Key Features
- 300A Continuous / 2000A Peak Current Rating — This ESC is built to handle extreme current loads that would overwhelm lesser controllers. The 300A continuous rating ensures sustained performance without thermal shutdown, whilst the 2000A peak capability provides explosive acceleration and crawling power exactly when you need it most. For large-scale RC vehicles pulling heavy loads or tackling steep inclines, this headroom is absolutely critical to prevent voltage sag and performance loss.
- Sensored 70125 SD Brushless Motor at 560kV — The fully sensored design delivers ultra-smooth throttle response even at low RPMs, giving you precise control during technical rock crawling or slow-speed maneuvering. The 560kV rating is specifically tuned for 8-12S LiPo batteries, providing the optimal speed range for large-scale trucks and crawlers. Sensored operation means the motor 'knows' rotor position, enabling smooth starting, realistic acceleration curves, and reduced cogging compared to sensorless alternatives.
- IP-67 Waterproof and Dustproof Protection — Both the motor and ESC feature comprehensive waterproofing that exceeds typical RC standards. This IP-67 rating guarantees excellent protection against moisture and dust ingress, allowing you to drive with confidence through muddy, sandy, icy, snowy, and water-crossing conditions without fear of electrical damage. Your investment is protected against the harsh realities of outdoor RC driving in British weather.
- Adjustable BEC with Multiple Voltage Outputs — The onboard Battery Elimination Circuit (BEC) is switchable between 6V, 7.4V, and 8.4V outputs, each capable of supplying 10A continuously with peaks up to 25A. This flexibility means you can power servo systems with different voltage requirements from a single battery pack, eliminating the need for external BEC modules or separate receiver batteries in most applications.
- Advanced Sensored Cable Interface — The MAX4 HV ESC features Hobbywing's proprietary new sensored cable interface design, which works at the highest waterproof protection level (IP67) when paired with Hobbywing motors like this 70125 SD. The system also maintains compatibility with standard sensored interfaces found on other quality motors, giving you flexibility if you ever want to experiment with different motor options.
- Ultra-High Motor Efficiency — Up to 90% — Hobbywing's engineering delivers exceptional efficiency in the 70125 SD motor, with efficiency ratings reaching up to 90%. This translates directly to less heat generation, longer runtime from each battery charge, cooler-running components with extended lifespan, and more of your battery's energy going into propulsion rather than being wasted as heat. This efficiency advantage compounds over hundreds of charge cycles, saving you money in the long term.
- Modular Motor Design for Easy Maintenance — The 70125 SD motor features a practical modular detachable structure that makes disassembly, inspection, and maintenance straightforward for even intermediate RC builders. You can easily access bearing surfaces, inspect copper windings, and replace wear items without specialist tools. This design philosophy directly extends motor lifespan and keeps maintenance costs manageable.
- Premium Materials and Precision Engineering — Every component is manufactured from carefully selected materials: the motor casing and bearing surfaces use high-quality steel laminations, the rotor is explosion-proof design for safety under extreme load, copper windings use high-temperature-resistance wire rated for sustained high-current operation, and the alloy shaft is manufactured to tight tolerances for reliability. CNC-milled aluminium components provide excellent heat dissipation and structural rigidity.
- Programmable ESC with Multiple Options — The MAX4 HV supports multiple programming methods including LED programming box, OTA Bluetooth module connectivity, and LCD program box options. This means you can fine-tune throttle curves, acceleration profiles, braking response, and other parameters to match your driving style and track conditions without requiring a computer.
- Real-Time Telemetry and Data Recording — Advanced monitoring capability allows you to track critical performance data including cell voltage, current draw, temperature, and operational statistics. This information is invaluable for diagnosing issues, optimizing battery management, and understanding your model's behaviour across different conditions.
