damage from sunlight. The charcoal grey colour is integral to the anodised layer, meaning it won't fade, chip, or wear away like paint. This is why professional-grade RC components are anodised rather than painted.
  • Do I need to replace both left and right mounts at the same time? — While you can replace individual mounts if only one is damaged, installing both together ensures perfectly balanced suspension geometry and consistent handling characteristics. If you've been using your crawler extensively, both mounts have likely experienced similar wear, so replacing as a pair is generally the best approach for optimal performance.
  • What are 2.5x16 CS fasteners and are they the correct size for my TRX-4? — CS stands for cap screw, a fastener type with a hexagonal head and precise threading. The 2.5mm diameter and 16mm length are specifically sized for TRX-4 portal drive systems. Using the correct fastener size is critical—undersized fasteners risk stripping or loosening under load, whilst oversized fasteners can damage the mount threads or interfere with surrounding components.
  • Is the charcoal grey anodised finish durable for UK outdoor use? — Absolutely. Anodised aluminium is specifically chosen for outdoor RC applications because it resists corrosion from moisture, salt spray from coastal environments, and temperature fluctuations common in the UK climate. The grey colour also hides minor scratches and scuffs better than lighter finishes, maintaining a professional appearance throughout the season.
  • What is the difference between this portal drive axle mount and standard axle mounts? — Portal drive systems position the gearbox above the axle line rather than inline with it, providing increased ground clearance and improved approach angles essential for rock crawling and technical terrain. This mount is specifically engineered for that geometry, offering different mounting points and load distribution than standard axle mounts.
  • Can I use this mount as a direct replacement without disassembling other components? — In most cases, yes, though the process requires careful removal of the old mount and installation of the new one whilst keeping the axle assembly stable. If you're unfamiliar with TRX-4 assembly, consider consulting the official Traxxas manual or watching assembly videos before proceeding.
  • How often should I inspect or replace my axle mounts? — Regular inspection is recommended, particularly after rough or competitive use. Signs of wear include visible cracks, bent mounting points, excessive play in the axle assembly, or difficulty maintaining alignment. With proper maintenance, quality aluminium mounts like these can provide years of reliable service, though demanding use on rocks and ledges will naturally accelerate wear compared to casual bashing.
