Overview

The Spektrum SPM Brushless Outrunner Motor: 5055-500kv 14-pole (Model M-SPM-1003) is a high-performance brushless motor engineered for serious RC enthusiasts and competitive flyers in the UK. This outrunner-style motor delivers reliable, efficient power for electric aircraft and larger RC models that demand precision engineering and sustained performance. Whether you're building a scale aircraft, electric aeroplane, or high-powered RC plane, this Spektrum motor from RC Model Shop provides the quality and dependability you need to take your flying experience to the next level.

Brushless motors have become the gold standard in modern RC aviation, offering superior efficiency, longer flight times, and reduced maintenance compared to traditional brushed alternatives. The 5055-500kv configuration specifically targets mid-sized to larger aircraft where you need reliable torque delivery and smooth power characteristics. This motor is ideal for builders and pilots who understand the demands of serious RC flying and want equipment they can trust in the field, at the flying club, or during competitive events.

As an authorised Spektrum retailer, RC Model Shop stocks genuine Spektrum brushless motors designed to international standards. The 5055-500kv outrunner motor represents the quality engineering you'd expect from Spektrum, a brand recognised worldwide for precision RC electronics and motors. Whether you're replacing a worn motor, building a new aircraft project, or upgrading an existing setup, this brushless outrunner delivers the performance characteristics that experienced RC pilots demand.

Key Features

  • Brushless Outrunner Design — The outrunner configuration places the rotating bell outside the stationary armature, which is particularly effective for direct-drive applications common in larger RC aircraft. This design delivers high torque at lower RPM ranges, making it perfect for propeller-driven aircraft where you need strong, consistent thrust without excessive speed.
  • 500kv Rating — The 500kv specification means this motor produces 500 revolutions per minute for each volt of input power applied. This makes it ideal for larger propellers and aircraft requiring sustained power delivery rather than extreme RPM, offering a balanced approach to power and efficiency that many serious builders prefer.
  • 14-Pole Motor — The 14-pole construction provides smoother power delivery and more consistent torque characteristics throughout the RPM range compared to lower pole-count motors. This engineering approach results in more refined performance, particularly noticeable during acceleration, cruise, and landing phases of flight.
  • 5055 Size — The physical dimensions of this motor (5055mm frame size) place it in the category suitable for mid-sized to large aircraft, giving you a motor robust enough for serious flying whilst remaining efficient and reliable across extended flight sessions.
  • Spektrum Quality Engineering — As a genuine Spektrum motor, this unit benefits from rigorous manufacturing standards, quality control testing, and the backing of a manufacturer recognised throughout the RC community for producing dependable, long-lasting components that perform consistently.

Technical Performance

The Spektrum 5055-500kv brushless outrunner motor represents a carefully engineered solution for larger RC aircraft and serious flying applications. With its 500kv rating and 14-pole design, this motor excels at providing smooth, predictable power delivery across the full operating range. The outrunner configuration is particularly well-suited to direct-drive setups where propeller efficiency is paramount, making it an excellent choice for scale aircraft, electric trainers, and performance fliers seeking reliability. The motor's design philosophy focuses on torque and control rather than extreme speed, which translates to longer flight times, better prop response, and more natural aircraft handling characteristics that experienced pilots appreciate. Built to Spektrum's exacting standards, this brushless motor delivers the efficiency gains that modern RC flying demands—reduced heat generation, minimal maintenance requirements, and consistent performance across multiple flight sessions. The construction quality ensures reliable operation whether you're flying locally at your RC field, participating in organised events, or building a showcase scale model aircraft.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does 500kv mean on this brushless motor? — The kv rating (500kv) indicates that the motor will turn 500 revolutions per minute for each volt of electrical power supplied. This means on a typical 3-cell LiPo battery (11.1 volts), you'd see approximately 5,500 RPM under no-load conditions. This lower kv rating is specifically chosen for larger aircraft that need strong torque delivery rather than extremely high speeds.
  • Is the 5055-500kv motor suitable for beginner RC pilots? — This motor is best suited for intermediate to advanced RC pilots and builders who have experience with brushless systems, motor selection, and aircraft construction. Beginners might find more suitable options in smaller, ready-to-fly aircraft packages, though those with building experience and existing ESC and battery equipment will find this motor straightforward to install and use.
  • What battery type does this motor require? — This brushless outrunner motor is compatible with LiPo (Lithium Polymer) battery packs, which are the standard power source for modern RC aircraft. The specific battery voltage and capacity depend on your aircraft design, weight, and desired flight characteristics. Most applications use 2S, 3S, or 4S LiPo batteries depending on the motor's rated power handling and your propeller selection.
  • Do I need a special ESC for this motor? — Yes, this brushless motor requires a brushless-capable Electronic Speed Controller (ESC). The ESC must be rated for the battery voltage you plan to use and have sufficient current capacity for your specific application. Many modern ESCs designed for aircraft use will work well with this 5055-500kv motor, but you should verify compatibility before purchase.
  • What makes the 14-pole design better than other pole counts? — The 14-pole configuration provides smoother commutation and more consistent torque delivery compared to motors with fewer poles. This results in more refined acceleration, better throttle response, and less cogging sensation during operation. For aircraft applications, this translates to better handling characteristics and more natural control feel.
  • How does this outrunner compare to inrunner motors? — Outrunner motors like this 5055 are ideal for direct-drive applications common in larger RC aircraft, whilst inrunner motors typically require gearing for similar applications. The outrunner configuration delivers higher torque at lower speeds, making it perfect for propeller-driven aircraft where you want strong, consistent thrust.
  • What type of aircraft is this motor best for? — The 5055-500kv motor is well-suited for mid-sized to large electric aircraft, scale models, trainers, and performance fliers. Its torque-oriented characteristics make it excellent for heavier aircraft that benefit from strong low-end power rather than extreme RPM. Many builders choose this motor for 1.2m to 1.5m+ aircraft or larger trainer-style models.
