Key Features
- Factory-Installed Long Arm Lift Kit — The K10 High Trail Edition arrives with a pre-assembled lift kit that raises the chassis over an inch higher than standard TRX-4 models, delivering superior ground clearance for tackling bigger obstacles and more technical terrain without the chassis catching on rocks or ruts.
- Portal Axles with Metal Ring and Pinion Gears — Traxxas's signature portal axle design is a game-changer for scale crawling, allowing the differential to sit much higher relative to the running surface for dramatically increased ground clearance. Portal axles also eliminate torque twist—the unrealistic leaning that occurs with conventional straight-axle trucks—by providing more than twice the total gear reduction, converting engine RPM into usable torque for superior traction and authentic-looking performance.
- Extended 336mm Steel Ladder Frame Wheelbase — K10's extended wheelbase perfectly captures the proportions of the real 1979 Chevrolet pickup whilst delivering tangible performance benefits including greater climbing stability, improved traversal over rough terrain, and a smoother, more planted ride. The wheelbase is constructed from tough 1.5mm steel C-channel rails, with each rail running as a single piece from bumper to bumper for maximum rigidity and durability.
- Clipless Body Mounting System — The innovative clipless body technology allows the K10 replica body to lock firmly in place with a satisfying snap using hidden internal latches, yet release in just seconds without traditional body clips. This system eliminates frustrating clip loss whilst enhancing the scale realism of the model by removing visual interruptions from the bodywork's clean lines.
- Oversized 2.2-Inch Mag Wheels with Canyon Trail Tyres — Large 2.2-inch wheels wrapped in aggressive 135 x 54mm Canyon Trail tyres provide exceptional traction across all terrain types. The combination of wheel size and premium tyre compound gives you the ability to explore technical trails that would challenge standard RC crawlers, extending your scale adventures farther than ever possible before.
- Waterproof Electronics — The complete electronics package is waterproof-rated, giving you confidence to cross streams, navigate water crossings, and operate in wet conditions without fear of damage. This opens up genuine outdoor adventure possibilities that many RC vehicles simply cannot handle.
- Four-Wheel Drive with Locking Differentials — The shaft-driven 4WD system with remote-locking differentials delivers power to all four wheels simultaneously, whilst allowing you to lock the front and rear diffs independently from the transmitter for maximum traction on slippery surfaces. This combination is essential for serious rock crawling and technical terrain.
- TQi 2.4 GHz Four-Channel Radio System — Traxxas's TQi 2.4 GHz transmitter provides rock-solid, lag-free control with industry-leading range and reliability. The four-channel configuration gives you throttle, steering, differential lock, and high/low transmission shifting all under your fingertip control.
- XL-5 HV Waterproof Electronic Speed Control with Trail and Crawl Modes — This intelligent speed controller features dual driving modes: Trail Mode for wider throttle response ideal for general exploration, and Crawl Mode for precise, inch-by-inch control over technical obstacles. The waterproof design matches your motor and electronics for complete protection.
- Two-Speed Hi-Lo Transmission with Remote Shifting — Switch between High gear for trail cruising and Low gear for maximum torque climbing directly from your transmitter. This feature lets you tackle terrain ranging from smooth trails to boulder-strewn rock gardens with a single vehicle.
- Metal-Gear High-Torque Steering Servo — The included 2075X steering servo features metal gears for durability and sufficient torque to deliver quick, responsive steering even under load on technical terrain, without the slop or wear that plastic gears develop over time.
- Dual-Plate Slipper Clutch — This intelligent component protects the drivetrain from damage during hard crashes by slipping when torque exceeds safe levels, extending the lifespan of your transmission, differentials and driveshafts through extended use and inevitable trail impacts.
- Telescoping Driveshafts with Hardened Steel U-Joints — The driveshafts telescope during suspension articulation to accommodate wheel travel while maintaining constant drive, with hardened steel U-joints that resist wear and maintain reliability under demanding conditions.
- 3-Link Front Suspension with Panhard Bar and 4-Link Rear Suspension — Traxxas's sophisticated independent suspension geometry keeps all four wheels planted on uneven terrain for maximum traction and control. The Panhard bar prevents sideways axle movement whilst the 3-link and 4-link configurations maintain ride height through extreme articulation.
