Overview

The SPM Avian 800Kv Outrunner Brushless Motor M-SPM-1012 is a high-performance brushless motor designed for RC aircraft enthusiasts seeking reliable, efficient power delivery. Manufactured by Spektrum, a globally recognised leader in RC electronics and power systems, this outrunner motor represents a perfect balance between power output and operational efficiency. Whether you are building a mid-size RC aeroplane, upgrading an existing aircraft, or exploring the world of brushless RC flight for the first time, this 800Kv motor offers the performance characteristics needed for smooth, controllable flight across a variety of aircraft configurations.

The 800Kv rating makes this motor particularly versatile for intermediate to advanced RC pilots in the UK and worldwide. Outrunner brushless motors are prized in the RC community for their ability to deliver high torque at lower speeds whilst maintaining excellent efficiency, making them ideal for aircraft that demand sustained thrust and smooth power delivery. The Avian series represents Spektrum's commitment to quality engineering, and this specific model is engineered to provide years of reliable service when properly maintained and paired with compatible electronic speed controllers (ESCs) and power systems.

This motor is part of Spektrum's comprehensive range of brushless outrunner motors, which includes options across different Kv ratings and physical sizes to suit everything from small parkflyer aircraft to larger mid-size and giant scale models. The 800Kv rating sits in the mid-range sweet spot, offering excellent performance potential for most general-purpose RC aircraft applications.

Key Features

  • Brushless Outrunner Design — The brushless outrunner configuration means the motor's external bell rotates around a fixed internal shaft, a design that delivers superior efficiency compared to brushed motors and provides significantly longer service life due to the absence of carbon brushes that wear over time. This translates to lower maintenance requirements and more consistent performance throughout the motor's operational lifespan.
  • 800Kv Rating — The 800Kv specification indicates that the motor will rotate 800 revolutions per minute for every volt of electrical input, making it ideal for mid-size RC aircraft applications where moderate speed and strong torque characteristics are desired. This Kv rating is neither excessively high nor excessively low, positioning it as a versatile choice for general-purpose flying.
  • Spektrum Quality Engineering — As a Spektrum product, this motor benefits from the manufacturer's decades of experience in RC electronics and power systems. Spektrum components are recognised worldwide for their reliability, performance, and compatibility with complementary Spektrum systems and accessories available to UK RC enthusiasts.
  • Sensorless Operation — This motor operates without internal hall-effect sensors, which simplifies the motor construction, reduces weight, and lowers manufacturing costs without compromising performance in most RC aircraft applications where sensorless operation is standard and proven.
  • 14-Pole Configuration — The 14-pole motor design provides smooth power delivery and excellent acceleration characteristics, ensuring responsive throttle control and consistent performance across the flight envelope whether you are performing gentle manoeuvres or more aggressive aerobatic flying.

Technical Performance

The Avian 800Kv outrunner brushless motor delivers excellent performance credentials for serious RC aircraft builders and pilots. The motor's construction utilises high-quality materials and precision engineering typical of Spektrum's product range, ensuring smooth operation and longevity even under demanding flight conditions. At 800Kv, this motor operates optimally when paired with appropriate multi-cell lithium polymer (LiPo) battery packs and a compatible brushless electronic speed controller rated for your specific aircraft power requirements. The 14-pole motor design contributes to the smooth power characteristics that experienced RC pilots appreciate, reducing vibration and providing predictable throttle response during all phases of flight. The sensorless brushless design means this motor can be operated with any quality brushless ESC that supports sensorless motor operation, giving you flexibility in choosing complementary electronics from Spektrum's range or other recognised manufacturers. The motor's compact physical dimensions and lightweight construction make it suitable for integration into mid-size RC aircraft where weight management and efficient space utilisation are important design considerations. When properly matched with a suitable LiPo battery pack (typically 3S to 4S configurations depending on your aircraft design), this motor will deliver reliable, consistent performance flight after flight.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What aircraft type is the SPM Avian 800Kv motor suitable for? — This 800Kv outrunner motor is designed for mid-size RC aircraft applications including general-purpose RC aeroplanes, sport aircraft, and models where moderate speed combined with good torque characteristics is desired. The motor's performance characteristics make it particularly well-suited to aircraft designs that prioritise stable flight characteristics and efficient power delivery over maximum speed performance.
  • What battery does the 800Kv Avian motor need? — The SPM Avian 800Kv motor is compatible with multi-cell lithium polymer (LiPo) battery packs, with 3S (11.1V) and 4S (14.8V) configurations being the most common choices depending on your specific aircraft design and performance requirements. Always consult your aircraft manufacturer's specifications or designer's recommendations when selecting battery voltage to ensure compatibility with the airframe structure and motor mounting system.
  • Can I use this motor with any brushless ESC? — This sensorless brushless motor is compatible with any quality electronic speed controller designed to operate sensorless brushless motors. Spektrum offers several brushless ESCs specifically tested and recommended for compatibility with their motors, ensuring optimal performance and reliability. When selecting an ESC from any manufacturer, verify that it supports sensorless operation and that its continuous current rating meets or exceeds your aircraft's predicted power demand.
  • What makes brushless motors better than brushed motors for RC aircraft? — Brushless motors eliminate the carbon brushes found in brushed designs, which means they require no maintenance, last significantly longer, operate more efficiently, and produce smoother power delivery with less vibration. For RC aircraft applications, brushless motors provide superior performance, better energy efficiency from your battery, and more consistent throttle response throughout the flight.
  • Is the 800Kv rating high or low? — At 800Kv, this motor is considered moderate on the Kv spectrum. Lower Kv motors (such as 500-600Kv) are suited to applications requiring high torque and lower speed, while higher Kv motors (1200Kv and above) are designed for maximum speed applications. The 800Kv rating provides an excellent balance between torque and speed, making it versatile for a wide range of mid-size RC aircraft designs.
  • Is the Spektrum Avian 800Kv motor suitable for beginners? — Whilst this is a quality motor from a recognised manufacturer, it is best suited to RC aircraft builders with intermediate to advanced experience. Success with this motor requires proper selection of complementary components (ESC, battery, airframe), correct installation practices, and understanding of RC aircraft power system principles. Beginners should consider starting with complete ready-to-run RC aircraft packages before undertaking custom-build projects with individual motor components.
