Overview

The FTX Outback Mini XP Evo Van Mustard Yellow is a sophisticated 1/18 scale 4WD trail crawler RTR that brings full-size RC car features to a compact, highly capable platform. This ready-to-run RC car UK enthusiasts have been waiting for combines authentic trail-crawling performance with impressive engineering normally found in much larger 1/10 scale vehicles. Whether you're a seasoned RC hobbyist looking for a fun secondary basher, a newcomer to the world of ready to run RC crawlers, or someone who wants serious off-road capability in a smaller package, the Outback Mini XP Evo delivers on every front.

FTX has engineered this brushed electric RC crawler with trail-specific features that make it exceptionally competent on challenging terrain. The EVO specification represents the latest evolution of the already-impressive Mini Outback line, introducing a servo-operated 2-speed transmission that allows drivers to switch between low-speed crawling gears and faster straight-line running modes. This dual-range capability transforms how you can tackle different trail sections, from technical rock crawling to more open terrain driving. The combination of portal axles, high-torque transmission, and precision-tuned weight distribution creates a crawler that genuinely excels at what it's designed to do.

What sets the Outback Mini XP Evo apart in the competitive UK RC market is the attention to detail throughout the design. Every system—from the aluminium chassis to the water-resistant electronics to the detailed painted lexan bodywork—has been engineered with both performance and longevity in mind. This is not a toy RC car; it's a serious trail vehicle scaled down to pocket-friendly proportions.

Key Features

  • Servo-Operated 2-Speed Transmission Gearbox with Metal Gears — The transmission features a high-torque design with two distinct gear ratios: a super-low first gear at 98:1 for technical crawling and obstacle negotiation, and a second gear at 24.5:1 for faster running on flat terrain. This allows drivers to choose the optimal gear ratio for any trail section, maximising both crawling performance and run-time versatility. The full internal metal gears ensure durability and support future motor upgrades to larger sizes including 180, 240, or 270 brushed motors without requiring gearbox replacement.
  • Front and Rear High-Clearance Portal Axles — Portal axles are a signature feature of serious crawlers, and the Outback Mini XP Evo features them at both ends. These specialised axle designs provide exceptional ground clearance by mounting the differential above the wheel centreline, allowing the chassis to sit much higher relative to obstacles. This engineering enables the crawler to surmount rocks, logs, and rough terrain that would stop other small-scale RC vehicles.
  • Heavy-Duty Metal Gears in Front and Rear Axles — Rather than using plastic gears that can wear or break under load, FTX has specified metal gears throughout the drivetrain. This construction method ensures the vehicle can handle sustained trail use, rocky terrain, and aggressive crawling without mechanical failure. The robust gear train also supports the weight bias modifications and motor torque characteristics.
  • New Final Drive Ratio for Super-Slow Crawling — The redesigned final drive delivers exceptionally slow crawling speeds in low gear, allowing the vehicle to navigate technical obstacles at walking pace. This precision control is crucial for competitive crawling events and for building driver skills on challenging terrain.
  • Oversize 130 Brushed Motor with 100T Configuration — The 130-sized brushed motor uses a 100T configuration to deliver maximum torque output. This is the optimal balance of power and efficiency for small-scale crawling. The motor's brushed design makes it straightforward to service and maintain, and the robust construction means it will tolerate the sustained, low-speed, high-torque demands of serious trail crawling.
  • Redesigned Weight Bias with Front-Mounted Motor and Lower Centre of Gravity — FTX engineers have repositioned internal components to move weight further forward and lower in the chassis. This weight distribution dramatically improves crawling performance by shifting the centre of gravity towards the front wheels, improving grip and traction during technical climbing and reducing the tendency for the vehicle to tip backward on steep grades.
  • Transmission Reverse Rotation of Rear Driveshaft — The transmission's clever design rotates the rear driveshaft in the reverse direction to the front axles. This engineering feature helps minimise chassis torque twist during acceleration, maintaining better control and reducing the stress on suspension components during demanding crawling.
  • Clipless Body Mounting on Van and Unitrak Bodies — The Van and Unitrak utility vehicle bodies mount to the chassis without traditional clips or fasteners, making body removal and installation faster and easier. This feature is particularly appreciated when accessing components for maintenance or when swapping between different painted bodyshell options.
  • New 4-Channel ESC/RX with Super Smooth Low-Speed Throttle Response — The integrated electronic speed controller and receiver provides precise throttle control with ultra-smooth power delivery at low speeds. This responsiveness is essential for crawling, where subtle throttle modulation is the difference between a clean obstacle negotiation and a stall or rollover. The water-resistant PPX 4 electronics ensure reliable operation in damp trail conditions.
  • Full-Function Light System Controlled by Radio Transmitter — The vehicle features integrated LED lights that illuminate during operation and can be controlled via your transmitter (specific light configuration depends on which body type you select—Van, Texan, or Unitrak). This adds visual realism and enhances visibility during low-light trail sessions, whilst also providing practical illumination for indoor crawling spaces.
  • Chassis-Mounted Servo with Panhard Bar — The steering servo is mounted directly to the aluminium chassis and features a panhard bar linkage. This configuration provides precise steering response and maintains consistent steering geometry through suspension articulation, essential for technical trail navigation.
  • Oversize Internal Bead-Lock Wheels (1.2 inch) — The wheels feature internal bead-lock rings that prevent tyres from rolling off the rims during extreme articulation or high-torque application. The 1.2-inch wheel size is oversized relative to the chassis, providing additional ground clearance and a more scale-appropriate appearance.
  • Oversize All-Terrain Tyres (1.2 inch) — Matching the wheels, the all-terrain pattern tyres are also oversized and designed specifically for trail work. The tread pattern provides genuine grip on loose surfaces, rock, and varied terrain whilst the softer compound ensures good adhesion on technical sections.
  • Aluminium Rail Chassis with Structural Rigidity — The chassis frame is constructed from aluminium, which provides excellent strength-to-weight characteristics. The rail-style design offers good torsional rigidity whilst maintaining a lightweight structure, crucial for small-scale RC performance.
  • 1.2mm Thick Painted Lexan Body with Clear Windows and Moulded Scale Accessories — Three detailed body options are available: the Rock Van, Texan pick-up truck, and Unitrak utility vehicle. Each body is injection-moulded from durable polycarbonate (lexan) at 1.2mm thickness with factory paint finish. Clear window sections provide visibility into the cabin, and all bodies feature moulded-in scale details and accessories including bumpers, mirrors, and grille details. This level of body detail is typically seen on more expensive 1/10 scale vehicles.
  • Tight 80cm Turning Radius for Agile Manoeuvring — The steering geometry and turning angle combine to deliver an exceptionally tight turning radius of just 80 centimetres. This allows the vehicle to navigate confined trail sections and make sharp direction changes without requiring multiple forward-and-reverse manoeuvres.
  • Large 45-Degree Steering Angle for Precision Control — The front wheels can steer up to 45 degrees, providing responsive directional control and helping achieve that impressive turning radius. This large steering angle is particularly useful for technical crawling where precise positioning is necessary.
  • Extended Run Times Up to 45 Minutes — The included 7.4V 2S 600mAh lithium polymer battery delivers genuine trail runtime of up to 45 minutes per charge. For a small-scale crawler, this represents excellent value and allows for extended trail sessions without constant battery swaps.