- Extended 110mm GTS Aluminium Shocks — High Trail Edition trucks receive longer 110mm GTS shocks compared to standard TRX-4s, providing greater suspension travel for improved articulation over rocks and obstacles. The aluminium bodies with 8mm bores feature dual X-ring seals and plated shafts for long-lasting, leak-free performance, with tool-free trailside ride-height adjustment via threaded bodies.
- Heavy-Duty Steel Suspension Links — The upper and lower suspension links are constructed from high-strength steel with captured rod ends and steel hollow balls, resisting flex and shrugging off the inevitable scrapes from rock crawling, ensuring years of reliable performance.
- 45-Degree Steering Angle — The chassis mounting allows up to 45 degrees of steering lock in each direction, providing the extreme steering angles necessary for technical rock crawling and tight manoeuvres on narrow trails.
- Electronic Hill Hold Brake System — The smart brake system holds the vehicle in place on hills when you release the throttle, preventing rollback and adding another layer of realism to your trail adventures.
- Traxxas-Tough Durability — Every component has been engineered and tested to withstand the punishment of real-world trail use, from impacts and rollovers to water crossings and extreme articulation, with genuine Traxxas spares and support available worldwide.
Technical Performance
The Traxxas TRX-4 K10 High Trail Edition represents an exceptional achievement in RC trail crawler engineering, combining brushed motor technology with intelligent electronic control systems to deliver performance that exceeds expectations for a ready-to-run model. At the heart of this machine is a Titan 21-tooth reverse rotation motor paired with an XL-5 HV waterproof electronic speed control featuring dedicated Trail and Crawl modes—the latter providing the precise, modulated power delivery essential for inch-by-inch technical crawling where control matters more than outright speed. The motor's reverse rotation design works seamlessly with the two-speed Hi-Lo transmission and 4-gear remote-locking differentials to optimise performance across the entire range of terrain you'll encounter. The steel ladder frame chassis uses 1.5mm C-channel rails as a single continuous piece from front to rear, combined with nylon composite crossmembers, creating a structure that's simultaneously rigid enough for precise handling yet strong enough to absorb impacts that would compromise lesser designs. Chassis-mounted steering delivers direct feedback whilst the metal-gear 2075X servo provides sufficient torque to operate the front axle steering under load without strain. The TQi 2.4 GHz radio system operates on a dedicated frequency with zero interference susceptibility, giving you reliable control even in crowded RC environments. Ground clearance measures 99mm at the centre with 70-degree approach angle, 52-degree departure angle, and 67-degree breakover angle—specifications that define genuine rock-crawling capability. The vehicle accepts a wide variety of NiMH (4-7 cell) and LiPo (2S-3S) batteries, offering flexibility for different driving styles and runtimes. The brushed motor, whilst not reaching the efficiency of brushless systems, offers simplicity, reliability, and the kind of predictable power delivery that makes trail crawling genuinely enjoyable. Waterproof electronics throughout mean you can confidently cross streams and navigate wet terrain without the anxiety that accompanies vulnerable electronics. The complete package weighs 3.35kg (7.38lbs) without battery, providing sufficient mass for stability on rough terrain whilst remaining light enough for comfortable handling.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Traxxas TRX-4 K10 High Trail Edition suitable for UK beginners discovering rock crawling? — Absolutely yes. Skill Level 2 classification reflects that assembly is complete and you're ready to drive immediately, not that the driving experience is advanced. The Crawl mode in the XL-5 HV controller gives beginners precise throttle control essential for learning technical terrain, whilst the included TQi transmitter is intuitive and responsive. The stable, long wheelbase and low centre of gravity make this forgiving and confidence-building. Many experienced crawlers choose this model specifically because it teaches proper technique rather than masking poor input with excessive power.
- What battery does the TRX-4 K10 accept and how long does it run? — The vehicle accepts a wide range of battery options: either NiMH packs from 4-cell (4.8V nominal) up to 7-cell (8.4V nominal), or LiPo packs in 2S configuration (7.4V) or 3S configuration (11.1V). Higher voltage NiMH or 3S LiPo will provide more power and faster charging cycles, whilst lower voltage options remain compatible. Runtime varies significantly based on driving style—aggressive high-speed running depletes batteries faster, whereas the crawling and trail speeds this vehicle excels at typically deliver 30-60 minutes of enjoyable driving from a quality pack. We recommend investing in a dedicated LiPo charger and safety sack if choosing LiPo batteries, or the Traxxas EZ-Peak charger for maximum convenience with either chemistry.
