Technical Performance
The FTX Ruffneck stands apart through its commitment to high-quality engineering across every component. The brushless motor and integrated ESC system represent modern RC technology at its finest—the Hobbywing FOC power system is renowned in the hobby for delivering smooth, controllable power delivery that makes it easier to navigate technical terrain at walking pace. The 2200kv motor specification combined with the 37:1 reduction drive means the Ruffneck excels at low-speed crawling where torque and control are more important than top speed. The CNC-machined aluminium chassis parts throughout the design—axle housings, steering hubs, motor mount and lower chassis plate—mean this crawler can handle the impacts and stresses of serious rock crawling without bending or flexing. The steel CVA driveshafts and centre transmission shafts add weight in the right places, providing strength where it matters most. The brass Servo Over Axle mounting plate for the Etronix servo is a professional touch that reduces unsprung weight whilst improving steering response. The twin-rail carbon-fibre chassis design keeps weight to a minimum (1690g) whilst maintaining rigidity. Ground clearance of 68mm at the chassis and 40mm at the axle ensures the Ruffneck can clear substantial obstacles without bottoming out. The 275mm wheelbase is tuned specifically for crawling geometry, balancing front-to-rear articulation with stable platform characteristics. The semi-scale bodyshell with LED headlights and hidden mounting points adds authentic detail without compromising function. With dimensions of 420mm length, 210mm width and 200mm height, this is a properly proportioned 1/10 scale model that looks and performs like a real trail vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the FTX Ruffneck 1/10 Brushless 4WD Trail RTR suitable for beginners? — The Ruffneck is classified as Skill Level 1, meaning it arrives 90% ready-to-run with no complex assembly required. However, this is a professional-grade rock crawler rather than a beginner's basher. The technology (brushless motor, FOC ESC, metal gearing) is more sophisticated than entry-level models, making it ideal for users stepping up to more capable equipment or those with some RC experience. If you've never owned an RC car before, you may find the technical setup and terrain requirements more challenging, but the radio system is straightforward and the learning curve for driving is very manageable.
- What battery does the FTX Ruffneck need and what is the runtime? — The Ruffneck accepts both 2S (7.4V) and 3S (11.1V) LiPo battery packs with a tray size of 80mm x 36mm. The 2S configuration offers more controlled, predictable performance ideal for technical crawling, whilst 3S provides higher speed and more aggressive power delivery. The specific runtime depends on battery capacity (measured in mAh) and your driving style—a typical 2000-2500mAh 2S pack will provide 30-50 minutes of trail time depending on terrain and throttle usage. You'll need to supply four AA alkaline batteries for the radio transmitter separately.
- How is the Ruffneck different from other 1/10 rock crawlers? — The Ruffneck's key differentiators are the twin-rail carbon-fibre LCG chassis design, the Hobbywing 30A FOC all-in-one brushless system, and the extensive use of CNC-machined aluminium and steel components throughout. These features combine to deliver smoother, more controlled low-speed performance and superior durability compared to simpler crawlers. The 37:1 reduction drive ratio is specifically tuned for technical crawling rather than speed. The integrated motor and ESC design reduces weight and complexity compared to separate components. Many competitors use plastic chassis parts and simpler transmission designs—the Ruffneck's engineering approach is distinctly professional-grade.
- Is the FTX Ruffneck waterproof? — The Etronix servo is specified as waterproof, which is essential for wade crossings and wet conditions. The Hobbywing ESC is not explicitly rated as fully waterproof, though it is sealed well enough for trail use in rain and water splashes. For deep water fording, additional protection would be recommended. The radio receiver box should be mounted in a waterproof location or protected with a waterproof bag for extreme conditions.
- What is the top speed of the FTX Ruffneck? — The manufacturer specifications do not list a maximum speed figure, which is deliberate—this is a crawler designed for control and torque at low speeds rather than high-speed performance. The 37:1 reduction drive ratio and 2200kv motor prioritise low-speed crawling ability. On flat terrain with 3S power, you can expect moderate speeds suitable for trail navigation, but peak speed is not a design priority on this model.
- Can I use the FTX Ruffneck in wet weather? — Yes, the Ruffneck is designed for challenging off-road conditions. The waterproof servo, sealed electronics and robust construction make it suitable for rainy days and muddy trails. However, salt water, prolonged submersion and extremely corrosive conditions should be avoided. After wet sessions, allow the model to dry completely before storing to prevent corrosion.
- How much assembly is required? — The Ruffneck arrives 90% ready-to-run, meaning the chassis, suspension, motor, ESC, servo, transmission and bodyshell are all pre-assembled and integrated. You primarily need to: install four AA batteries in the radio transmitter, bind the receiver to the transmitter (straightforward pairing process), insert your charged LiPo battery into the battery tray, and perform a basic radio calibration. No soldering, gearbox assembly or transmission building is required. Most users can be ready to drive within 15-30 minutes of unboxing.
- What is the 6/4 counterweight radio positioning and why does it matter? — The 6/4 counterweight system refers to the strategic front-to-rear positioning of the radio receiver and heavy components, with 60% of these components positioned towards the front and 40% towards the rear. This creates optimal weight distribution for the LCG chassis design, improving climbing geometry and articulation. The heavy receiver and radio gear act as active weight transfer aids rather than just dead weight, improving how the suspension works and how the tyres maintain contact with rocky terrain.
- What spare parts and upgrades are available? — FTX provides an extensive range of Ruffneck spares and hop-up options covering all major components: drivetrain parts, suspension components, chassis upgrades, servo upgrades, and body panels. This means your initial investment is protected through parts availability and you can progressively upgrade the model as you develop your skills and discover your preferences.
