Overview
The FTX Outback Mini XP Evo Van Metal Grey 1/18 Scale 4WD Trail Crawler RTR brings authentic van life to the world of RC crawling. This ready to run RC car UK enthusiasts have been waiting for combines nostalgic '80s American van styling with modern trail crawling performance that rivals much larger models. Whether you're exploring indoor spaces or tackling outdoor terrain, this brushed van crawler delivers the features normally reserved for 1/10 scale rock crawlers, all in a compact 1/18 package that's perfect for collectors and serious bashers alike.
The FTX Outback Mini XP Evo is engineered from the ground up for slow, controlled crawling performance with exceptional scale realism. Featuring brand new designed full metal geared portal axles front and rear, this RC trail truck offers improved ground clearance over comparable scale models whilst maintaining the tight manoeuvrability needed for precision obstacle navigation. The combination of a high torque transmission with a final drive ratio of 104:1, paired with a 2-speed transmission gearbox with metal gears, means you can crawl at genuinely slow speeds or switch to second gear for flat ground cruising. This versatility makes the Outback Mini XP Evo an exceptional choice for anyone seeking a ready to run RC crawler that delivers real performance without compromise.
Every detail has been considered to deliver an authentic and capable vehicle. The van features scale finishing touches including moulded bumpers, a full function LED light system with headlights, brake lights, indicators and hazard capabilities, plus realistic mirrors and wipers. Hidden clipless body mounting keeps the aesthetic clean whilst making maintenance straightforward. With a tight turning radius of just 80cm and a steering angle of up to 45 degrees, this compact trail crawler can navigate tight spaces and sharp turns that would challenge larger vehicles. Extended run times of up to 45 minutes on the included 7.4V 2S 600mAh Li-Po battery ensure you'll have plenty of crawling time before needing to recharge.
Key Features
- Full Metal Geared Portal Axles — The front and rear axles feature brand new design heavy duty metal gears, providing exceptional durability and superior ground clearance over obstacles. Portal axles are essential for serious crawling as they lift the differential higher, allowing the vehicle to clear rocks, logs and rough terrain that would stop conventional axles in their tracks.
- 2-Speed Transmission Gearbox — With selectable first gear (98:1 ratio) and second gear (24.5:1 ratio), you can crawl at painstakingly slow speeds for technical sections or shift to higher speed for flat ground running. The metal gears throughout the transmission mean future motor upgrades to larger sizes like 180, 240 or 270 are entirely feasible without compromising durability.
- New 4-Channel ESC/RX Unit — The integrated electronic speed controller and receiver system features super smooth low speed throttle response, essential for precise trail crawling where micro-adjustments separate successful obstacle clears from stalls. The PPX 4 standard water-resistant electronics protect your investment from moisture encountered during outdoor adventures.
- Full Function LED Light System — Controlled independently via your transmitter, the lighting includes front headlights with low beam and high beam functions, rear lights, brake lights, left and right indicator lights, reverse light, spotlight and hazard light modes. This comprehensive lighting setup adds tremendous scale realism and makes evening or indoor crawling safer and more enjoyable.
- Oversize Bead Lock Wheels and All-Terrain Tyres — The 1.2-inch internal bead lock wheels feature oversize all-terrain tyres that provide exceptional grip and traction across varied terrain. Bead lock wheels are critical for serious crawling as they prevent tyre rolloff during extreme articulation, ensuring your vehicle stays mobile in the most challenging situations.
- Aluminium Rail Chassis — Constructed from aluminium rail chassis with precision engineering, this platform provides the rigidity needed for demanding trail work whilst maintaining a low centre of gravity through intelligent weight bias placement. The front-mounted motor design and forward weight bias specifically enhance crawling performance and stability.
- Chassis Mounted Servo with Panhard Bar — The servo mounting and panhard bar steering geometry ensure predictable, responsive steering even under extreme articulation. This professional-grade steering setup delivers the tight turning radius of 80cm and the exceptional 45-degree steering angle that makes navigating confined spaces achievable.
- Scale Finished Painted Lexan Body — The 1.2mm thick painted lexan shell with clear windows delivers durability whilst maintaining authentic scale appearance. Moulded bumpers, mirrors and wipers add character, whilst the hidden clipless body mounting keeps the design clean and makes removing the body for maintenance effortless.
- 130 Size Brushed Motor with High Torque Transmission — The oversized 130 brushed motor paired with the 104:1 final drive ratio (in first gear) generates exceptional torque for hauling the vehicle up steep inclines and powering through technical sections. This motor choice delivers the slow crawling performance that defines the Outback Mini XP Evo experience.
