Overview

The FTX Outback Mini XP Evo Unitrak Orange is a 1/18 scale 4WD brushed trail crawler that brings the advanced features and capabilities normally associated with larger 1/10 scale RC crawlers into a compact, portable package. This ready-to-run RC car UK is engineered for enthusiasts who want serious crawling performance without the size and complexity of full-scale models. Whether you're navigating rocky terrain in your garden, tackling natural rock formations, or exploring sandy trails, this brushed RC crawler delivers exceptional capability with its innovative EVO specification platform.

The Outback Mini XP Evo stands out in the 1/18 scale RC crawler market through its servo-operated 2-speed transmission gearbox, front and rear portal axles for extreme ground clearance, and a purpose-designed weight bias that positions the heavy components lower and further forward for optimal crawling performance. The vehicle is supplied as a complete ready-to-run RC car with everything needed to start driving immediately—including a fully charged 7.4V 2S 600mAh Li-Po battery, USB charger, and integrated radio system. This makes it an ideal choice for beginners discovering RC trails for the first time, as well as experienced RC enthusiasts looking for a secondary vehicle or a highly capable miniature crawler for technical terrain.

Built with an aluminium rail chassis and featuring heavy-duty metal gears throughout the drivetrain, the Mini XP Evo represents excellent value as a brushed RC trail crawler that can withstand demanding off-road use. The combination of low-speed torque capability, extended run times of up to 45 minutes, and sophisticated 2-speed transmission gearbox makes this ready-to-run RC one of the most feature-rich vehicles in its class. If you're searching for a quality RC crawler UK that delivers big-rig performance in a small-scale package, the FTX Outback Mini XP Evo is an outstanding choice.

Key Features

  • Front and Rear Portal Axles — Portal axles are integrated directly into the front and rear axle housings, providing exceptional ground clearance over obstacles without increasing overall vehicle height. This is a critical feature for rock crawling, allowing the chassis to ride higher and navigate steep terrain more effectively than conventional axle designs.
  • 2-Speed Transmission Gearbox with Metal Gears — The servo-operated 2-speed transmission includes first gear with a high torque ratio of 98:1 for ultra-slow crawling and obstacle negotiation, and second gear with a 24.5:1 ratio for faster straight-line speed on flat terrain. All gears are constructed from heavy-duty metal, enabling future motor upgrades to larger 180, 240 or 270 size motors without component failure or loss of durability.
  • Heavy Duty Metal Gears in Front and Rear Axles — Unlike many competitors that use plastic gears, the FTX Outback Mini XP Evo features full internal metal gears in both front and rear axle assemblies, providing exceptional longevity and reliability even under sustained crawling loads. This construction allows the vehicle to handle increased power and torque from upgraded motors without stripping or breaking internal components.
  • New 4 Channel ESC/RX with Smooth Low Speed Throttle Response — The integrated 4-channel electronic speed controller and receiver provides super-smooth throttle responsiveness at ultra-low speeds, which is essential for precise crawling control over technical terrain. The responsive throttle calibration ensures you can creep slowly over obstacles without jerky acceleration that would disrupt weight transfer and trail control.
  • Full Function Light System Controlled by Transmitter — The vehicle features integrated LED lighting throughout the body that can be controlled directly from the transmitter, adding realistic scale detail and improving visibility when operating in low-light conditions. The lighting is fully waterproofed and requires no additional wiring or components, as it integrates into the PPX 4 electronics platform.
  • Clipless Body Mounting on Unitrak and Van Bodies — The body mounting system allows tool-free removal and installation without screws or clips, making body changes and maintenance dramatically faster and more convenient. The Unitrak utility body features this modern mounting system along with clear windows and moulded scale accessories for enhanced realism.
  • Oversized Internal Bead Lock Wheels (1.2 inches) — The 1.2-inch bead lock wheels secure the tyres against the wheel rim through internal pressure rather than external clips, preventing tyre roll during extreme articulation and ensuring consistent tyre seating throughout the crawl. The larger diameter maximises ground clearance and improves obstacle-climbing capability.
  • Oversized All-Terrain Tyres (1.2 inches) — Matching the oversized wheels, the 1.2-inch all-terrain tyres provide aggressive tread patterns and increased surface contact for superior grip on rocky, muddy, and sandy terrain. The larger tyre diameter also extends the overall ground clearance of the vehicle for navigating large obstacles.
  • Oversized 130 Brushed Motor with Maximum Torque — The 130-size brushed motor is specifically tuned for maximum torque output rather than raw speed, making it ideal for crawling applications where slow, controlled power delivery is more valuable than high-speed performance. The larger motor size also enables reliable operation with future upgrade components.
  • Chassis-Mounted Servo with Panhard Bar — The servo is securely mounted to the aluminium chassis with a Panhard bar linkage that maintains consistent steering geometry during suspension articulation. This design prevents bump-steer and ensures precise directional control even when the suspension is fully compressed or extended on technical terrain.
  • LCG Weight Bias with Front-Mounted Motor — The motor is positioned forward in the chassis and all heavy components are positioned as low as possible, creating a low centre of gravity that dramatically improves stability and reduces rollover risk on steep inclines and side slopes. This weight distribution is fundamental to the vehicle's crawling performance and technical capability.
  • High Torque Transmission with 98:1 First Gear Ratio — The first gear ratio of 98:1 provides exceptional mechanical advantage for moving the vehicle at walking pace or slower, with enough torque to pull over large obstacles and through deep mud without motor stalling. This allows drivers to negotiate the steepest crawling terrain with controlled precision.
  • PPX 4 Standard Water-Resistant Electronics — The integrated electronics platform is sealed against water splash and moisture ingress, protecting the motor, ESC, servo, and receiver during operation in wet conditions. This water-resistance extends the vehicle's operating range to include damp trails, stream crossings, and morning dew conditions.
  • Aluminium Rail Chassis — The lightweight yet rigid aluminium rail design provides structural support while maintaining minimal unsprung weight, improving suspension response and articulation. The aluminium construction resists corrosion and provides excellent durability compared to plastic or steel alternatives.
  • 1.2mm Thick Painted Lexan Body with Clear Windows — The Unitrak utility body is constructed from premium 1.2mm thick polycarbonate (Lexan) with clear window panels that showcase the internal mechanical components. The thick material resists cracking and damage from impacts, whilst the clear windows provide authentic scale visibility and an unobstructed view of the detailed interior.
  • Tight 80cm Turning Radius — The responsive steering geometry and narrow wheelbase produce an 80-centimetre turning radius, allowing the vehicle to navigate tight switchbacks, rocky canyons, and confined trail sections with remarkable agility. This tight turning circle is invaluable for technical terrain where space is limited.
  • Steering Angle up to 45 Degrees — The steering linkage allows up to 45 degrees of wheel deflection, providing extreme articulation for climbing steep inclines and negotiating severe lateral obstacles. The large steering angle is combined with the Panhard bar servo mount to prevent bump-steer and maintain precision control throughout the full steering range.
  • Extended Run Times of up to 45 Minutes — The 600mAh Li-Po battery combined with the efficient brushed motor and 2-speed transmission provides extended operating sessions of up to 45 minutes, allowing longer exploration of trails without returning for battery changes. This runtime is exceptional for a 1/18 scale vehicle and enables multiple trail sections to be completed in a single charge.
  • Included 7.4V 2S 600mAh Li-Po Battery and USB Charger — The ready-to-run package includes a pre-assembled 2S LiPo battery with XT30 connectors and a USB charger, allowing immediate operation from any computer, power bank, or USB mains adapter. The 7.4V nominal voltage provides optimal performance with the 4-channel ESC and servo.