Technical Performance
The Hobbywing EZRun MAX4 HV combo represents a significant step forward in large-scale RC power system engineering. At the heart of this system is the 70125 SD sensored motor, a substantial unit measuring 70mm in diameter and 125mm in length with an 8mm shaft designed to accept standard 1/5th scale pinions. Weighing 1,995 grams, this is a serious piece of engineering—not a lightweight toy. The motor's 560kV rating has been specifically calculated to deliver peak performance when powered by 8-12S LiPo battery packs, which translates to 29.6V to 44.4V nominal voltage. This voltage range produces speed capabilities suitable for both high-speed running and technical crawling depending on gearing choices.
The MAX4 HV ESC itself measures 125mm × 85mm × 61.7mm and weighs approximately 775.4g—substantial dimensions reflecting its robust construction and thermal management capabilities. The 300A continuous current rating represents genuine measured capability, not inflated marketing numbers. This rating means you can sustain hard acceleration, climbing, or high-speed running indefinitely without thermal throttling. The 2000A peak rating provides the explosive torque multiplication needed for rock crawling, launching, or powering through obstacles. The ESC's advanced power stage uses premium MOSFETs and driver circuitry designed to minimise voltage drop and switching losses, maintaining voltage stability even under extreme current demands that would cause voltage sag on inferior controllers.
No-load current draw of 3.6A is remarkably low for a motor of this displacement, indicating efficient rotor design and quality bearing surfaces. The four-pole motor design creates smooth commutation at all RPM ranges, with sensored operation ensuring perfect timing regardless of load conditions. The motor casing incorporates Hobbywing's innovative heat dissipation structure, a combination of internal fin design and external cooling surfaces that actively transfers motor-generated heat away from critical components. Combined with the 90% efficiency figure, this means the motor runs significantly cooler than competing designs, protecting magnet strength and extending copper wire life.
The IP-67 waterproof rating deserves particular emphasis for UK drivers contending with wet British climate and muddy terrain. This rating certifies that the system remains fully operational after immersion in up to 1 metre of water for 30 minutes, and continuous dustproof protection against fine particulates. Both the motor and ESC feature rubber-sealed connectors, fully potted electronics, and covered control elements that prevent water and mud ingress. This protection means you can confidently drive through water crossings, muddy woodland tracks, and rain without the paranoia that typically accompanies wet-weather RC driving.

- Is the Hobbywing MAX4 HV combo suitable for beginners in RC? — This combo is not recommended for absolute beginners to RC hobbying. The 70125 SD motor and 300A ESC represent professional-grade performance equipment designed for experienced drivers who understand large-scale brushless systems, proper LiPo handling, and advanced maintenance. Beginners should start with smaller-scale 3S or 4S systems before progressing to this level of power and complexity. However, if you have previous RC experience and are stepping up to large-scale performance driving, this combo is an excellent choice that will serve you reliably for years.
- What battery does this combo require? — The Hobbywing EZRun MAX4 HV combo is compatible with 8S to 12S LiPo battery packs according to manufacturer specifications. An 8S pack (29.6V nominal) will provide powerful but more controlled performance, whilst 12S (44.4V nominal) delivers maximum speed and acceleration at the cost of reduced component lifespan due to electrical stress. Most users opt for 10S (37V nominal) as an excellent middle ground offering strong performance without excessive component stress. Battery capacity depends on your vehicle weight and desired runtime; 5000mAh to 10000mAh packs are typical for 1/5th scale vehicles. Always use quality branded LiPo batteries from reputable manufacturers and employ proper charging and storage procedures.
- Can I use this motor with other ESCs, or should I stick with the MAX4 HV? — Whilst the motor features Hobbywing's new proprietary sensored cable interface, it maintains compatibility with standard sensored interfaces found on quality competitors' ESCs. However, Hobbywing engineered this exact motor to work optimally with the MAX4 HV controller, with power delivery curves, sensored feedback interpretation, and thermal management all tuned for this pairing. For best results, performance, and warranty coverage, you should use these components together as intended. The motor may function with other ESCs, but you lose the perfect performance optimisation that makes this combo special.