Technical Performance
The FTX Outback Mini XP Evo Van is engineered with meticulous attention to performance fundamentals that separate genuine trail crawlers from casual bashers. The transmission system represents a major engineering achievement for its scale, featuring heavy duty metal gears throughout the drivetrain with selectable first gear (98:1) and second gear (24.5:1) ratios. This means you can achieve genuinely slow crawl speeds through technical terrain or shift to higher speed for straightforward sections. The 130 size brushed motor delivers substantial torque when paired with this transmission, enabling the vehicle to pull itself up near-vertical obstacles and maintain momentum through rock gardens that would defeat lesser designs. The new 4-channel ESC/RX unit with smooth throttle response at low speeds transforms the crawling experience, allowing micro-adjustments in speed that separate controlled clears from spinouts on technical terrain.
Construction quality throughout the Outback Mini XP Evo emphasises durability and longevity. The aluminium rail chassis provides the structural rigidity essential for sustained trail work, whilst the full metal gears in both front and rear portal axles ensure this vehicle can handle demanding terrain without premature wear. The PPX 4 standard water-resistant electronics protect against moisture encountered during outdoor adventures, though the vehicle itself is not fully waterproof. The 1.2mm thick painted lexan body combines impact resistance with weight efficiency, and the clear window inserts maintain scale appearance whilst allowing visibility of the interior detailing. The 7.4V 2S 600mAh Li-Po battery provides extended run times of up to 45 minutes depending on driving style, and arrives with a convenient USB charger for field recharging. The brushed 055 55T motor is easily replaceable, and the metal gear construction throughout means upgrading to larger motors (180, 240 or 270 size) remains viable for those seeking enhanced performance without mechanical compromise.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the FTX Outback Mini XP Evo suitable for RC crawling beginners? — Yes, this ready to run RC crawler is an excellent choice for anyone new to trail crawling. The pre-assembled construction means immediate out-of-box operation, whilst the smooth ESC throttle response and selectable 2-speed transmission make it forgiving and controllable even for inexperienced drivers. The compact 1/18 scale size makes it ideal for practising crawling techniques in confined spaces before moving to larger vehicles.
- What battery does the FTX Outback Mini XP Evo Van need? — The vehicle comes complete with a 7.4V 2S 600mAh Li-Po battery and USB charger, providing everything needed for immediate operation. The 2S compatibility means the battery is safe and reliable for this application. If you wish to extend run times further, compatible 2S LiPo batteries of similar or slightly larger capacity (such as 800mAh or 1000mAh) will work, though they may require a different charger depending on connector type.
- How long can I expect to run the vehicle on a single battery charge? — Extended run times of up to 45 minutes are achievable on the included 7.4V 2S 600mAh Li-Po battery, depending on driving style. Conservative, slow crawling will maximise runtime, whilst more aggressive driving or higher-speed running on flat ground will reduce battery life. Having a second battery available is recommended for extended play sessions.
- What makes the FTX Outback Mini XP Evo different from standard 1/18 RC cars? — This is a genuine rock crawler engineered to deliver features normally found on 1/10 scale vehicles. The full metal geared portal axles front and rear, 2-speed transmission with metal gears, servo-controlled LED lighting system and high torque transmission (104:1 first gear ratio) represent a level of sophistication rarely seen at 1/18 scale. Most 1/18 RC cars are simple bashers; the Outback Mini XP Evo is a serious trail machine.
- Can the motor be upgraded to a larger size? — Yes, the full internal metal gears throughout the transmission mean you can confidently upgrade to larger motor sizes such as 180, 240 or 270 without losing durability. This is a significant advantage over vehicles with plastic gears, which would fail under the torque of larger motors. Such upgrades would enhance performance and pulling power for those seeking further capability.
- What is the turning radius and how does that affect where I can use it? — The tight turning radius of just 80cm combined with a 45-degree steering angle means this vehicle can manoeuvre in surprisingly confined spaces, including tight indoor areas. This manoeuvrability makes the Outback Mini XP Evo equally at home indoors navigating between furniture or outdoors threading between trees and rocks on hillsides.
- Is this vehicle waterproof? — The electronics feature PPX 4 standard water-resistant protection, which provides splash and moisture resistance suitable for outdoor crawling in damp conditions. However, the vehicle is not fully waterproof and should not be submerged or driven through deep water. Light rain and wet terrain are perfectly acceptable, but avoid water crossings that could submerge the electronics.
