Overview

This summer, get ready to hit the water with the FTX Vortex High Speed RC Race Boat—a thrilling electric-powered ready to run RC boat that brings excitement to pools, ponds and lakes across the UK. At 44cm in length, the Vortex represents the perfect balance between performance and portability, making it an ideal choice for first-time RC boat enthusiasts and experienced water racers alike. Whether you're looking for a ready to run RC boat that demands minimal setup or a compact watercraft capable of genuine racing thrills, the Vortex delivers impressive speed, reliability and innovative self-righting technology that keeps the fun going even when you capsize.

The FTX Vortex combines intelligent engineering with user-friendly features that make it one of the most accessible high-speed RC boats available in the UK market today. With a wireless range of up to 100 metres, you'll enjoy plenty of freedom to explore larger bodies of water without losing control. The 2.4GHz proportional radio system ensures responsive, precise steering and throttle control, whilst the brushed 380-sized motor delivers speeds of up to 25kph in a compact, water-cooled design that keeps performance consistent throughout your session. Whether you're racing against friends, exploring new waterways, or simply enjoying the thrill of high-speed RC action on water, the Vortex is engineered to deliver excitement and reliability in equal measure.

What truly sets this electric RC boat apart is its comprehensive feature set designed with beginners in mind. The one-key self-righting function means that if you capsize—and at these speeds, it happens—a single button press flips your boat 180 degrees back to the upright position in seconds. Battery warnings on both the boat and transmitter ensure you're never caught stranded away from the shoreline, whilst the attractive moulded hull with printed graphics gives the Vortex genuine visual appeal. At this price point, few ready to run RC boats offer this combination of speed, safety features, build quality and value.

Key Features

  • 2.4GHz Proportional Radio Control — The Vortex uses a modern 2.4GHz radio system with full proportional control, meaning your steering and throttle inputs translate smoothly and naturally to the boat's movements, rather than simple on-off commands. This gives you precision control and makes the boat much easier to drive compared to older frequency-hopping systems, and the 100-metre range is sufficient for exploring most water environments.
  • Water-Cooled 380 Brushed Motor — The hull is specifically designed with water cooling channels that circulate lake or pool water around the motor during operation, preventing overheating and maintaining consistent performance throughout extended play sessions. The 380 brushed motor is proven, reliable and well-matched to the Vortex's lightweight frame for optimal speed and runtime balance.
  • One-Key Self-Righting Function — A unique innovation that automatically flips your boat 180 degrees when it capsizes, getting you back in the action within seconds rather than having to retrieve the boat manually or perform delicate roll manoeuvres. This feature is particularly valuable for younger drivers and reduces frustration during learning sessions.
  • High and Low Speed Modes — The transmitter includes selectable speed limiting, allowing you to start in low-speed mode for learning and familiarisation, then unlock full performance once you've mastered control. This graduated approach makes the boat suitable for a wider skill range and extends the lifespan of components under less demanding conditions.
  • Dual Low-Power Warning Alarms — Separate battery monitoring systems for both the boat and transmitter sound audible alarms when power runs low, ensuring you have adequate warning to return to shore or base before losing control. This safety feature prevents you being caught without power in the middle of a pond or lake.
  • Rear Twin Stabiliser Tabs — The rear hull incorporates twin tabs that provide directional stability and help smooth out cornering, resulting in more predictable handling characteristics and allowing you to execute tighter turns at higher speeds without losing control or porpoising (nose-diving into the water).
  • Protective Rubber Nose Cover — A reinforced rubber bumper at the bow protects the hull from impact damage during collisions with pool edges, dock pilings or other boats, reducing the likelihood of costly damage repairs and extending the Vortex's operational lifespan.
  • Moulded Hull with Printed Graphics — The Vortex features an attractive, professionally finished polyurethane or composite hull with eye-catching printed livery that looks genuinely appealing in the water and on display, giving the boat a premium appearance despite its accessible price point.
  • Range Warning System — Beyond the low-battery alarms, the radio includes a range warning indicator that alerts you when the boat is approaching the maximum 100-metre control distance, allowing you to adjust course before losing signal.
  • Spare Propeller Included — The box includes a replacement prop, so if you damage your primary propeller through impact or collision, you can swap it quickly and continue playing rather than waiting for a replacement to arrive.
  • USB Charging System — The 1500mAh 7.4V LiPo battery charges via standard USB, making it convenient to top up from a laptop, power bank, phone charger or any USB mains adapter without requiring specialist charging equipment.

Technical Performance

The FTX Vortex represents a carefully engineered balance between speed, durability and user-friendliness. Its 44cm length positions it as a true pocket rocket—compact enough to transport easily and launch from smaller water bodies, yet substantial enough to achieve genuine racing performance. The brushed 380-sized motor is a time-tested design widely recognised across the RC hobby for reliability and predictable performance characteristics. Coupled with the specialised water-cooled lower hull design, the motor maintains consistent speed delivery even during sustained high-speed runs, preventing the thermal throttling that can affect performance in air-cooled designs. The boat achieves speeds of up to 25kph, which translates to genuinely thrilling acceleration and sustained high-speed cruising across pools and lakes.

