Overview
The Tamiya 1/10 Scale Toyota Celica GT-Four 1990 TT-02 RC Rally Car Kit is a stunning recreation of one of rally racing's most iconic vehicles. In 1990, the real Toyota Celica GT-Four (ST165) dominated global rally competitions, securing five victories on its way to claiming the first Drivers' title ever won by a Japanese car. This RC model assembly kit faithfully captures that legendary machine in 1/10 scale, combining authentic design with the proven engineering of Tamiya's adaptable TT-02 chassis. Whether you're an experienced RC enthusiast looking for a classic rally build or a newcomer to the hobby seeking a quality RC car UK, this kit offers the perfect blend of historical significance, visual appeal and genuine rally-inspired performance.
This is not a ready-to-run RC car — it's an assembly kit designed for hobbyists who enjoy the satisfaction of building their own models. With a skill level rating of Skill Level 2, it's accessible to intermediate builders whilst offering plenty of customisation potential for those who want to fine-tune their setup. The polycarbonate body captures the streamlined silhouette that made the real Celica GT-Four so visually distinctive, complete with authentic livery stickers including sponsor logos and the car's eye-catching red accents. When completed, this 1/10 scale brushed RC rally car delivers genuine on-road performance on asphalt and flat dirt surfaces, making it an excellent choice for rally action and weekend bashing alike.
What sets this RC rally car apart is the engineering philosophy behind the TT-02 chassis platform. Rather than being a fixed, one-setup machine, the TT-02 offers genuine adaptability with multiple adjustment options built in from the factory. This means you can configure your car for different driving styles, track conditions and skill levels as your experience grows, extending the life of your investment and keeping the hobby fresh and engaging long after you've completed the initial build.
Key Features
- Shaft-Driven 4WD TT-02 Chassis — The longitudinal layout positions the battery on the left and motor on the right, delivering excellent stability and balanced weight distribution across all four wheels. Shaft-driven 4WD means improved efficiency and less maintenance than belt-driven alternatives, whilst genuine four-wheel-drive capability provides superior traction on both asphalt and loose surfaces compared to 2WD RC cars.
- 10 Selectable Gear Ratios — The standard setup comes with an 8.27:1 gear ratio, but nine additional ratios ranging from 11.38:1 to 7.28:1 are possible with separately-sold pinions. This flexibility allows you to optimise your car's performance for different track layouts, speed preferences and motor setups without replacing the entire transmission.
- Identical Left and Right Suspension Components — Both sides of the car feature matching suspension arms and uprights, making assembly more intuitive for builders and simplifying spare parts inventory. This symmetrical design also ensures consistent handling behaviour on both sides of the vehicle.
- Easy-to-Maintain Gearboxes — The TT-02 gearbox design prioritises serviceability, allowing you to perform maintenance and upgrades without complete disassembly. This makes keeping your RC car in peak condition straightforward and economical.
- Multiple Setup Options — Choose from two different wheelbases, two ground clearance settings and two tread configurations. These options allow you to tailor the car's handling characteristics and ride height to match track conditions or your personal driving style.
- 4-Wheel Double Wishbone Suspension — All four corners use proven double wishbone geometry with front and rear friction dampers, providing balanced handling and consistent performance across varying surfaces. This suspension architecture keeps all four tyres in contact with the ground during cornering and acceleration.
- Polycarbonate Body with Rally Livery — The lightweight 1.0mm thick polycarbonate shell captures the famous streamlined silhouette of the 1990 Toyota Celica GT-Four with meticulous detail. Included stickers recreate the sponsor logos and distinctive red eye-catching livery that made the original so memorable, whilst window masking tape is provided for painting the body in your chosen colours.
- Brake Disc-Style Wheel Hubs — Rather than functional brake systems, these realistic disc-shaped hubs add visual authenticity and a professional appearance to the finished model, reminiscent of high-performance rally machinery.
- Racing Radial Tyres with Tread Pattern — White rally dish wheels are fitted with semi-pneumatic treaded racing radial tyres engineered for reliable grip on both smooth asphalt and light dirt surfaces. The tread pattern provides genuine on-road performance rather than slick tyres, making this a true rally-focused platform.
- Resin Ball Links in Steering Linkage — The steering system employs a 3-piece tie-rod design with resin ball links at each joint, ensuring smooth, responsive steering input and improving overall handling precision compared to older bushing-based systems.
- Type 540 Brushed Motor — The included brushed motor is a proven, reliable workhorse in RC applications, delivering consistent power and excellent efficiency. Brushed motors are easier to maintain than brushless alternatives and are completely suitable for this vehicle's scale and intended use.