- What colours are available for the FTX Outback Mini XP Evo Van? — The vehicle is available in Metal Grey, Unitrak utility vehicle body, and Texan pick-up body style. Each features moulded scale accessories, clear windows and the full LED lighting system. All variations use the same proven chassis and drivetrain, so your choice is primarily aesthetic based on which body style appeals to you.

How does the FTX FTX5483MG Evo Van crawler handle terrain challenges?
The FTX FTX5483MG Outback Mini XP Evo Van is equipped with front and rear portal axles that significantly raise the axle height, allowing the wheels to clear rocks, roots, and uneven surfaces with ease. This design not only improves ground clearance but also reduces torque twist, thanks to the reverse rotation of the rear driveshaft. Combined with a redesigned weight bias that positions mass lower and further forward, the crawler maintains exceptional stability during steep climbs and side-hill maneuvers. These enhancements make the FTX Outback Mini XP Evo Van a reliable performer in both indoor and outdoor trail environments.
What makes the 2-speed gearbox in the FTX Outback Mini XP Van unique?
Unlike many 1/18 scale crawlers, the FTX FTX5483MG Evo Van features a servo-operated 2-speed transmission that allows users to toggle between ultra-low gear for precision crawling and a higher gear for trail cruising. The first gear offers a final drive ratio of 98:1, delivering super slow crawling performance ideal for technical terrain. When switched to second gear, the ratio shifts to 24.5:1, enabling faster movement across flat surfaces. This dual-mode capability ensures that the FTX Outback Mini XP Van adapts to different driving conditions without compromising control or torque.
Why is the aluminium chassis in the FTX 1/18 Van crawler a game changer?
The aluminium rail chassis in the FTX FTX5483MG Outback Mini XP Evo Van provides a rigid and lightweight foundation that enhances durability and handling. Unlike plastic alternatives, aluminium resists flexing under load, maintaining consistent geometry during aggressive crawling sessions. This structural integrity is further supported by a low centre of gravity layout, which positions the motor and key components closer to the ground. The result is a crawler that feels planted and predictable, even when navigating sharp inclines or uneven terrain. For users seeking a robust platform with upgrade potential, the aluminium chassis is a standout feature.
How does the clipless body mount improve usability on the FTX Outback Evo Van?
The FTX Outback Evo Van introduces a clipless body mounting system that eliminates the need for traditional body pins. This design streamlines access to internal components, allowing users to remove and reattach the body quickly and securely. Whether adjusting electronics or swapping batteries, the clipless mount saves time and reduces wear on body panels. Additionally, the 1.2mm thick painted lexan body includes moulded scale accessories and clear windows, enhancing realism without sacrificing durability. This combination of functional design and aesthetic detail makes the FTX Outback Mini XP Van both practical and visually compelling.
What electronics and lighting features enhance the FTX Outback Mini XP Van experience?
Equipped with a new 4-channel ESC/RX system, the FTX Outback Mini XP Van offers smooth throttle response and full control over its integrated LED light system. The lights are operated directly from the transmitter, allowing users to toggle functions based on driving conditions or personal preference. Water-resistant electronics ensure that the crawler remains operational in damp environments, while the oversized 130 brushed motor delivers consistent torque and extended run times of up to 45 minutes. These features combine to create a reliable and immersive driving experience, whether on indoor courses or outdoor trails.
Why is the steering system in the FTX Outback Mini XP Van ideal for tight spaces?
The FTX 1/18 Van crawler features a chassis-mounted servo paired with a panhard bar steering setup, enabling a tight turning radius of just 80cm. This configuration allows for precise maneuvering in confined areas, making the crawler suitable for technical indoor layouts and narrow outdoor paths. The steering angle reaches up to 45 degrees, providing sharp directional changes without compromising stability. Combined with bead lock wheels and oversized all-terrain tyres, the steering system ensures that the FTX Outback Mini XP Van remains agile and responsive across a variety of surfaces.
Is the FTX Outback Mini XP Van suitable for long sessions and future upgrades?
With a 7.4V 2S 600mAh Li-Po battery and USB charger included, the FTX Outback Mini XP Evo Van supports extended run times that allow users to enjoy uninterrupted crawling sessions. The internal metal gears are designed to accommodate future motor upgrades, including 180, 240, or 270 size brushed motors, without compromising drivetrain integrity. This forward-compatible design ensures that the FTX FTX5483MG remains a viable platform for both beginners and experienced hobbyists looking to expand performance over time.
