Technical Performance
The FTX Ruffneck represents a complete rethinking of what ready-to-run RC crawlers should deliver. At the heart of this truck lies Hobbywing's integrated 2200KV brushless motor paired with a 30A electronic speed controller (ESC), a combination that produces exceptional low-speed torque whilst maintaining the smooth, linear power delivery essential for delicate trail work. The 37:1 reduction drive ratio—achieved through metal gears and a steel reduction shaft—means the truck moves almost imperceptibly slowly when you want it to, creeping over technical obstacles with complete driver control. This exceptional gearing combined with the Hobbywing FOC system creates a driving experience unmatched by brushed systems or less sophisticated brushless setups. The truck weighs 1690 grams, a lightness that never compromises structural integrity thanks to the precision-machined aluminium and steel components throughout. The 275mm wheelbase is specifically tuned for rock crawling geometry, providing the ideal balance between axle articulation and climbing angle. Ground clearance of 68mm at the chassis and 40mm at the axles ensures the truck clears obstacles whilst the low centre of gravity keeps weight precisely where it needs to be. All mechanical components—from the front and rear axle housings to the motor mount and steering hubs—are manufactured from 6061 aluminium using CNC machining, ensuring tight tolerances and exceptional durability. The Etronix 15kg metal-geared servo handles steering duties with reliability and precision, whilst the brass SOA mounting plate minimises steering lag. The truck accepts 2-3S LiPo batteries or runs on four AA batteries for the receiver and servo, offering flexibility in your power setup. The 46° steering angle provides the lock necessary for technical navigation without requiring excessive servo travel.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the FTX Ruffneck suitable for beginners to RC crawling? — Yes, absolutely. Whilst the Ruffneck is a high-performance trail crawler, its 90% ready-to-run configuration, smooth low-speed control from the Hobbywing FOC system, and intuitive 2.4GHz radio system make it very beginner-friendly. The truck's natural stability thanks to its low centre of gravity design means new drivers quickly gain confidence, and the excellent low-speed torque allows gentle learning without sudden power surges.
- What battery does the FTX Ruffneck need? — The Ruffneck accepts 2-3S LiPo batteries, with 2S (7.4V) recommended for general trail use and 3S (11.1V) providing higher performance. The truck also requires four AA alkaline batteries to power the receiver and steering servo independently from the main motor power. A 2000mAh 2S battery or 1300mAh 3S battery provides good runtime for trail sessions.
- What is the ground clearance, and is this enough for serious rock crawling? — The Ruffneck provides 68mm ground clearance at the chassis and 40mm at the axles. This clearance is very generous for a 1/10 scale trail crawler and absolutely sufficient for serious rock crawling, technical trail work, and navigating obstacles. The low centre of gravity design maximises this clearance's effectiveness.
- What makes the Hobbywing FOC system special for trail crawling? — FOC (Field-Oriented Control) uses advanced commutation algorithms to deliver exceptionally smooth, linear power delivery across all speeds. For trail crawling, this means you can precisely modulate throttle at extremely low speeds without the hesitation or jerky power delivery typical of older brushless systems. The 2200KV motor rating combined with the 37:1 reduction produces immense low-speed torque.
- How fast does the Ruffneck go? — The Ruffneck is designed as a trail crawler, not a speed machine. With a 37:1 reduction ratio and 2200KV motor, top speed is relatively modest—the focus is entirely on low-speed torque, precise control, and climbing ability rather than acceleration or top-end velocity.
- What is the difference between the FTX Ruffneck and other trail crawlers in the ready-to-run RC market? — The Ruffneck distinguishes itself through its carbon-fibre twin rail LCG chassis design, integrated Hobbywing FOC brushless system, CNC-machined aluminium components throughout, and 37:1 reduction transmission. Many competitors offer brushed systems or less sophisticated brushless setups; the Ruffneck's FOC technology and extreme gear reduction deliver genuinely superior low-speed control and climbing ability. The dual-rail carbon chassis also provides lighter weight and better balance than single-rail designs.
- Are all the electronic components waterproof? — The Etronix steering servo is specifically rated as waterproof, making it suitable for wet conditions. However, whilst the Hobbywing ESC and motor can handle occasional water contact, the radio receiver and battery connections should be kept dry. Use common sense around deep water or heavy rain.
- What tools do I need to maintain the Ruffneck? — Basic hex key set, small screwdrivers, and perhaps an adjustable wrench for the shock absorber springs. The threaded shock absorbers allow easy suspension tuning without specialised equipment. Most maintenance is straightforward—regular cleaning of the chassis after muddy sessions and occasional tightening of fasteners.
- How long does the battery last on a full charge? — Runtime varies depending on your battery capacity and driving style. A 2000mAh 2S battery typically provides 20-40 minutes of trail driving before recharge is needed, varying with terrain difficulty and your throttle use. Gentle trail crawling generally provides longer runtime than aggressive driving.
