Overview
The Tamiya Buggy Champ 2009 1/10 2WD Off-Road RC Kit represents one of the most iconic re-releases in RC car UK history. The prominent figure of the R/C car boom was the Tamiya Racing Buggy, Rough Rider, which was first released in 1979. Tamiya is now proud to re-release this legendary model to celebrate the car's 30th year anniversary. This 2009 version, The Buggy Champ, has been carefully updated whilst maintaining the original features of the chassis such as the unique front double trailing arms and rear torsion suspension. R/C fans' hearts will definitely race when they see the nostalgic shape and relive the dynamic performance of this machine.
Whether you are a seasoned RC enthusiast or discovering the world of brushed RC buggies for the first time, the Buggy Champ offers authentic off-road performance with genuine heritage. This is not simply a reproduction—it is a thoughtfully engineered revival that respects the original design philosophy whilst incorporating modern engineering improvements. The limited re-release nature of this model makes it a highly sought-after addition to any serious RC collection. The self-assembly kit format means you will have the satisfaction of building your own ready to run RC buggy from the ground up, gaining valuable knowledge about RC car maintenance and setup in the process.
As a 1/10 scale off-road buggy, the Buggy Champ is perfectly suited for rough terrain exploration, backyard bashing, and genuine RC sport enjoyment. The inclusion of a full brushed motor and ESC means you have genuine Tamiya quality electronics built in, eliminating the need to source separate electronics elsewhere. This is a complete foundation for an exciting RC off-road experience.
Key Features
- Limited Re-Release 1/10 R/C Self-Assembly Kit — This is a limited edition re-release of a classic 1979 model, making it a special collectible item for RC enthusiasts. The self-assembly format allows builders to understand their machine thoroughly, making maintenance and upgrades straightforward. You will construct the entire buggy from component parts, learning the fundamentals of RC car building and gaining hands-on experience with suspension geometry, drivetrain assembly, and electronics integration.
- Full Ball Bearings Throughout — The use of full ball bearings on all moving components significantly reduces friction and wear compared to bushings, resulting in smoother operation, faster acceleration, and longer component lifespan. This engineering choice ensures your RC buggy will maintain its performance characteristics over extended periods of use, whilst reducing the need for constant maintenance and replacement of wear items.
- Tamiya ESC and Type 540 Brushed Motor Included — The integrated electronic speed controller and brushed motor combination provides reliable, proven performance for off-road driving. The type 540 motor is a standard specification in RC buggies and offers a good balance between torque and speed, delivering responsive acceleration and adequate top-end performance for both recreational bashing and competitive sport use. Having these components included means you can get your buggy running without additional electronics purchases.
- 2mm Thick FRP Main Chassis Plate — The 2mm fibre reinforced plastic chassis is engineered for strength and durability whilst maintaining minimal weight. This thickness provides adequate rigidity to resist flexing during aggressive driving and rough terrain impacts, preventing the kind of chassis damage that can lead to misalignment and poor handling. The FRP material offers superior strength-to-weight ratio compared to traditional plastic, ensuring your buggy remains responsive and reliable.
- Newly Designed Die-Cast Front and Rear Suspension Arms, Front Axle, and Wheel Hubs — Modern die-cast components replace older designs with improved strength and dimensional accuracy. Die-casting produces superior structural integrity with fewer voids or imperfections, ensuring suspension geometry remains consistent throughout the vehicle's operational life. The redesigned front axle and wheel hubs enhance alignment stability and reduce wear on moving parts, critical factors for maintaining consistent handling on rough off-road terrain.
- Clear Transparent Waterproof Case Protects the R/C Mechanisms — The protective waterproof case is a practical feature that shields critical electronics and mechanical components from dust, dirt, water splash, and debris encountered during off-road driving. This is particularly valuable when driving in wet conditions, sandy environments, or muddy terrain where exposure to moisture and abrasive particles could compromise component longevity. The transparent design allows you to visually inspect the protected components without removing the cover.
- Reinforced Front Uprights — The strengthened front uprights have been engineered to withstand the tremendous forces generated by jumps, rough landings, and aggressive cornering in off-road conditions. Upgraded uprights prevent bending or fracturing that could compromise steering geometry and handling accuracy, ensuring your RC buggy maintains predictable, responsive steering characteristics even after repeated hard impacts and challenging terrain driving.
- Redesigned Oil Dampers — Modern oil dampers with updated internal designs provide superior suspension control and vibration absorption compared to the original specification. These shock absorbers smooth out bumps and impacts from rough terrain, improving traction by keeping all four tyres in contact with the ground, enhancing stability during acceleration and cornering, and reducing the shock transmitted through the chassis frame during aggressive driving.
- Original Blister Pack Style Packaging — The authentic presentation in original blister pack style packaging preserves the nostalgic character of this re-release, making it an attractive display piece for collectors whilst also providing secure, organised storage of all component parts during assembly. The packaging design protects delicate components and makes inventory management during the build process straightforward and intuitive.
- White Plastic Easy-to-Paint Body Included — The unpainted white polycarbonate body shell provides a blank canvas for personalisation. You can apply acrylic or enamel paint to create your own unique design, colour scheme, or replicate classic Tamiya racing liveries. The white base ensures paint adheres properly and allows your chosen colours to display vibrant, true-to-specification hues. Building and painting your own body is part of the authentic RC car UK building experience.
Technical Performance
The Buggy Champ delivers respectable brushed RC buggy performance through carefully engineered mechanical and electrical specifications. The type 540 brushed motor provides adequate torque for off-road acceleration whilst maintaining reasonable top-end speed for recreational and competitive driving. The integrated Tamiya ESC ensures reliable power delivery and smooth throttle response, critical factors for navigating challenging terrain where precise speed control prevents loss of traction and maintains directional stability. The 2WD drivetrain focuses power distribution through the rear wheels, simplifying mechanical design whilst providing the kind of nimble, responsive handling that made the original 1979 Rough Rider legendary. The rear torsion suspension and unique front double trailing arms deliver suspension geometry that automatically adjusts to terrain variations, keeping the chassis level and maintaining tyre contact during acceleration, braking, and cornering on uneven surfaces.
Build quality throughout the chassis reflects Tamiya's engineering heritage. The 2mm FRP chassis plate provides the rigid foundation necessary for accurate suspension geometry and precise steering response. Die-cast suspension arms, axles, and wheel hubs resist bending and wear, maintaining dimensional accuracy and alignment consistency throughout extended use. Full ball bearings throughout the drivetrain and suspension minimise friction, preserving acceleration response and ensuring consistent handling characteristics from the first run through hundreds of hours of use. The redesigned oil dampers provide suspension tuning flexibility, allowing adjustment of ride height and dampening rates to suit different terrain conditions and driving styles. These combined engineering features create a robust, reliable platform capable of handling rough terrain, jumps, and aggressive driving whilst maintaining the performance characteristics that make off-road RC buggies genuinely enjoyable to operate.
