Overview

The Traxxas TRX-4 1979 Ford F-150 Ranger XLT High Trail Edition is a premium 1/10 scale 4WD electric trail crawler that combines stunning authenticity with exceptional off-road capability. This is the latest truck to receive Traxxas's celebrated High Trail Edition treatment, featuring a striking replica body that faithfully recreates the iconic 1979 Ford F-150, paired with a high-riding stance that commands attention on any trail. Whether you're a seasoned RC enthusiast looking for a ready-to-run RC car with serious scale credentials, or an intermediate driver seeking exceptional climbing ability and durability, the TRX-4 F-150 High Trail Edition delivers everything you need for adventure on the toughest terrain.

High Trail Edition trucks take adventure to new heights with factory-installed Long Arm Lift Kits and oversize tyres that raise ground clearance over an inch higher than standard TRX-4s. The F-150 Ranger's extended wheelbase further enhances TRX-4's already legendary off-road capability for even more fun on the trail. This is the perfect vehicle for the driver who wants it all: extreme all-terrain capability, stunning scale looks, and Traxxas-Tough durability. If you're searching for a brushless RC 4WD truck that combines scale realism with genuine trail-conquering performance, the TRX-4 F-150 High Trail Edition in striking blue is a masterclass in design and engineering.

The combination of professional-grade electronics (TQi 4-channel radio, XL-5 HV brushed motor system, Titan 550 motor, and locking differentials) ensures you get a capable, ready-to-run RC crawler that performs reliably in the most demanding conditions. This isn't just another RC truck — it's a scale adventure platform engineered for serious trail enthusiasts.

Key Features

  • High Trail Edition Factory-Installed Long Arm Lift Kit — The suspension system is raised over an inch higher than standard TRX-4 models, delivering superior ground clearance that allows you to tackle steeper inclines, rockier terrain, and more technical obstacles without undercarriage contact. This factory-fitted lift kit means you get genuine high-rider capability straight out of the box without additional modifications.
  • Extended 336mm Steel Ladder Frame Wheelbase — The F-150's extended wheelbase lengthens to 336mm (13.23 inches) to capture the real-world pickup's proportions perfectly. A longer wheelbase translates into greater climbing stability on steep inclines, a smoother ride over rough, broken terrain, and improved weight distribution across uneven surfaces. This engineering choice directly enhances both scale authenticity and practical trail performance.
  • Large 2.2-Inch Slotted Mag Wheels with Canyon Trail Tyres — Purpose-designed wheels and tyres tame even the most technical trails and extend your scale adventures farther than ever before. The generous tyre sidewalls provide compliance over rocks and roots, whilst the slotted mag wheels offer a scale-authentic look that matches the period-correct aesthetic of the 1979 F-150 Ranger XLT.
  • Clipless Body Mounting System — The hidden latching system gives the F-150 a clean, flowing body profile for a new level of scale realism and convenience. On the trail, the clipless body holds tight when you need it, but releases in just seconds to access the chassis for maintenance, battery swaps, or electronics adjustments. This design philosophy prioritises both aesthetics and practicality.
  • 1979 Ford F-150 Ranger XLT Replica Body in Blue — Every detail of this body shell is a faithful reproduction of the iconic 1979 Ford F-150, recreating the truck's recognisable proportions, window lines, and distinctive front end. The striking blue finish delivers eye-catching presence on the trail and at the club. This level of scale authenticity appeals to both vintage truck enthusiasts and serious scale crawler builders.
  • Four-Wheel Drive with Locking Differentials — The 4WD drivetrain with factory-fitted locking differentials ensures maximum traction and power delivery to all four wheels when you need it most. Locking diffs are essential for rock crawling, climbing steep embankments, and maintaining momentum across slippery or uneven surfaces where wheel slip would otherwise rob you of forward progress.
  • TQi 4-Channel Radio System — The Traxxas TQi transmitter provides responsive, accurate control with four independent channels for steering, throttle, and auxiliary functions. This is Traxxas's latest-generation radio platform, offering reliable communication and user-friendly operation for both beginners discovering the world of RC and experienced pilots.
  • XL-5 HV Brushed Motor System — The XL-5 HV ESC (Electronic Speed Controller) paired with the Titan 550 brushed motor delivers consistent, predictable power delivery ideal for trail crawling where smooth, controlled acceleration matters more than raw speed. The HV (High Voltage) designation means enhanced performance when running on fully charged 3S LiPo batteries.
  • 2-Speed Transmission — The two-speed gearbox provides an ideal balance between low-speed crawling torque and higher-speed trail mobility. Switch between gears to optimise performance for different terrain types, whether you're picking your way over a technical rock garden or covering ground at cruising speed across open terrain.
  • Premium Chassis Construction — An extended steel ladder frame with full-length 1.5mm thick steel rails provides uncompromised structural rigidity and durability. Steel construction is the gold standard for serious trail trucks, offering long-term toughness and the ability to absorb impacts from rocky, rooty terrain without permanent damage.

