Overview
The Tamiya 1/10 Scale 2WD Off-Road RC Buggy Kit with Polycarbonate Body (TAM58525) is a re-released version of the classic Tamiya Wild One, originally launched in 1985. This legendary 2WD buggy combines authentic scale realism with genuine off-road performance, making it an ideal choice for enthusiasts seeking a traditional RC car experience. Whether you're a seasoned RC hobbyist exploring classic designs or a newcomer to the hobby discovering why this buggy has remained iconic for decades, the Wild One delivers engaging, dynamic off-road action with proven engineering.
This un-assembled kit offers the complete building experience that RC enthusiasts treasure. The Wild One is not a ready-to-run RC car; instead, it provides the satisfaction of assembly and customisation, allowing you to understand every component of your vehicle. The combination of a lightweight polycarbonate body, ABS frame chassis, and purposeful engineering makes this one of the most respected buggies available for UK RC enthusiasts looking for classic performance without excessive complexity.
Perfect for weekend bashers and those wanting an authentic RC buggy UK enthusiasts have relied on for generations, the TAM58525 balances scale realism with practical off-road capability. Its proven 2WD platform, responsive handling, and customisable design make it an excellent foundation for learning RC fundamentals or enjoying nostalgic off-road adventures.
Key Features
- Polycarbonate Body with Scale Realism — The durable, lightweight polycarbonate body shell and matching roof create an authentic scale appearance whilst remaining practical for regular use. This material choice ensures the body can withstand impacts during off-road bashings whilst remaining light enough not to compromise performance or handling characteristics.
- Roll Cage and Headlights — A protective roll cage and integrated headlights provide both functional protection and enhanced scale-realistic presence, giving the buggy a purposeful, finished appearance that stands out on the track or trail.
- Included Driver Figure — A detailed driver figure is included to populate the cockpit, immediately transforming the buggy into a finished-looking RC model that appears more lifelike and professionally presented straight from the box.
- Specialised Tyre Design — Ribbed front tyres deliver precise directional control and steering response, whilst rear tyres feature a block tread pattern engineered specifically for maximum grip. This combination allows you to enjoy dynamic off-road action with confidence and predictable handling across varied terrain.
- Lightweight ABS Frame Chassis — The durable ABS plastic frame combines strength with minimal weight, providing the rigid foundation necessary for reliable performance whilst remaining light enough to maximise efficiency and responsiveness through technical sections.
- Modern Battery Compatibility — The integrated battery case is engineered to accept modern power sources including Tamiya Racing Packs and LF (Lithium Ferrite) batteries, ensuring you can use contemporary battery technology rather than being restricted to outdated options.
- 4-Wheel Independent Suspension — Independent suspension on all four wheels, equipped with aluminium oil dampers and trailing arms, ensures excellent compliance over rough ground. This sophisticated suspension design maintains all four tyres in contact with uneven terrain, dramatically improving traction and stability during off-road adventures.
- Wide Tread Design — The generous tread width provides an exceptionally stable platform, particularly important when navigating technical terrain or challenging obstacles, ensuring the buggy remains planted and predictable through aggressive manoeuvres.
- Enclosed Gearbox Protection — The fully enclosed gearbox shields internal components from dirt, mud, grass, and debris commonly encountered during off-road use. This protection significantly extends component lifespan and reduces maintenance requirements between sessions.
- 3-Bevel Differential — The differential enables smooth, predictable cornering by allowing the outer wheels to rotate faster than inner wheels during turns. This engineering enhancement dramatically improves handling through corners whilst protecting the drivetrain from binding and stress.
- Dog-Bone Driveshaft Joints with Dust Covers — Driveshafts feature dog-bone type universal joints and protective dust covers, which combine to provide exceptional durability and protection against contamination. This design ensures reliable power delivery whilst minimising wear on critical drivetrain components.
- Rear Motor, Rear-Wheel Drive Layout — The rear-mounted motor with rear-wheel drive configuration delivers the classic buggy handling characteristic that RC enthusiasts expect, providing responsive steering and predictable weight transfer through corners.
- Dual Gear Ratio Options — Two selectable gear ratios (1:7.54 and 1:9.05) allow you to optimise performance for different conditions, track layouts, or driving preferences without requiring major chassis modifications.
