Overview

The Tamiya Mercedes-Benz Actros 1851 GigaSpace 1/14 Scale RC Truck represents the pinnacle of scale truck modelling, bringing authentic German engineering to your RC collection. This award-winning 2012 Truck of the Year model is the flagship of Daimler, the world's leading truck manufacturer, and Tamiya has faithfully recreated every detail in this impressive 1/14 scale RC assembly kit. Whether you're an experienced RC enthusiast looking for a challenging build project or a dedicated truck fan seeking museum-quality authenticity, this single axle drive tractor unit delivers professional-grade realism that rivals much more expensive ready-to-run RC cars and trucks available in the UK market.

The Actros 1851 GigaSpace is engineered for serious hobbyists who appreciate precision engineering and authentic detail. Real-world inspiration comes from the full-size truck's 12.8-litre 6-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 510 horsepower, used for long-distance haulage, heavy duty distribution and construction work across Europe. Every aspect of this RC model—from the highly detailed interior to the auxiliary equipment such as air tanks—has been designed to capture that professional truck aesthetic that makes scale haulage modelling such a rewarding hobby in the UK and beyond.

This is not a plug-and-play ready-to-run RC truck; it's a comprehensive assembly kit designed for Skill Level 3 builders. The challenge of assembly is part of the appeal, allowing you to develop genuine understanding of RC mechanics whilst creating a museum-quality display piece that can also be driven and enjoyed. With the option to add separately-available trailers via the integrated coupler, you can create impressive combinations exceeding one metre in length, making this one of the most versatile and expandable RC truck platforms available.

Technical Performance

The Tamiya Actros 1851 GigaSpace delivers impressive technical specifications that justify its professional-level complexity. At the heart of this RC truck sits a Type RS540 brushed motor providing smooth, reliable power delivery characteristic of Tamiya's proven motor designs. The 3-speed transmission with electronically-selectable gears (operated from your transmitter) allows real-time adjustment between three distinct gear ratios, enabling you to optimise performance whether you're hauling on motorway-style runs or navigating challenging terrain. The comprehensive suspension system features front and rear leaf springs paired with aluminium friction dampers containing internal coil springs, delivering the kind of sophisticated suspension geometry you'll find on genuine competition RC vehicles. Built-in 3-bevel differential gearing ensures smooth cornering without binding, whilst the float-mounted die-cast front axle and reinforced resin rear axle provide an excellent balance between weight distribution and durability. The aluminium side channel ladder frame chassis combined with resin cross members creates a platform that's genuinely rigid yet manageable in weight, ensuring reliable performance throughout extended driving sessions. With a wheelbase of 272mm, front tread of 156mm and rear tread of 138mm (accommodating double rear tyres), the chassis geometry delivers stable on-road handling that faithfully represents the full-size Actros's proportions. The RS540 motor works seamlessly with the transmission system, and whilst you'll need to source your own 7.2V battery pack and electronic speed controller, this flexibility allows you to customise the power characteristics to match your preferred driving style and local regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Tamiya Actros 1851 GigaSpace suitable for beginners to RC modelling? — This kit is rated as Skill Level 3, which means it's designed for experienced builders rather than complete beginners. The assembly process requires good understanding of RC mechanics, and you'll need to source several additional components (battery, ESC, radio gear) before it can operate. However, if you're new to RC but have patience and attention to detail, the comprehensive assembly process can be an excellent learning experience. We'd recommend starting with a Skill Level 1 or 2 model if you're completely new to the hobby.
  • What battery does the Tamiya Actros 1851 GigaSpace need? — This kit requires a 7.2V battery pack, which is not included in the UK version. The Japan-market version (Item 56334) includes a 7.2V battery pack and charger, but the UK market TAM56335 requires you to source these separately. You'll also need four R6/AA/UM3 batteries to power your transmitter. We stock compatible battery solutions and can advise on the best options for your setup.
  • Does this RC truck come ready to run? — No, this is an assembly kit (un-assembled construction type) that requires full assembly from component parts. You'll also need to purchase a 7.2V battery pack, ESC, and 4-channel radio gear separately. The Japan-market version (56334) includes more components, but the UK version (56335) requires these to be sourced separately. This isn't a plug-and-play ready-to-run RC truck; it's a comprehensive build project for enthusiasts.
  • What is the difference between the Tamiya Actros 1851 GigaSpace and other Tamiya 1/14 scale trucks? — The Actros 1851 is a single axle rear-wheel drive tractor unit, whereas many other Tamiya trucks in the 1/14 range feature different axle configurations (such as the 6x4 Actros 3363 or the Scania models with multiple rear axles). The Actros 1851 offers a sleeker profile with the iconic GigaSpace cabin design and represents a specific real-world truck type. Its single axle drive makes it lighter and more agile than multi-axle models, whilst maintaining authentic proportions. Choose based on which real truck appeals to you and your intended use.
  • Can I add trailers to this RC truck? — Yes, the Actros 1851 features an integrated coupler specifically designed to attach Tamiya's separately-available 1/14 scale semi-trailers, tank-trailers and pole-trailers. This allows you to create impressive combinations exceeding one metre in total length, transforming your single tractor unit into a complete articulated combination. Different trailer types create different weights and handling characteristics, allowing you to experience the real-world physics of hauling various loads.
  • What sound and light features does this truck have? — The model itself doesn't include integrated lights or sounds, but when paired with Tamiya's optional MFC-01 Multi-Function Control Unit, you unlock an array of features including digitally-recorded engine sounds sampled from the actual 12.8-litre turbocharged Actros engine, air horn sounds, gear shifting audio, and operational feedback for lights and vibration. Additionally, LED lights can be added separately to create functional headlights, tail lights, turn signals, brake lights and fog lamps that operate in sync with your driving inputs.
  • How long does assembly take? — This depends on your experience level and available time, but a Skill Level 3 kit typically requires 15-25 hours of careful assembly. The Actros 1851 includes numerous detail parts, the complete suspension system, transmission assembly, and bodywork fitting, so patience and methodical work are essential. First-time builders should allow extra time, and we recommend following Tamiya's detailed assembly instructions step-by-step. The assembly process is part of the enjoyment for many enthusiasts, as you gain genuine understanding of how your RC truck functions.
  • What motor does this truck use? — The Tamiya Actros 1851 GigaSpace uses a Type RS540 brushed motor, which is a proven standard in Tamiya's truck line. The RS540 provides smooth, reliable power delivery with good torque characteristics suitable for hauling applications. It's paired with the 3-speed transmission to optimise performance across different driving scenarios. The motor is front-mounted for realistic weight distribution that mimics the full-size truck's layout.
  • Is this truck waterproof? — This is not a waterproof or weather-sealed RC truck. The electronics, motor and transmission are exposed to the elements, so you should avoid deep water, heavy rain and muddy terrain. This is an on-road truck designed for dry conditions, paved surfaces and controlled environments. The detailed bodywork and interior appointments aren't designed to withstand the abuse of water play or extreme weather.
  • What's the wheelbase and will it fit in my space? — The Actros 1851 measures 458mm in length, 195mm in width and 305mm in height with a wheelbase of 272mm. This is a substantial model that requires reasonable space for driving, both indoors and outdoors. If you add a trailer via the coupler, the total length can exceed one metre. We'd recommend measuring your available space before ordering to ensure you have adequate room for operation and display.