Technical Performance

The Traxxas TRX-4 1979 Ford F-150 Ranger XLT High Trail Edition is engineered as a serious trail crawler with dimensions of 566mm length, 270mm front and rear track widths, and a height of 275mm overall. The extended 336mm wheelbase provides genuine stability improvements over shorter-wheelbase crawlers, whilst the factory-fitted Long Arm Lift Kit raises the chassis to 99mm centre ground clearance — over an inch higher than standard TRX-4 models. The vehicle weighs 3.33kg (7.34lbs) without battery, a carefully optimised mass that balances durability with manoeuvrability. The approach angle reaches an impressive 73.5°, departure angle is 49.67°, and breakover angle is 67°, translating to genuine rock-crawling geometry that lets you attack obstacles other RC trucks cannot surmount. The suspension consists of adjustable oil-filled shocks measuring 4.33 inches (110mm) front and rear, providing the damping and travel essential for smooth, controlled articulation across broken terrain. Tyre sizes measure 5.3 x 2.14 inches (135.4 x 54.4mm) all around, mounted on 2.2-inch slotted mag wheels, whilst front and rear wheels measure 2.2 x 1.34 inches (56 x 34mm). Performance-wise, the Titan 550 brushed motor paired with the XL-5 HV ESC delivers trail-appropriate power delivery optimised for control and consistency rather than outright speed. The 2-speed transmission allows you to adapt gearing to different terrain, whilst the factory-fitted locking differentials ensure maximum traction and power distribution. Battery and charger are sold separately, allowing you to select a 3S LiPo battery system matched to your charging infrastructure and running time requirements. This brushed motor platform provides proven reliability, straightforward maintenance, and affordable repair should any component require replacement. Every engineering decision in the TRX-4 F-150 High Trail Edition prioritises trail-specific capability, durability, and scale authenticity.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What makes the High Trail Edition different from standard TRX-4 models? — The High Trail Edition features a factory-installed Long Arm Lift Kit that raises ground clearance over an inch higher than standard TRX-4s, plus the F-150 benefits from an extended 336mm wheelbase that further enhances off-road capability. The combination of increased ground clearance and extended wheelbase makes High Trail models superior climbers and more stable over broken, rocky terrain. If you're serious about trail crawling, the High Trail Edition's geometry provides genuine performance advantages.
  • Is this suitable for beginners? — Whilst the TRX-4 platform is well-regarded for reliability and ease of use, trail crawling does require some driving finesse to navigate technical terrain successfully. The brushed motor system is simpler to maintain than brushless alternatives, making repairs and adjustments more straightforward. However, the lengthy wheelbase and lifted suspension mean this truck handles differently from smaller, more nimble RC models. Intermediate drivers, or beginners with patience and a willingness to learn proper crawler techniques, will find this vehicle accessible and rewarding.
  • What battery does this need and what runtime should I expect? — The XL-5 HV ESC is compatible with 3S LiPo batteries, which deliver 11.1 volts nominal output at full charge. Traxxas offers the 3S LiPo Completer with EZ-Peak Charger as an optional purchase (part number sold separately at £139.95). Runtime varies depending on driving intensity and terrain, but trail crawling typically allows longer runtimes than high-speed bashing because throttle usage is more moderate and momentum-based rather than wide-open. Battery and charger purchases are essential before you can operate this truck, so factor those costs into your budget.
  • What is the difference between the TRX-4 F-150 High Trail Edition and other trail crawlers? — The TRX-4 platform stands apart through Traxxas's engineering excellence, scale authenticity, and proven durability across generations. The High Trail Edition specifically distinguishes itself through the factory-fitted Long Arm Lift Kit (no modifications required), extended 336mm wheelbase that captures the real 1979 F-150's proportions, and the combination of 73.5° approach angle and 67° breakover angle that enable genuine rock-crawling capability. Competitors may offer lower prices or different aesthetics, but few deliver the combination of scale realism, factory lift kit installation, and Traxxas-Tough reliability that this model provides.
  • Is the body wipeable/weatherproof for use in damp conditions? — The body shell itself is lexan plastic, which is inherently weatherproof. The TRX-4 platform uses the XL-5 HV brushed ESC, which incorporates waterproof electronics suitable for wet and muddy trail conditions. However, always inspect the vehicle after wet weather use, allow electronics to dry thoroughly, and check battery connectors for moisture ingress. Whilst the TRX-4 is significantly more weather-resistant than many RC vehicles, no RC model is truly submersible, so avoid intentional water crossings or fully submerged operation.
  • Can I upgrade to brushless power on this truck? — The TRX-4 F-150 High Trail Edition is supplied with the brushed Titan 550 motor and XL-5 HV ESC. Traxxas offers brushless upgrade options for some TRX-4 variants, but chassis compatibility and specific model variations mean you should consult with RC Model Shop to explore available upgrade pathways. The brushed platform is proven, easy to maintain, and offers excellent value, but brushless alternatives do provide higher top-speed capability if increased performance is your priority.
  • What tools and maintenance items do I need? — The TRX-4 is designed for owner maintenance using standard hobby tools: hex wrenches, screwdrivers, and adjustable wrenches are sufficient for routine maintenance. Traxxas sells a dedicated TRX-4 maintenance kit, lubricants, and replacement wear items. The brushed motor is simple to maintain compared to brushless designs — brush replacement and commutator cleaning are straightforward jobs. Always keep spare tyres, a small bottle of silicone shock oil for suspension maintenance, and battery-specific connectors on hand for extended trail sessions.
  • How does the 2-speed transmission work and when do I shift gears? — The 2-speed transmission allows you to switch between low and high gears, optimising power delivery for different terrain and speeds. In low gear, maximum torque is available for technical rock crawling where slow, controlled articulation matters most. Shift to high gear to cover ground more quickly across open terrain or smoother trails. The transmission switches via a channel on the TQi transmitter, typically with a simple button press or toggle. Learning when to shift appropriately is part of developing crawler driving skills and becomes intuitive with practice.