Technical Performance

The FTX Outback Mini XP Evo represents a significant engineering achievement in bringing high-performance trail-crawling capability to the 1/18 scale class. At its core sits a brushed electric drivetrain built for torque and reliability rather than maximum speed. The 130-sized brushed motor with 100T configuration is optimally tuned for the 2-speed transmission system, delivering impressive pulling power across both gear ranges. In first gear (98:1 ratio), the vehicle produces extraordinary torque output suitable for climbing steep grades and traversing obstacles; switching to second gear (24.5:1) provides more speed for faster terrain. The new final drive ratio has been specifically designed to provide super-slow crawling performance, allowing drivers to move at walking pace or slower through technical sections—precisely what serious trail crawling demands. The servo-operated transmission allows seamless gear switching without stopping, controlled directly from your transmitter. Electrically, the vehicle employs FTX's PPX 4 water-resistant electronic components, comprising the integrated 4-channel ESC/receiver unit. The water resistance rating means the electronics tolerate light splashing and damp conditions typical of outdoor trail environments, though full submersion should be avoided. The ESC features the critical smooth low-speed throttle response required for crawling—crawlers need to operate at extremely low speeds with precise throttle modulation, and harsh or jerky throttle response would make the vehicle unstable and difficult to control on technical terrain. The 7.4V 2S lithium polymer battery provides optimal voltage for the brushed motor whilst keeping the vehicle lightweight, and the 600mAh capacity delivers the claimed 45-minute runtime. The chassis engineering reflects serious crawling design philosophy. The aluminium rail chassis provides excellent torsional rigidity—the frame resists twisting forces generated by uneven weight distribution and dramatic suspension articulation. The weight bias redesign places the motor and heavier components forward and lower, shifting the centre of gravity toward the front wheels. This is crucial for crawling performance because it improves weight transfer during climbs, enhances front-wheel traction, and reduces the tendency for the vehicle to flip backward when ascending steep obstacles. The panhard bar steering linkage mounted to the chassis maintains consistent steering geometry as the suspension articulates, preventing toe-in or toe-out changes that would cause the vehicle to pull left or right unpredictably during extreme suspension movement. The portal axles at front and rear are the signature feature of dedicated crawlers. By mounting the differential carrier above the wheel hub centreline, portal axles dramatically increase ground clearance without raising the chassis, allowing the vehicle to surmount larger obstacles relative to its size. Both front and rear axles feature heavy-duty metal gears, eliminating the wear and breakage associated with plastic gear trains. The transmission reverse rotation of the rear driveshaft is a clever engineering detail that minimises chassis torque twist during acceleration—as the wheels try to rotate the chassis in one direction, the reverse-rotating rear driveshaft creates a counter-force that stabilises the vehicle, particularly important during steep climbs where stability is paramount. Suspension geometry includes a panhard bar to control lateral chassis movement during articulation, ensuring the vehicle tracks straight through turns despite significant suspension extension and compression. The servo-mounted steering arrangement ties directly to the chassis rather than to a live-axle assembly, providing predictable steering response independent of suspension movement. Oversize 1.2-inch bead-lock wheels with matching all-terrain tyres provide excellent grip on varied terrain whilst the bead-locks prevent tyre rolloff during the extreme articulation common in technical crawling.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the FTX Outback Mini XP Evo suitable for beginners to RC crawling? — Yes, this is an excellent entry point for RC crawling enthusiasts. The ready-to-run format means you open the box, charge the battery, and drive. The forgiving size (1/18 scale) makes it easier to manage than larger crawlers, and the straightforward brushed motor system requires minimal maintenance knowledge. However, the technical crawling focus means you'll get more enjoyment if you're specifically interested in slow-speed trail driving rather than high-speed racing. The included transmitter and battery make it immediately usable for outdoor or indoor trail sessions.