Technical Performance
The Tamiya Wild One TAM58525 represents a carefully engineered platform that balances simplicity with genuine off-road capability. The heart of the buggy is a Type 540 brushed motor, a proven powerplant that delivers reliable, consistent performance without the complexity of brushless systems. This motor connects to a well-designed drivetrain featuring selectable gear ratios of 1:7.54 and 1:9.05, allowing fine-tuning of acceleration and top speed characteristics to suit your driving style and local terrain. The brushed motor type ensures straightforward electronics requirements, making this an accessible choice for builders stepping up from simpler RC cars or rediscovering classic RC technology. With dimensions of 425mm length, 225mm width, and 140mm height, the buggy presents an appropriately proportioned 1/10 scale package with a 255mm wheelbase and 190mm front and rear tread width, creating a stable, planted stance that inspires confidence during dynamic driving. The polycarbonate body combined with the lightweight ABS frame chassis minimises overall weight whilst maintaining structural rigidity necessary for consistent handling characteristics. The 4-wheel independent suspension with aluminium oil dampers and trailing arms provides sophisticated compliance over rough terrain, whilst the 3-bevel differential smooths power delivery through corners. Tyre sizing of 23mm width and 83mm diameter at the front, with 38mm width and 88mm diameter at the rear, creates a purposeful stance that complements the scale appearance. The enclosed gearbox protects internal components from the inevitable dirt and moisture encountered during off-road use, whilst dog-bone driveshaft joints with dust covers provide exceptional durability. This is an un-assembled kit requiring careful construction, yet the reward is a deeper understanding of RC fundamentals and a genuinely capable 2WD off-road buggy that performs reliably across varied terrain.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Tamiya Wild One suitable for beginners learning to build RC cars? — Yes, absolutely. With a Skill Level 2 rating, this kit is designed for builders with some basic experience or willingness to learn. The assembly process, whilst requiring attention to detail, teaches fundamental RC principles without overwhelming complexity. The straightforward brushed motor system and simple mechanical layout make this an excellent educational platform. Many experienced RC enthusiasts recommend the Wild One specifically because building it properly establishes good habits and understanding of how RC buggies function.
- What battery does the Tamiya Wild One need, and how long does it run? — The battery case is engineered to accept modern power sources including Tamiya Racing Packs and Lithium Ferrite (LF) batteries. The specific runtime depends on your chosen battery capacity and driving style, but the efficient brushed motor system typically delivers 15-30 minutes of active driving from a standard capacity battery. We recommend consulting the detailed manual for specific battery compatibility and charging instructions for your selected power source.
- What is the difference between this 2WD buggy and similar 4WD models? — The 2WD platform delivers a different driving experience compared to 4WD alternatives. This rear-wheel-drive configuration produces more pronounced weight transfer characteristics, making it more responsive to steering inputs and more engaging for experienced drivers who appreciate the dynamic handling. 2WD buggies are typically lighter, faster-accelerating, and more fun-focused than their 4WD counterparts, which prioritise traction and stability. The Wild One's proven 2WD platform has remained popular precisely because this handling balance appeals to drivers seeking authentic RC fun.
- Can I upgrade the motor or electronics in the Wild One? — The basic ABS frame and suspension layout of the Wild One accommodates various motor sizes and ESC options, though comprehensive research and careful fitment are essential before modification. The original brushed motor system works perfectly well for standard bashful driving, but many enthusiasts explore upgrades once they've mastered the base configuration.
- How durable is the polycarbonate body? — Polycarbonate is specifically chosen for RC models because it balances lightweight properties with practical durability. It resists impacts better than painted lexan and remains flexible enough to absorb shock without cracking under normal bashful use. The included roll cage provides additional structural protection. Occasional impacts during off-road use are expected and the body will survive them; catastrophic damage is unlikely under normal operating conditions.
- Is this buggy waterproof? — The Wild One is not specifically waterproofed. Whilst the enclosed gearbox provides protection against splashes and light moisture, submersion or deep water crossings will damage the motor and electronics. This remains an important consideration when selecting your terrain and conditions for use.
- How long does assembly take? — Complete assembly typically requires 4-8 hours depending on your experience level and attention to detail. This timeline allows proper study of instructions, careful component fitting, and quality control checks throughout the build process. We always recommend rushing this phase, as careful assembly directly translates to reliable performance and longevity.
