RC car tuning in the UK has never been more accessible, and transmission gearing is one of the most effective ways to alter how your model accelerates and reaches top speed. This authentic Traxxas replacement part allows you to experiment with different gear ratios, helping you achieve the perfect balance between acceleration and top-end speed for your particular running conditions and driving style.
Key Features
- 50-Tooth Spur Gear — The primary drive gear in this combo is a full 50 teeth, which when paired with the 20-tooth pinion creates a specific gear ratio that influences your RC car's acceleration characteristics and maximum velocity. This larger spur gear is ideal for conditions where you need more top speed rather than raw acceleration.
- 20-Tooth Pinion Gear — The smaller pinion gear meshes directly with the motor, and the 20-tooth configuration in this set works in conjunction with the 50-tooth spur to establish the overall transmission ratio. This smaller pinion is essential for transmitting motor power efficiently to the drive system.
- Machined from Solid Steel — Both gears in this set are precision-machined from solid steel rather than cast or moulded, ensuring consistent tooth profiles, superior strength, and longer service life compared to lower-quality alternatives. Machining provides far greater accuracy than other manufacturing methods, resulting in smoother operation and reduced wear.
- Hardened Steel Construction — The steel used in these gears has been hardened through specialised heat treatment, making the teeth exceptionally resistant to stripping, cracking, and deformation during extreme driving. This hardening process is essential for high-performance RC applications where power delivery is intense and continuous.
- Extra-Wide Steel Teeth — The tooth design on both the spur and pinion gears features an extra-wide profile, which dramatically increases the contact area between meshing teeth. This wider tooth design distributes load more evenly, reduces stress concentration, and provides ultimate power handling capacity even during aggressive acceleration or high-torque situations.
- 1.0 Metric Pitch Specification — The metric pitch determines the tooth size and spacing, ensuring precise compatibility with Traxxas transmissions engineered to this specification. This is a critical measurement that must match your vehicle's transmission to ensure proper meshing and performance.
- 5mm Shaft Compatibility — The gears are designed to fit Traxxas vehicles with 5mm drive shafts, making installation straightforward for models within this specification. Always verify your model's shaft diameter before ordering to ensure correct fitment.
- Includes Set Screw — The package includes a set screw for secure gear mounting, eliminating the need to source this critical fastening component separately. The set screw locks the gear firmly to the shaft, preventing unwanted rotation or slippage during driving.
- Genuine Traxxas Component — As an authorised Traxxas dealer part, this gear set is manufactured to the exact specifications Traxxas engineers designed for optimal performance in their vehicles. Using genuine Traxxas parts ensures compatibility, reliability, and warranty protection.
- Performance Tuning Tool — By changing gear ratios, you can fine-tune your RC car's performance characteristics to suit different running conditions. Lower ratios favour acceleration, whilst higher ratios favour top speed—this 50:20 combination (2.5:1 ratio) is geared for higher speeds.
Technical Performance
The Traxxas TRX6450 spur and pinion gear combo represents the pinnacle of transmission engineering for high-performance RC cars. Both gears are precision-machined from solid steel and hardened to resist the enormous stresses generated during acceleration, cornering, and sustained high-speed driving. The 50-tooth spur gear and 20-tooth pinion gear combination creates a 2.5:1 gear ratio, which is optimised for maximum top speed and suitable for track racing, high-speed bashing, and open-field driving where maintaining velocity is the priority. The 1.0 metric pitch specification ensures these gears mesh perfectly with Traxxas transmissions engineered to this standard, whilst the extra-wide tooth design distributes power across a larger contact surface, dramatically improving power handling capacity and durability. The hardened steel construction means these gears will withstand repeated high-torque impacts and continuous power delivery without tooth stripping, cracking, or deformation—critical performance requirements for competitive RC racing and aggressive driving. The 5mm shaft fitment ensures compatibility with a wide range of Traxxas models, including the flagship XRT Ultimate, XRT VXL-8S, and the Funco Motorsports Pro Scale 8S 2WD Electric Sand Car. Whether you're upgrading from stock gearing or replacing worn components, this genuine Traxxas part delivers the precision engineering and reliability that separates high-performance RC cars from standard bashers.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Which Traxxas RC models is the TRX6450 gear set compatible with? — This gear set is a replacement part and ultimate accessory part for the Traxxas XRT Ultimate and XRT VXL-8S models in all available colours (blue, orange, green, and black). It is also compatible with the Traxxas Funco Motorsports Pro Scale 8S 2WD Electric Sand Car in all colour options (orange, green, red, and blue). Always check your vehicle's manual to confirm the correct gearing for your specific model and driving conditions.
- What is the gear ratio created by the 50-tooth spur and 20-tooth pinion? — The 50:20 combination creates a 2.5:1 gear ratio. This means the motor turns 2.5 times for every full rotation of the spur gear, resulting in a setup optimised for higher top speeds rather than maximum acceleration. This ratio is ideal for open-track racing, high-speed bashing, and situations where maintaining velocity is more important than rapid acceleration off the line.
- How do I install the TRX6450 gear set on my Traxxas RC car? — Installation requires removing your existing gears from the transmission, then fitting the new 50-tooth spur gear and 20-tooth pinion gear in their place. The set screw provided must be tightened securely to lock the gear onto the 5mm shaft. For detailed installation instructions, always consult your Traxxas vehicle's owner's manual, as transmission access differs between models. If you're unfamiliar with transmission work, RC Model Shop's team of experienced technicians can provide guidance.
- Will changing to the 50:20 gear ratio affect my RC car's battery life? — Yes, gear ratio changes do influence battery consumption. A 2.5:1 ratio optimised for top speed may consume battery power differently than alternative gearing. A higher ratio (more pinion teeth relative to spur teeth) results in higher acceleration but lower top speed and potentially shorter runtime, whilst a lower ratio (as with the 50:20) favours speed over acceleration. Monitor your battery temperature and runtime during testing to understand how this gearing performs with your specific setup.
- Are these gears suitable for beginners upgrading their first Traxxas RC car? — This is a genuine Traxxas replacement part suitable for anyone maintaining or upgrading their transmission. However, gear ratio changes should be undertaken by someone with transmission knowledge or under expert guidance. If you're new to RC car tuning, our team at RC Model Shop can advise you on whether this particular gearing suits your driving style and running conditions.
- Why are these gears machined from solid steel rather than plastic or moulded? — Machined steel gears offer superior strength, precision, and longevity compared to plastic or cast alternatives. Steel can withstand the extreme torque, impact, and continuous stress generated by brushless motors in high-performance RC cars. Machining from solid steel ensures every tooth is precisely shaped with tight tolerances, resulting in smoother meshing, less backlash, and reduced wear. The hardening process adds an additional layer of protection against tooth stripping and deformation.
- Can I mix the TRX6450 gears with gears from other manufacturers? — No, Traxxas gears are engineered specifically for Traxxas transmissions and must be paired with matching components. Mixing gears from different manufacturers or using incorrect pitch specifications will result in poor meshing, excessive wear, noise, and potential transmission damage. Always use genuine Traxxas components together.
- What is the benefit of the extra-wide tooth design? — The extra-wide teeth dramatically increase the contact area between the spur and pinion gears. This larger contact surface distributes load more evenly across multiple teeth, reducing stress concentration on individual teeth and preventing premature wear or tooth stripping. Wide-face gears are essential for high-power applications where torque levels are extreme, making them ideal for brushless RC cars and competitive racing.