- Motor Cover with Removable Cooling Duct — The cover includes a removable cooling duct that helps manage motor temperature during extended running sessions, improving performance stability and motor longevity without adding bulk to the finished car.
- Bathtub-Type Chassis Frame — The distinctive bathtub frame design provides excellent structural rigidity whilst minimising weight, crucial for maintaining responsive handling and acceleration in a 1/10 scale rally car.
- Front and Rear 4-Bevel Plastic Differentials — These differentials allow the inside and outside wheels to rotate at different speeds during cornering, which is essential for smooth, stable cornering behaviour on any RC car UK buyer would appreciate.
Technical Performance
The Tamiya TT-02 chassis has earned its place as one of the most respected platforms in RC on-road racing and bashing, and this Toyota Celica GT-Four edition exemplifies why. At 450mm length, 185mm width and 130mm height with a 257mm wheelbase, this 1/10 scale model achieves realistic proportions that capture the original car's essential character. The shaft-driven 4WD system, combined with the longitudinal motor and battery layout, creates a vehicle with exceptionally balanced weight distribution — a critical factor in rally performance where smooth, predictable handling matters more than raw speed. The included Type 540 brushed motor delivers plenty of power for spirited on-road running, whilst the standard 8.27:1 gear ratio provides a sensible balance between acceleration and top speed. The front and rear 4-bevel plastic differentials ensure that power is distributed intelligently to all four wheels, with the inside wheels rotating slower during turns for optimal grip and control. Suspension geometry employs proven double wishbone design at all four corners, with friction dampers providing tuneable damping characteristics without the complexity and expense of oil-filled shocks. The 27mm wide, 66mm diameter tyres are sized appropriately for this scale and shod with realistic tread-pattern racing radials that grip asphalt and loose dirt surfaces effectively. Construction emphasises simplicity and serviceability — the bathtub-type frame is rigid enough for genuine performance yet straightforward enough for a skilled intermediate builder to assemble confidently. The polycarbonate body, measuring just 1.0mm thick, provides excellent durability whilst keeping unsprung weight to a minimum, crucial for maintaining suspension performance and handling responsiveness. The resin ball links in the steering system ensure precise, feedback-rich steering feel that will appeal to drivers who appreciate rally-style precision over loose, forgiving handling.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Tamiya Celica GT-Four TT-02 suitable for beginners? — This kit is rated as Skill Level 2, making it ideal for intermediate builders with some RC assembly experience but still accessible to determined beginners. The TT-02 chassis design prioritises ease of maintenance and assembly compared to more complex platforms, and identical left and right suspension components simplify the build process. However, you will need to source a radio system, ESC, servo and battery separately, which adds to the initial complexity and cost compared to ready-to-run RC cars.
- What battery does this RC rally car need? — The Celica GT-Four requires a 7.2-7.4 volt rechargeable battery pack with a compatible charger. Both NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) and LiPo (lithium polymer) batteries are suitable, though LiPo packs offer better performance and charge retention. You'll also need R6, AA or UM3 batteries for the radio transmitter, typically four or eight cells depending on your radio system.
- What is the wheelbase and can it be adjusted? — The standard wheelbase is 257mm, but the TT-02 chassis offers two different wheelbase options, allowing you to fine-tune weight distribution and handling characteristics to suit different track layouts and driving styles.
- How many gear ratios does this car support? — The kit includes a standard 8.27:1 gear ratio, but the TT-02 gearbox supports 10 possible ratios total, ranging from 11.38:1 (slower, more torque) to 7.28:1 (faster, less torque). You can change ratios by purchasing separately-sold pinion gears, making this an excellent platform for experimenting with different setups and performance characteristics.
- What surfaces can I drive this on? — The Celica GT-Four is designed for on-road use on asphalt and flat dirt surfaces, making it perfect for rally-style driving. The semi-pneumatic treaded racing radial tyres provide realistic grip on these surfaces, and the low-slung body geometry is optimised for smooth, flowing driving rather than extreme off-road terrain.
- Do I need to paint the body? — Yes, the polycarbonate body comes unpainted and will require polycarbonate paint to finish. Window masking tape is included to mask off the windows during painting, and Tamiya PS paint is recommended as the standard option.
- What is the length of the finished car? — The completed car measures 450mm in length, 185mm in width and 130mm in height, making it a substantial and realistic-looking 1/10 scale model.
- Can I upgrade components on the TT-02 chassis? — Yes, the TT-02 is highly modular and adaptable. The gearbox design allows easy maintenance and parts swaps, multiple gear ratios are available, and numerous aftermarket upgrades exist. This makes it an excellent long-term platform that grows with your skills and interests.