- How does the K10 High Trail Edition compare to standard TRX-4 models? — The High Trail Edition is Traxxas's ultimate expression of lifted trail capability. Compared to standard TRX-4s, you receive: factory-installed Long Arm Lift Kit raising the body over an inch higher; extended 110mm GTS shocks instead of 90mm; an extended 336mm wheelbase instead of shorter configurations; oversized 2.2-inch tyres instead of standard sizes; and the clipless body mounting system for added convenience. The longer wheelbase delivers notably improved climbing stability and smoother ride quality, whilst the additional height and suspension travel tackle more technical terrain. If you want the absolute best in articulation, ground clearance, and scale realism, the High Trail Edition is unquestionably the choice.
- What makes portal axles so important for rock crawling? — Portal axles are Traxxas's signature feature for good reason. Unlike straight-axle trucks where the differential sits at wheel height, portal axles position the differential much higher, dramatically increasing ground clearance—critical when crawling over boulders and rocks. More importantly, portal axles provide more than twice the total gear reduction of straight axles, turning motor RPM into genuine torque whilst virtually eliminating torque twist (the unrealistic leaning that occurs when conventional trucks power through turns). This combination means the TRX-4 can inch over obstacles at walking pace with perfect control, looks realistic whilst doing so, and puts power exactly where it's needed without the wild handling characteristics of straight-axle designs.
- Is the TRX-4 K10 truly waterproof? — Yes, Traxxas rates the complete electronics as waterproof, including the motor, speed control, receiver, and servo. This means you can confidently cross streams, navigate shallow water sections, and operate in wet conditions. However, waterproof does not mean submersion-proof—occasional water contact and splashing pose no risk, but extended submersion or high-pressure spray should be avoided. After water operation, allow electronics to air dry completely before recharging or extensive use to prevent any potential corrosion.
- What is the difference between Trail Mode and Crawl Mode on the XL-5 HV controller? — Trail Mode provides wider throttle response suitable for general trail driving at normal speeds, allowing you to accelerate smoothly and maintain moderate pace. Crawl Mode dramatically slows throttle response, giving you incredibly precise, modulated power perfect for technical rock crawling where you need exact control over forward momentum inch by inch. Switching between modes is as simple as adjusting a dial on the transmitter—no reprogramming necessary. Expert crawlers spend most time in Crawl Mode; beginners and those doing casual trail running prefer Trail Mode.
- Can the wheelbase be adjusted on the K10? — Yes, the TRX-4 chassis features adjustable wheelbase, allowing configuration at 300mm, 312mm, 324mm, or 336mm. The K10 High Trail Edition ships configured at 336mm for optimal proportions matching the 1979 Chevrolet K10 pickup. If you ever wish to fit a different TRX-4 body (many are available), you can easily reconfigure the wheelbase using Traxxas's detailed adjustment guide.
- What is the difference between the brushed Titan motor in this model versus brushless alternatives? — The Titan 21-tooth brushed motor in this RTR provides reliability, simplicity, and predictable power delivery ideal for trail crawling. Brushless motors offer greater efficiency and require no brush maintenance, but add significant cost to the ready-to-run price. For trail crawling where control and modulation matter more than outright speed, the brushed motor is an excellent choice that keeps the complete package accessible to UK buyers. If you later wish to upgrade to brushless, genuine Traxxas brushless kits are available.
- What ground clearance does the High Trail Edition provide? — Centre ground clearance measures 99mm (3.94 inches), which combined with the portal axle design and lifted suspension, allows traversal over obstacles that would snag standard RC trucks. The 70-degree approach angle and 52-degree departure angle mean the bumpers won't catch on rocks or ramps at entry and exit points, critical for technical crawling.
- Is the TQi radio system reliable and does it have good range? — The TQi 2.4 GHz four-channel system is Traxxas's industry-standard radio, used in countless vehicles worldwide and recognised for bulletproof reliability. The frequency-hopping 2.4 GHz technology means zero interference susceptibility, and range easily exceeds 100 metres—far more than you'll need for trail crawling. The transmitter feels premium with responsive, well-damped controls, and the included receiver pairs automatically without complex programming.
