Technical Performance
The Tamiya TAM47501 is built on engineering principles developed for competitive on-road RC racing, delivering genuine performance backed by precision manufacturing and quality materials throughout. The MB-01 chassis frame features a bathtub-style design that provides excellent structural rigidity whilst maintaining a low centre of gravity for balanced, predictable handling. The four-wheel double wishbone suspension, fitted as standard with friction dampers and symmetrical arm geometry, absorbs track imperfections and maintains consistent contact patch during high-speed cornering, acceleration and braking sequences. The 4-bevel differential gear system with a 5.83:1 gear ratio (using the kit's standard 29T pinion) delivers responsive acceleration whilst maintaining controllable speed on most track surfaces, and the system is fully compatible with TT-02 Hop-Up Option differentials, opening upgrade pathways for UK RC racers seeking performance enhancements. The 540-type brushed motor provides reliable, predictable power delivery with excellent mid-range torque characteristics, ideal for drivers developing their skills on on-road circuits. The included electronic speed controller handles throttle and braking inputs with precision, supporting regenerative braking for extended runtime and offering adjustment flexibility for different driving styles and track conditions. The polycarbonate body is lightweight yet durable enough to withstand minor impacts during recreational driving and club racing, whilst the pre-painted white finish eliminates the need for custom painting, ensuring you can begin driving immediately. With dimensions of 385mm length, 168mm width and 132mm height, the 225mm wheelbase configuration provides the ideal balance between manoeuvrability and stability for on-road circuits. The model accepts standard 7.2-7.4 volt battery packs, compatible with most UK RC charging infrastructure, and typical runtime on a fully charged sport pack ranges from 15-25 minutes depending on driving style and battery capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Tamiya Alfa Giulia Sprint GTA Club Racer suitable for RC beginners? — Yes, absolutely. The TAM47501 features Skill Level 2 assembly complexity, meaning it is designed for builders with some basic RC knowledge but not advanced experience. The unitised motor mount, final gears and suspension components dramatically simplify assembly compared to traditional full-chassis kits, and the pre-painted body eliminates the need for painting expertise. If you've built or owned an RC car previously, this kit will feel very manageable. For complete newcomers, Tamiya offers excellent illustrated manuals and specialist YouTube guides are widely available from UK RC retailers and enthusiasts.
- What battery does the TAM47501 need, and how long does it run? — The Tamiya Alfa Giulia Sprint requires a 7.2-7.4 volt rechargeable battery pack, which you'll need to purchase separately. The kit includes the electronic speed controller but not the battery itself. Typical battery packs range from 1800mAh to 5000mAh capacity, with sport-oriented 3000mAh packs offering a good balance between weight, performance and runtime. Runtime typically ranges from 15-25 minutes per charge depending on your driving style, battery capacity and track conditions. You'll also need a compatible charger capable of handling either NiMH or LiPo chemistry, depending on which battery type you choose.
- Can I modify the wheelbase or convert between front and rear-wheel drive? — Yes, this is one of the MB-01 chassis's greatest strengths. Without removing the battery pack, motor or R/C equipment from the centre frame, you can change the attachment directions of the final gears and steering linkage to switch between front and rear-wheel drive configurations. The motor position can also be adjusted between low and high positions for rear-wheel drive layouts. Additionally, the chassis supports three different wheelbase options, allowing you to experiment with handling characteristics suited to your driving preferences and track conditions.
- How does the TAM47501 compare to other MB-01 chassis models available in the UK? — Tamiya manufactures several models on the MB-01 platform, including the 1000 TCR Berlina Corse, Opel Kadett GT/E, Citroën DS, Mini Cooper Racing and VW Golf II GTI 16V. All share the same chassis engineering and suspension design, but each offers distinctly different body styling reflecting different automotive eras and racing categories. The Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA stands out for its 1960s racing heritage and lightweight, purposeful design, whilst others represent different motorsport traditions. Your choice should be driven by personal preference for the vehicle's styling and historical significance rather than performance differences, as they perform equivalently on the same chassis platform.
- What is the 5.83:1 gear ratio, and can I change it? — The gear ratio determines the relationship between motor revolutions and wheel revolutions, directly affecting acceleration and top speed. A 5.83:1 ratio means the wheels turn 5.83 times slower than the motor, providing quick acceleration but moderate top speed—ideal for responsive on-road driving and club racing. The ratio is set using a 29T pinion gear (the small gear on the motor), and you can change it by installing different pinion sizes: smaller pinions increase top speed but reduce acceleration, whilst larger pinions improve acceleration at the cost of lower maximum speed. Replacement pinion gears are inexpensive and readily available from UK RC retailers.
- Is the TAM47501 waterproof or suitable for wet conditions? — The Tamiya MB-01 chassis and included electronics are not waterproof, and this model is designed exclusively for dry, on-road use on smooth surfaces such as club tracks, car parks and paved circuits. Water immersion will damage the motor, ESC, servo and battery, potentially causing permanent failure and safety hazards. Always operate this model in dry conditions and avoid puddles, wet grass or damp environments. If you require a waterproof RC car for wet conditions or off-road use, Tamiya and other manufacturers produce dedicated waterproof models specifically engineered for such applications.
- Can I upgrade the suspension with aluminium dampers? — Yes, Tamiya manufactures M-Chassis aluminium dampers that are fully compatible with the MB-01's double wishbone suspension. Factory-fitted friction dampers work reliably for most driving applications, but upgrading to aluminium dampers allows you to adjust damping rates more precisely, fine-tuning the car's handling to your preferences. This is an optional upgrade suitable for experienced tuners and competitive drivers seeking performance optimisation, rather than a necessity for recreational driving.
- What radio control system does the TAM47501 work with? — The kit requires a 2-channel radio control system (transmitter and receiver) purchased separately. Tamiya does not include a radio system in their assembly kits. Most modern 2-channel systems operate on 2.4GHz frequency using FHSS (Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum) protocols, offering interference-free operation and widespread compatibility across RC brands. Popular options available in the UK include Futaba, Spektrum and Traxxas systems, though many budget options from accessory manufacturers like Etronix and Modelsport also perform reliably for club-level racing and recreational driving.
- How long does assembly typically take? — Assembly time varies depending on your experience level and available tools, but most builders complete the TAM47501 in 3-6 hours. The unitised motor mount, final gears and suspension components significantly reduce assembly time compared to traditional kits requiring individual component installation. Experienced builders often complete the model in 2-3 hours, whilst those building their first Tamiya kit or lacking previous RC experience may require 6-8 hours. The comprehensive illustrated manual guides you through every step, and specialist online video tutorials from UK retailers provide visual support for any sections you find unclear.