Technical Performance

The FTX Outback Mini XP Evo represents a significant engineering achievement in 1/18 scale trail crawler design, combining components and systems that deliver performance previously found only in larger 1/10 scale ready-to-run RC models. The brushed 130-size motor generates exceptional torque whilst maintaining efficient power consumption from the included 7.4V 2S 600mAh Li-Po battery, producing extended runtimes of up to 45 minutes under typical trail conditions. The new final drive ratio, combined with the servo-operated 2-speed transmission featuring first gear at 98:1 and second gear at 24.5:1, creates a versatile platform capable of ultra-slow crawling speeds when needed or reasonable straight-line velocity when crossing flat terrain in high gear.

The drivetrain construction emphasises durability and upgrade potential, with heavy-duty metal gears specified throughout the front and rear axles and the 2-speed transmission itself. This full-metal-gear design enables future motor upgrades to 180, 240 or 270 size units without requiring chassis modifications or gearbox replacement—a key consideration for users who wish to progressively increase vehicle capability. The brushed motor selected is specifically calibrated for maximum torque output, sacrificing raw speed in favour of the low-speed precision essential for technical crawling applications. The vehicle's weight bias is deliberately engineered with the motor mounted forward and all heavy components positioned low in the chassis, producing a low centre of gravity that dramatically improves stability on steep inclines and reduces rollover tendency on side slopes.

Suspension and chassis engineering focus on maximum articulation and obstacle clearance. The front and rear portal axles are not merely axle-mounted portals, but integrated high-clearance designs that raise the axlehousing relative to the chassis, extending ground clearance significantly without increasing overall vehicle height. The independent suspension combines with a Panhard bar-mounted servo to prevent bump-steer during extreme compression or extension. The aluminium rail chassis provides exceptional rigidity whilst remaining lightweight, optimising suspension response and articulation. The oversized 1.2-inch bead lock wheels fitted with aggressive all-terrain tyres maximise rolling diameter and surface contact area, essential for grip on loose or rocky terrain. The tight 80-centimetre turning radius combined with steering angles up to 45 degrees creates a nimble platform capable of navigating constricted trail sections and steep switchbacks with precision.

Electronics and power delivery have been specifically calibrated for crawling performance. The new 4-channel ESC and integrated receiver provide super-smooth low-speed throttle response, allowing micro-adjustments to vehicle speed and enabling creep-speed control essential for precise obstacle negotiation. The PPX 4 water-resistant electronics platform protects all components from moisture ingress, extending operation into wet trail conditions and damp environments. The full-function light system, controlled directly from the transmitter, adds both visual appeal and practical illumination for low-light operation. The included 7.4V 2S 600mAh Li-Po battery with XT30 connectors provides a 45-minute runtime under typical trail use, and the included USB charger offers convenient charging from any standard USB power source—computers, power banks, or mains adapters all provide compatible power. This level of engineering and specification has previously required building a custom 1/10 scale crawler from kit components; the FTX Outback Mini XP Evo delivers equivalent capability in a ready-to-run 1/18 scale package that requires no additional assembly or tuning.
