This is a vehicle that rewards careful assembly and delivers genuine off-road capability on dirt tracks, gravel paths, sand courses and challenging terrain.
The shaft-driven 4WD system ensures consistent traction and stability whether you're cornering aggressively or powering through rough ground, whilst the independent double wishbone suspension with CVA oil dampers provides excellent bump absorption and predictable handling characteristics. For anyone seeking a traditional yet capable electric RC buggy that combines Tamiya's proven design heritage with modern performance standards, the Hotshot II TAM58737 stands as an excellent investment in long-term enjoyment and reliability.
Key Features
- Shaft-Driven 4WD Chassis — The four-wheel drive system with shaft transmission delivers power to all four wheels simultaneously, ensuring consistent traction across loose and challenging terrain whilst maintaining stability during high-speed cornering and aggressive acceleration. This drivetrain configuration is proven across decades of RC racing and bashing, providing reliable performance in all conditions.
- Sealed Gearboxes Front and Rear — Both front and rear gearboxes feature sealed construction to keep out dirt, sand and moisture that would otherwise compromise durability and performance. The sealed design extends component lifespan significantly, particularly when running in dusty or sandy environments typical of off-road RC car UK usage.
- 3-Bevel Differential Gears — Each sealed gearbox houses a 3-bevel differential that allows smooth, controlled cornering by enabling the inner and outer wheels to rotate at different speeds when turning. This ensures the buggy maintains traction throughout corners without binding or skipping, delivering predictable handling.
- CVA Oil Dampers (Triple Configuration) — The suspension system employs three CVA oil dampers—one mounted at the front and two mounted at the rear—that absorb impacts from uneven terrain and reduce chassis bounce. Oil-filled dampers provide consistent damping performance across a range of driving speeds and surfaces, preventing the suspension from becoming too stiff or too soft.
- Front Stabiliser Bar — An anti-roll bar is fitted at the front to reduce chassis roll during aggressive cornering and high-speed directional changes. This component works in concert with the CVA dampers to maintain a level ride plane, improving grip consistency and driver confidence through technical sections.
- 4-Wheel Independent Double Wishbone Suspension — Each wheel is controlled by independently articulating upper and lower wishbone arms, allowing maximum suspension travel and flexibility whilst maintaining precise wheel alignment throughout the vehicle's movement range. This suspension geometry is fundamental to the Hotshot II's off-road capability and ensures each wheel can react independently to terrain irregularities.
- Pre-Painted Polycarbonate Body — The sleek wedge-shaped body is moulded from tough polycarbonate and arrives pre-painted in glossy black with a pre-cut design ready for mounting. Polycarbonate construction provides excellent impact resistance and durability whilst maintaining a lightweight profile compared to older plastic materials, crucial for responsive handling and acceleration.
- Pre-Painted Rear Wing — Matching the body's black finish, the polycarbonate rear wing is also pre-painted and pre-cut, providing aerodynamic downforce at the rear and enhancing the vehicle's racy appearance. The included orange and yellow decal stickers complete the classic Hotshot II colour scheme instantly.
- ABS Monocoque Frame — The main chassis frame is constructed from impact-resistant ABS plastic in a monocoque design that distributes stress evenly across the structure. Monocoque construction provides excellent rigidity and impact resistance without excessive weight, protecting components during hard crashes and rough terrain contact.
- Underguard Protection — An underguard shields the underside of the chassis against rocks, roots, rough terrain and debris, protecting critical drivetrain components and the frame bottom from damage. This component is essential for longevity when running regularly on demanding off-road surfaces.
- Semi-Pneumatic Oval Block Tyres — Mounted on the large-diameter dish wheels, semi-pneumatic oval block and pin spike hybrid tyres provide exceptional grip on loose terrain including dirt, gravel, sand and grass. The hybrid tread pattern combines the advantages of block tread for structured surfaces with pin spikes for maximum bite in soft conditions.
- Differential Tyre Sizing — The front tyres measure 31mm width by 88mm diameter, whilst the rear tyres are wider at 38mm by 88mm diameter. This staggered sizing is purposeful engineering that optimises weight distribution, traction characteristics and overall handling balance specific to buggy dynamics.
- White Dish Design Wheels — The one-piece nylon wheels feature a distinctive dish profile that complements the Hotshot II's classic aesthetic whilst providing excellent strength and durability. The white finish provides visual contrast with the body and tyres, creating an attractive finished appearance.
- Type 540 Motor — The included brushed electric motor is a standard 540-sized unit that delivers predictable power delivery and straightforward operation. The 540 motor format is industry-standard for 1/10 scale electric RC cars, making it simple to understand performance characteristics and access replacement components if needed.
- Selectable Gear Ratios — Four optional gear ratio configurations (10.04:1, 8.70:1, 8.16:1, and 7.68:1) allow tuning of the buggy's acceleration and top speed characteristics to match your driving style and terrain. Lower ratios favour speed on open surfaces, whilst higher ratios provide stronger acceleration for technical courses with frequent obstacles.
- 2-Piece Steering Tie-Rod — The front steering linkage employs a two-piece tie-rod design that provides responsive directional control whilst maintaining structural integrity under aggressive cornering loads. This design simplifies adjustment and maintenance of the steering geometry.
Technical Performance
The Tamiya Hotshot II TAM58737 is engineered to deliver genuine off-road performance through a combination of proven mechanical systems and quality materials. The shaft-driven 4WD transmission ensures power reaches all four wheels consistently, whilst the sealed front and rear gearboxes protect internal components from the sand, dirt and moisture encountered during outdoor RC buggy UK operation. Each gearbox houses a differential system that allows smooth cornering without binding, critical for maintaining speed through technical sections. The suspension architecture featuring independent double wishbone arms at all four corners provides exceptional articulation and terrain conformity. The three CVA oil dampers—one front and two rear—deliver consistent damping across varying driving conditions, whilst the front stabiliser reduces body roll during aggressive cornering. The ABS monocoque frame provides structural rigidity and impact protection without excessive weight, crucial for responsive acceleration and nimble handling characteristics. The polycarbonate body and rear wing combination maintains a lightweight profile whilst offering excellent durability against impact damage typical of off-road use. Semi-pneumatic oval block tyres mounted on wide dish wheels provide exceptional grip across loose terrain. The Type 540 brushed motor delivers straightforward, reliable power delivery, whilst the selectable gear ratio system (10.04:1, 8.70:1, 8.16:1, 7.68:1) allows you to fine-tune acceleration and speed characteristics to your specific driving conditions and terrain requirements. Tread dimensions of 205mm front and 200mm rear provide a wide, stable stance that enhances cornering stability and traction distribution. The complete kit measures 390mm in length, 235mm in width and 160mm in height with a 265mm wheelbase, creating a compact platform ideal for agile off-road handling through technical courses and tight terrain features.