- What is the difference between this MAX4 HV combo and other large-scale brushless systems? — Several factors distinguish the MAX4 HV combo. First, the IP-67 waterproof and dustproof certification on both motor and ESC exceeds typical standards, providing genuine all-weather capability. Second, the 300A continuous rating combined with 2000A peak capability is genuinely engineered for sustained heavy loads, not inflated marketing. Third, Hobbywing's 90% motor efficiency is exceptional, resulting in cooler running and longer component life. Fourth, the sensored design with advanced cable interface provides smooth throttle control and precise handling across the entire RPM range. Finally, the modular motor design enables practical user maintenance without specialist equipment. Competitor systems may offer similar peak numbers, but the holistic engineering quality and real-world reliability of the MAX4 HV combo justify the investment.
- Is this combo waterproof enough for water crossings and wet conditions? — Yes, the IP-67 waterproof certification specifically confirms that both the motor and ESC can withstand immersion in up to 1 metre of water for up to 30 minutes. This rating covers typical water crossings, splash hazards, and heavy rain. However, genuine waterproofing requires proper assembly and connector maintenance; ensure all battery connectors are securely seated, ESC case is fully sealed, and motor sensor cable connection is fully inserted before water use. After wet-weather running, allow components to dry completely before recharging or storing.
- How does the adjustable BEC work and what does it do? — The BEC (Battery Elimination Circuit) is a built-in voltage regulator inside the ESC that converts your high-voltage LiPo battery output (up to 44.4V on 12S) down to lower voltages suitable for your RC receiver and steering servo. The MAX4 HV's adjustable BEC offers three voltage settings: 6V (for lightweight servos or vintage equipment), 7.4V (standard modern servo voltage), and 8.4V (for high-torque servos requiring maximum voltage). The BEC can supply 10A continuously with peaks to 25A, eliminating the need for a separate receiver battery in most 1/5th scale applications. This simplification reduces wiring complexity, weight, and failure points in your power system.
- What programming options are available for the MAX4 HV ESC? — The MAX4 HV supports three programming methods. The LED programming box uses a series of LED flashes and button presses to navigate menus—a basic but functional approach. The OTA (Over-The-Air) Bluetooth module enables wireless programming directly from your smartphone or tablet, providing a modern convenient option if you already have a compatible device. The LCD program box offers a full graphical interface making complex parameter adjustments straightforward. All three methods allow you to adjust throttle curves, acceleration profiles, braking response, failsafe settings, telemetry recording, and advanced ESC parameters. Choose the programming method that best matches your technical comfort level and budget.
- What maintenance does the 70125 SD motor require? — The modular design makes maintenance accessible. After regular use, inspect the bearing surfaces for debris; the D22×D8×T7 sized bearings are standard RC bearings available from any reputable RC shop. Check that the shaft rotates freely without binding. Periodically inspect the copper windings for obvious damage, though minor discolouration is normal. Clean mud and dust from the motor casing using compressed air or a soft brush—never use solvents that could degrade bearing lubricant. The explosion-proof rotor design is robust, but inspect for obvious magnet damage after heavy crashes. Proper maintenance extends motor life from seasons to years.
- What scale vehicle does this combo suit? — The Hobbywing EZRun MAX4 HV combo is engineered specifically for 1/5th scale RC vehicles according to manufacturer specifications. This includes large-scale trucks, buggies, truggy-style vehicles, and rock crawlers. Do not attempt to fit this system to smaller-scale vehicles (1/10th, 1/8th) as the motor size, weight, and power outputs are completely incompatible. The 70mm motor diameter and 125mm length are substantial; your chassis must have adequate motor bay space and structural capability to handle the 1,995g motor weight plus 775g ESC weight.
- How hot does this motor run during extended use? — Hobbywing's 90% efficiency design results in significantly cooler running than competing motors. The innovative heat dissipation structure actively transfers generated heat away from critical components. In typical outdoor ambient temperatures, the motor casing remains warm to touch but not uncomfortably hot during sustained high-load operation. The ESC likewise generates minimal heat thanks to advanced power stage design minimising switching losses. After hard driving sessions, allow 10-15 minutes for components to cool before handling or packing away. Monitor component temperature using optional telemetry if you want precise data on thermal performance during specific driving scenarios.