  • What battery does the FTX Outback Mini XP Evo use and how long does it run? — The vehicle includes a 7.4V 2S (two-cell) 600mAh lithium polymer battery pack. This delivers the claimed runtime of up to 45 minutes per charge under typical trail conditions. The included USB charger fully charges the battery, though runtime may vary depending on driving intensity—sustained high-speed driving or constant climbing will reduce runtime compared to moderate technical crawling. Additional batteries are available separately to extend your trail time without waiting for recharges.
  • Can I upgrade the motor in the FTX Outback Mini XP Evo to something larger? — Yes, one of the key features is that the transmission contains full internal metal gears, which means it's built robust enough to accept larger brushed motor upgrades. Motor sizes such as 180T, 240T, or 270T brushed motors can be fitted without requiring gearbox replacement. However, larger motors will increase current draw from the battery, potentially reducing runtime unless you also upgrade the battery pack. Motor upgrades are entirely optional and the vehicle performs excellently with the standard 130-100T motor.
  • What's the difference between the FTX Outback Mini XP Evo and other 1/18 scale RC crawlers? — The Outback Mini XP Evo is distinguished by its 2-speed servo-operated transmission, which is unusual in the 1/18 scale class and typically found on larger vehicles. This allows switching between low-speed crawling gears and faster running modes without stopping. The combination of portal axles at both ends, metal gears, redesigned weight bias, and the new final drive ratio specifically optimised for slow crawling performance gives this vehicle capabilities typically associated with 1/10 scale dedicated crawlers. The 1.2mm lexan bodies with moulded details and integrated LED lighting provide impressive scale realism. Other small crawlers may be simpler single-speed designs without these advanced features.
  • Is the FTX Outback Mini XP Evo waterproof? — The electronics carry a PPX 4 water-resistant rating, meaning they tolerate splashing and damp conditions typical of outdoor trail environments. However, it is not rated for full submersion in water. You should avoid deliberately driving through deep water or submerging the vehicle. Light rain, splash from puddles, and damp grass are tolerable, but you should rinse the vehicle with fresh water and allow it to dry properly after wet conditions to prevent corrosion.
  • How does the 2-speed transmission work and when would I use each gear? — The transmission is servo-controlled, meaning the same transmitter servo that controls steering can shift between gears. First gear (98:1 ratio) provides maximum torque for slow technical crawling—use this for rocky terrain, steep climbs, and obstacle courses where you need extreme low-speed control. Second gear (24.5:1 ratio) provides more speed and is suitable for flatter ground, faster trail sections, and general running between obstacles. You can shift gears on the fly without stopping the vehicle, allowing you to optimise your gear selection for the specific terrain you're currently navigating.
  • What body colour and style options are available? — The Mustard Yellow version featured here comes as a Van (Rock Van) bodywork. FTX also offers the Outback Mini XP Evo in other colours and with alternative body options: the Texan pick-up truck and Unitrak utility vehicle designs. Each body is injection-moulded lexan with clear windows, factory paint finish, and moulded scale details. Spare body kits in different colours are available separately if you want to customise the appearance of your vehicle or run different body styles for different trail days.
  • What is the turning radius and steering angle? — The vehicle achieves a tight 80-centimetre turning radius with steering angles up to 45 degrees, meaning the front wheels can steer nearly perpendicular to the vehicle direction. This allows the vehicle to navigate tight spaces and make sharp direction changes essential for technical trail courses. The combination of tight turning radius and precise steering control is a key feature for crawling, where precise positioning around obstacles is necessary.
  • Is this a ready-to-run vehicle or does it require assembly? — The Outback Mini XP Evo is fully ready-to-run. It arrives pre-assembled, fully painted, with electronics installed, and includes the transmitter and battery. You simply charge the battery using the included USB charger and you're ready to drive. No tools, soldering, or technical knowledge required—ideal for those new to RC cars who want to get driving immediately. Basic maintenance such as occasional cleaning and checking battery connections is recommended, but the vehicle is designed to be driven straight from the box.