The electrical architecture centres on a 1500mAh 7.4V LiPo battery—a genuine lithium-polymer cell that delivers the necessary current to drive the 380 motor whilst maintaining stable voltage throughout the discharge curve. At 7.4V nominal (2S configuration), this battery voltage is optimised for the brushed motor and speed controller, providing approximately 10 minutes of continuous runtime under typical driving conditions. The Deans connector utilised for battery connections is an industry-standard connector valued for its low resistance and secure fitting, reducing voltage drop and ensuring maximum power delivery to the motor. For charging, the USB charger facilitates convenient top-ups from mains power, computers or portable power banks, though users should never leave the battery unattended during charging and should follow standard lithium-polymer safety protocols. The boat requires four AA batteries (not included) for the transmitter, which should be alkaline or rechargeable NiMH cells. Assembly is complete out of the box—the Vortex is delivered fully assembled and ready to run, requiring only battery installation and radio binding before your first water session.

Hull construction utilises a moulded composite design that balances weight, rigidity and impact resistance. The overall proportions reflect careful hydrodynamic consideration: the bow is relatively pointed for reduced water resistance and cleaner cutting through waves, whilst the beam (width) is substantial enough to provide stability during high-speed turns. The twin rear tabs function as trim stabilisers, similar to those found on full-size racing boats, reducing porpoising and allowing the pilot to maintain control during aggressive manoeuvrability. The 2.4GHz radio system operates on frequency-hopping protocols, making it immune to the interference issues that plagued older single-frequency systems, and allows multiple boats to operate simultaneously without crosstalk or control loss. This is particularly valuable if you're racing with friends or family members.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the FTX Vortex suitable for RC boat beginners? — Absolutely. The Vortex is classified as Skill Level 1, meaning it requires minimal assembly and technical knowledge. It arrives ready to run, with the only setup being battery installation and radio binding. The high and low-speed modes allow beginners to start cautiously, and the self-righting function removes the frustration of having to retrieve a capsized boat. The 2.4GHz proportional radio provides natural, intuitive control that's easier to master than older radio systems.
  • What is the wireless range of the Vortex? — The Vortex offers a wireless control range of up to 100 metres, which is more than sufficient for pools, ponds and most recreational lake usage. This range is achieved via the 2.4GHz frequency-hopping radio system, which is immune to interference from WiFi, mobile networks and other RC equipment operating nearby.
  • How long does the battery last, and how quickly does it charge? — The included 1500mAh 7.4V LiPo battery provides approximately 10 minutes of continuous runtime under typical driving conditions. Charging time depends on the power source—standard USB mains chargers typically require 1-2 hours for a full charge. Always supervise charging and never leave a LiPo battery unattended whilst charging.
  • What happens if the Vortex capsizes? — The one-key self-righting function automatically flips the boat 180 degrees back to upright position in seconds. Simply press the designated button on the transmitter, and the boat rights itself. If the self-righting mechanism fails for any reason, the boat will float, allowing you to retrieve it manually.
  • What are the battery requirements for the transmitter? — The 2.4GHz radio transmitter requires four AA batteries, which are not included. You can use either alkaline AA batteries or rechargeable NiMH AAs. Alkalines offer convenience but higher long-term cost, whilst NiMH offers better value and environmental benefits for regular users.
  • What motor is installed in the Vortex? — The boat features a brushed 380-sized motor, which is a proven design widely used across the RC hobby. The 380 designation refers to the motor can diameter—a size optimised for balanced speed and torque. It is water-cooled via the specially designed hull to prevent thermal issues during extended sessions.
  • Can I use the Vortex in salt water? — The source material does not specify saltwater compatibility. For safety, you should assume the Vortex is designed for freshwater use (pools, ponds, lakes). Saltwater requires extensive corrosion-resistant components not mentioned in the specifications. Always rinse with fresh water after any use near coastal environments.
  • What speed does the Vortex achieve? — The boat is capable of speeds up to 25kph, which provides genuinely thrilling acceleration and performance for a 44cm electric RC boat. This speed is achievable in calm water—wind, waves and water conditions will affect actual performance.
  • Is the Vortex faster than similar RC boats? — At 25kph, the Vortex is competitive within its size and class. The FTX product range includes other models (such as the FTX0700), so comparing specifications is worthwhile if you're choosing between options. The Vortex's strength lies in its combination of speed, self-righting technology and beginner-friendly features rather than being the absolute fastest available.
  • What type of water is the Vortex suitable for? — The manufacturer recommends pools, ponds and lakes, making it versatile across freshwater recreational environments. Avoid rivers with strong currents, as the 100-metre range and compact size make recovery difficult in flowing water. Always supervise children and operate in safe, legal locations.
